ivory ferulle question...

Hello Azers....

I got a question about ivory ferulles.....
I play with acss musashi shafts, which are customize by a friend of mine Penrose cues...
He installed ivory ferulles on it with a fibre path between ferulle and tip..
now I have replace my tip without fibre path, and It's looks it give me a better hit...but is it necessary to use the fibre path for cracking or damage the ferulle??

I can't comment on your specific shafts and treatments but I have ivory ferrules on dozens of my own shafts and not a single pad on any of them. In fact most are capless ferrules.

YMMV as usual.
 
I have 2 shafts with Ivory ferrules and "no" pads ..
One shaft is over 10 yeard old and no pad...
 
Like insurance

The pad is like an insurance policy, it may not be totally necessary but will protect your ivory ferrule better than to not have it! If you are breaking racks with an ivory ferrule I think it would be a very good idea to have a pad otherwise maybe not so necessary.

My Scruggs has ivory ferrules and I have never used any pads on them. But I've heard that ivory gets brittle when it's cold so I wouldn't want to play with a really worn tip with it, especially after arriving to the pool club straight out of a cold winter weather.

you'll be fine without the pad.....dont break with the cue to be on the safe side though:smile:
 
My Jim Ingram cue has 2 shafts with ivory ferulles with no pads. He did advise against breaking with them .

Don't let the tip get too low. The pad is good for protection when a player lets the tip get down to nothing.

Ivory ferrules are not the best thing anymore. I like Juma way better.

The pad is also there as an insurance to cue repair hacks.:eek:
In replacing tips, the pad can be left and re-faced instead of refacing the ivory.
Heaven forbid if someone used the rapid sander on that ivory.
Believe some would with 80 grit paper even. :eek:
