Ivory

you are supporting imense cruelty and the extinction of a wonderful species for a stinking pool cue. so yeah, i take it personally because i care about elephants and i care about the planet as a whole. your posts on this subject show that you care only about what makes you happy. this is exactly the attitude that threatens the entire planet. soon there will 7 billion greedly, slimy, human vermin like you running around, buring forests, murdering wildlife et and we will all pay the price. this is my planet too!

i don't say anything here that i wouldn't say to your face.

How many times have you witnessed an elephant getting murdered for a pool cue? I see a lot of anger in your posts, but no facts or first-hand knowledge of whats going on today. I respect your passion and commitment, but that does not give you or anyone else the right to go around calling people a POS. Im not picking a fight with you, but I dont believe that pool cues are the main, or even a significant, reason for poaching. I could be wrong, but unless you come up with some proof or hard evidence, you will get no support here.

I read here about cuttin off their tusks b4 they are dead. If none of them had tusks then their wouldnt be a need to poach. I like that idea, tranquilize em then saw off the tusks, they do it with cattle... then we could have the best of both worlds.

Another thing, do you think that these world famous cue makers, with reputations on the line, would use ivory unless they knew it was pre-ban? I certainly dont think theyd take the risk of using illegal ivory...but what do i kno..

What are the reasons for an ivory ferrule? Are they worth the money?

Also, what are the pads under the tip for? Advantages?

So Mr Hunter, did you get your initial questions answered to your satisfaction?
It's your cue and it's your Karma. Do what you feel is appropriate.
Don't worry, it's just a game.

How to identify ivory

Schreger lines

http://www.lab.fws.gov/ivory_natural.php#elephant

I got a sample of mammoth from a cue where the appropriate angle can be seen in the sample.

Side note: I wish no elephants will ever die again - but I am pretty sure they will. If I find a leprechaun, this will not be one of my wishes - unless the tricky devil tricks me.

Until this thread went crazy I was getting alot of my questions answered. There were some very good posts about the benefits and how fellow pool players enjoyed them. I like to experiment with different products, helps keep things fresh. I wanna try an ivory ferrule, now I just have to find a place to install one, any ideas? Btw, i dont consider using ivory as bad karma.

You have to kill an elephant to get it.

KJ ... you really think elephants live forever?

They do die of natural causes and old age.
Their tusks are harvested by those lucky enough to find their carcass before it rots.
I would never condone killing an elephant for its ivory tusks.
But finding a dead one in the wilderness and not saving the ivory would be a real waste.

As for ivory ferrules ... there is better material to use IMHO.
Deer antler is one if you must have animal parts on your cue.
I have seen that stuff colored brown to pure snow white.

A while back some African nation burned a mountain of poached ivory tusks taken from poachers over a period of time.
Now that was a real waste and a very stupid thing to do.
They could have sold that ivory flooding the ivory market and and then used that money to hire more armed conservation officers to protect the elephants and stop poaching.
What were they thinking!

You can have just about any cue maker on this forum install one for you.
Dont you have a cue repairman near you?
Next time you go to a big tournament have one installed there.
Or you can send your shaft to someone here and have it done.
If you need a recommendation call Arnot Cues ... and see what he would charge.

You might like them ... you might not.
Dont expect them to improve your stroke.

So ... MR. Sasuage have you read the information that Thomas Wayne offered about this very subject?

Personally I don’t have a problem with ivory. I think it is hypocritical to say one animal is ok to kill and one is not for whatever reasons some people have. Would it be wrong to kill the last of a species yes, unquestionably it would. However the flip side of that coin is that there is nothing wrong with managing the population. The simple fact is that they are a natural resource like cows, deer, pheasant, elk, moose, etc. These resources are not to be exhausted, but managed to ensure their around for the next generation.

But I think Denis Leary said it best when he said:

“I love the animals." Hey, I love the animals too. I love my doggy. He's so cute. My fluffy little dog.. He's so cute- There's the problem. We only want to save the cute animals, don't we? Yeah. Why don't we just have animal auditions. Line 'em up one by one and interview them individually. "What are you?" "I'm an otter." "And what do you do?" "I swim around on my back and do cute little human things with my hands." "You're free to go." "And what are you?" "I'm a cow." "Get in the f***ing truck, ok pal!" "But I'm an animal." "You're a baseball glove! Get on that truck!" "I'm an animal, I have rights!" "Yeah, here's yer f***ing cousin, get on the f***ing truck, pal!”

Just my 2 cents……..

it's clear that the ivory cue folks don't understand or don't want to understand or just don't care about the senseless cruelty involved in the ivory trade. they speak NOT to the near extinction of a wonderful species for the bragging rights of owning a cue with ivory. i stand by my POS comment.

Interesting moral stance - coming from someone named sausage.

Back to the topic, I've used cues of various ferrule materials and I like the hit and feel of ivory the best, by a wide margin.

As far as it being brittle or subject to cracking, I've had one cue for 45 years that has not had a problem.

Anyone who things ivory cracks easily has never seen the break cue Ernie Gutierrez used for years. Practically everything but the shaft wood was made of ivory and he used it as his break cue to make that exact point.

Call me crazy, but it seems like the true "vermin" is the one who makes comments with no proof or basis to back it up. Im not an expert, but the Thomas Wayne article seems legit.

If you have a personal issue with where the ivory comes from, don't buy it - Plenty of vegetarians have done the same thing. In the meantime, DoubleD, Any chance of getting a solid ivory shaft? It will go very well with the Condor that I grilled for dinner.

Walrus ,teeth tusks-old pink colored-with moori

I know a cue maker that uses walrus teeth- Ivory- it was the best solid hit, I moved the shaft around on some pretty fancy custom cues, and it just was fabulous. like zero deflection- I did break 1 ivory ferrule but I added some pressure over 10yrs.play and tip replacement and sanding! It broke going into a case and caught the jump cue edge!-put micarta on. I would read ,or ask Richard Black- He was so proud of his Ivory ferrules in the mid-90's. I want to say soap and water. It wasn't baby oil Teeth and Tusks- I did read Mr Dennis Deickmans Story- and its ugly -read it. I have a Halibut(Cirle) Hook made of old Ivory from a Hawaiian Artist- The key is it's razor sharp and a hook For Fishing-but sold as Jewelery

I like ivory myself.

Hit is subjective; but...

I like way ivory ferrules play. I have an ivory and non ivory ferruled shafts for an old Huebler, and the ivory one gets almost all the play time, and still stays cleaner.

I have seen Walurs Teeth in alot of the navtie stores in Alaska but i think they are the only ones allowed to harvest them. I know a frend of mine has been toying around with Walurs teeth on his cues. I never asked how it feels/hits and how he likes it but i will ask when i get back to Alaska.

If my Ivory ferruls were not so high in Quality as in you can see the wood looking grains very easly from a little bit aways and if i had an extra shaft with out at ivory ferrul i would try Walurs.

I was watching a show on the history channel about animal extictions. 98% of ALL ANIMALS THAT EVER WALKED the planet are EXTINCT. They said, it is ABNORMAL for a species to not go extinct.

Anyway, I have ivory ferrules on all my shafts, including custom installed on 5 or 6 predators. I wouldn't consider a playing cue without an ivory joint either. Its subjective, but I feel the hit is much softer. The extreme difference would be the "hard" hit of a southwest (even though many of them have shafts with ivory ferrules).

for the o/p, the only way to know is to hit with one. Better yet, have a local cuemaker install one on a shaft so u can do side by side comparison.

You want to talk about imense cruelty, goto a slaughter house were they process beef, pork and chicken. However, this practice is considered "Socialy Acceptable". Why, because we enjoy the by product: meats, leather shoes, belts, wallets, car seats, furniture and etc... Of course, these animals will never be extinct. Not because of human intervention but because it's a billion dollar industry.

IMHO, nothing plays better than a good ivory ferrulle and every cue that I buy for the rest of my life will have ivory ferrules.

Hell, Id shoot an elephant myself.

No issues for me.

Maybe one or two "holier than thou" posters....:p

Wow, all this talk about ivory has made me hungry for a whale burger!!
Regardless of how you feel about ivory or any other highly debatable topic, why can't people just stay on their sides of the line and keep to themselves. I'm not an elephant killer, and I have actually been shot at...........and shot back at poachers, so you could only imagine how I feel about poachers! My point is, if you're against ivory then make youre God given choice to avoid using it. But quit making everybody else out to be poachers, supporters of poachers, or some kind of low life killers. (POS-I can deal with:D)
Do your part to show your support for your position on ivory by YOU not purchasing or using anything with ivory, but stay off my toes 'cause it's none of your business!!

dave

I suppose if you murdered someone it won't be any of our business either.
If people have objections to the killing of elephants just so someone can have ivory parts in someones pool cue I think they have a right to try and convince those people not to support a trade that may cause the death of said animal if they so choose.

In short they can support their position in more ways than one and if it wasn't for people like them we probably won't have any elephants left on the planet by now.

oh well, you can return to your selfish, it's all about me, life now.
You'll probably be happy when all the Whales are gone also.
