In my opinion she was the best women player ever, now to compare her with the men, what man player would you think ,that Jean would play even with(9ball),now i know she couldnt hang with the top men players like,Svb,strickland, archer, morris and ect,but how about men players that are a notch below those guys, say maybe,Shuff,Bartram, wilke, iam thinking that she could of held her own against these players, but i like to see what all you guys think?

The question of women playing against the men comes up a lot, and I'm never really sure in the case of pool why they can't be equal? It really isn't a strength thing IMO?

anyway.....Allison, Jean, Jeanette, and MANY of the other women play in Mens events and do well, but never really take over.

IMO I think it is a mental thing......like a mental hurdle. Once over, players in that stratosphere should be able to play with anyone in the world.

G.

Jean was a great all around athlete besides being a great pool player. She could certainly handle herself against most men. It is a shame they stopped letting her play in men's events so she quit. On any given day....

Gambling and tournament play are two different animals. Jean beat some of the top men players of the time in their prime. IMO when Jean left the WPBA and started playing in open tournaments she already was very tired of the game and all the BS she had to go through because she was light years ahead of her closest women rivals. As far as the men...none of them wanted to draw her in a tournament. None of them. Johnnyt

From what I understand, in her prime, Jean could run with the best of the men. Some "open" tournaments were changed to "men only" tournaments because of Jean.

When Jean stopped competing, the pool world lost something special.

I never really could understand the different levels between women and men either. But the facts are...you never hear of women putting 6, 7, and 8 packs together, on a big table anyway. I have seen and heard of women, not even top level pros, putting those together on a bar box but not on a 9ft. It really isn't a strength thing at all its just a game. It's the same as saying women just aren't as good as men at lets say chess.

here is what i think
any women can play me or shuff for 20 k or more.
this is an offer to any women.

Look at some tourney results from back in her day....... She took the big names down..... No way can anyone say she couldn't beat the likes of earl and svb

Everytime this comes up a few always try to change it to gambling when tournaments are what we're talking about. Why? The reason is many women have beat top men in tournaments over the years, so they can't defend that part of their male ego. Johnnyt

the guy asked what men players do you think she would play even with.
and he said my name .
i think i can beat any women for money. anyone can win a tourney match.
dont be so mad johnny cause the women dont play as good as the men.
i have said it before i think the women play good.
but i dont think they play my speed or suffs or oscors speed.

All of this was sort of proven in the IPT.... ie, women, snooker players.

The snooker players who hadn't been playing much pool did not do well, even the great Ronnie O'Sullivan.

Only one or two women ever got past the first round in any of the tournaments.

Gambling, no top woman can beat any of the top 500 men in any kind of session... I don't mean race to 3 or some crap.. Minor exceptions here and there, like Jasmin playing a male pro who really plays no straight pool.. She would know more and may do well, but overall, I will take the male.

Yes, the women play solid and can beat 99% of the people on this forum, but their games don't compare to the men.

IMO it simply a numbers game. There's 1000 times more men that play @ cue sports than women. If as many women became interested in the game as the men there's no telling what would happen. My guess would be there'd be no difference and the current women champions would be better than they are now simply because the competition would raise their game. Its tough to get better without stiff competition.

When pool halls start attracting women things are bound to change. Men in the pool halls around the world are like fish in water, women are not. The climate in halls around the world are mos def changing and this will make a diffirence. Alot of people are dedicated trying to make pool a respected sport. We're light years away from snooker but wouldn't it be great if pool got more women in top finishes in big tournaments before snooker does? That would be a nice equalizer in the fancy snooker vs not quite so fancy pool. I really prefer the sausage party with a couple of female players when I play. There's alot of differences between men and women and probably for the best, everyone brings a surtain attitude to the table and it is all good. This issue is of big interest for everone, and respect is the keyword. I don't think "free pool on mondays for the ladys" is the answer, it goes so much deeper but it's a start! Go girl pool players!

I was at the BC Open in '85 or '86 I think it was, when Jean beat Keith McCready. I believe at that time she had also beaten Mizerak and a good many others.
And Richie, it's Balukas,

I see no where in the OP where gambling is stated. I see 9-ball even. That could be a race to 9 in tournament play and many women have beat top men in that. As far as gambling, I have to agree with you. The top women can't beat the top men right now. But, but, it will only take one woman to do it and more will follow quickly. The women's game is still getting better every year while the men's game seems to have peaked. Johnnyt

Hey TAR. Here is a nice Match. Chris and any women for 20K. They aint winning that on the WPBA.

The last time I watched Jean play was 1987 in the Governors Cup here in Columbus Ohio. It was not the top men who did not want her to compete, it was shortstops, most of who could not beat her.
In a tournament setting she had a chance at anyone, and I am sure she would have beaten a lot of the men gambling. As another poster said though, the top men would have more often than not beaten her.
Mostly because as someone else said they string more racks together.
I don't think more than a handful would have tried to give her the 7.
To put that in perspective , there were quite a few men on the pro tour at that time that could get the 7 from these guys any time they wanted.
Just my opinion but Jean in her prime and Allison in hers would have been pretty even.
One poster either has Jeans game a few notches too high or Bartrums a few too low.
She would have a chance in a tournament like everyone else who can run a couple of racks, get a roll or 2 and play at their best, hopefully while Chris is tired from gambling all night.

What would they be playing?, someone like Jasmin might be able to beat Chris or Shuff in 14.1 and is possibly the favorite but in 9 ball she probably needs the 7 out, 8 out in 10 ball. Not sure what you guys think about that, is the 7 out about right?

You have got to be kidding.......

There is no way that a Top Women Pro can beat Bartram over the long haul.
Let' see a women play a 100 game set agaist Bartram, they may have the will, but not the heart!!!!!!

Sure anyone can win a short set even me.

Chris Evert at her best couldn't beat her 16 year old brother.
This is well documented.

You can make excuses why Women haven't been able to win the Derby, US Open, etc.
Simple fact is they haven't.
Men cannot enter womens tournaments for that reason.
Any women however is allowed to enter a mans tournament, a simple fact.

I am sure that one day, there will be a Great Women Champion!!!!
Not today, however, Barney

Jasmin don't gamble and is not the best female player in the world in rotation games. Johnnyt
