Iv4

i am away from my lathe on business in High Point, NC. (furniture industry) and had an idea. how does IV4 hold up as a break tip? i saw a pic of a Varney with a black phenolic ferrule and a white tip...the idea just wandered into my head and i wont be back to my lathe untill the 29th to experiment...
thanks,
Jay

i think his tips are iv-4.you would have to ask him to be sure, but that is what i hear anyway.

interesting. I wouldnt think iv4 glued that well. Kinds like delrin. I mean threaded like a ferrule yes but glued like a tip. Never wouldve considered it

Not sure if he's pulling everyone's leg or not, but he's mentioned many times that the tip he uses is a proprietary material. I would have guessed that it's I4 but who knows? He has also said that he does some sort of threaded tenon on the backside of his tips so as not to relay solely on the adhesive.

I may have some of this wrong but I think I'm close.

Ivorine 4 I think.
yes thats it. i have some ordered thru atlas. never messed with the stuff yet. i have been told it doesnt glue well? would a 5 minute epoxy work for installing a threaded IV4 ferrule? and CA gell for a IV4 tip? i know tips will blow off when miscued pretty hard but i have been told (and have already used with phenolic) a way around that. thanks,
Jay

I remember reading a Varney post that mentions using a tenon on the back of the tip.
I use the tennon way when I tried to hide tip to make it look natural never came off.

Just curious - if you are using IV4 for the ferrule AND the tip, why not just round the ferrule instead of trying to glue it on? It sure can't fall off that way ;-)

yes that would be the case....but i saw a black phenolic ferrule with a white tip. high contrast, just a diferent look. of course, if it was all IV4 then there would be no need to use 2 pieces, just round off like you say
thanks again,
Jay

quick follow up...
i got back early. i have a few new excaliber sneakys to mess with. i put a one piece brown canvas phenolic on one....an IV4 ferrule with a G-10 tip on one....and the last one, i cut off the tip, glued a red fiber pad on the factory ferrule, then drilled a 3/16 hole a quarter inch deep thru the pad into the ferrule, installed a tip of IV4 with a non threaded tenon snug fitting into the hole and pressed it on with the tailstock using CA gel. it looks great, a white (guessing pvc) ferrule with a white tip and a red ring separating them, i havnt seen anything like it around here.

all 3 are the same cue specifications,
3-the canvas phenolic broke pretty well, as most phenolics do.
2-the IV4 ferrule + G-10 tip came in second id say. pretty powerful but i could not control it well (i think i was trying to hammer the rack too much)
1-and the IV4 tip on the factory ferrule broke the best. it was easy to control and it felt as if the ball left the cue more crisp so to say than the others

not sure if a one piece IV4 ferrule and tip would do any better. im sold on this stuff. g-10 isnt too shabby either, but im not too fond of damaging cue balls. just my 2 cents for the day, let me know what you guys think if you experiment with it.
thanks again,
Jay

BTW....all 3 of these are brand new cues, great for dedicated breakers. they are going back into the plastic sleeves they came in....if you want one, $50 shipped, pm me
BTW#2, the G-10 tip was put on the same way, with a tenon into the ferrule, should never come off

i tried a g10 tip before, they definitely damage the balls, i'd stay away from it. i wonder if iv4 damages balls

i have been using my IV4 set up since last wednesday, about 1-3 hours a day and so far so good. my cue ball is still good. yes g-10 can damage them, i dont use it personally but do offer it if a customer wants it.
