Thievery in Las Vegas…

Joe Blackburn is a very well respected cue repair vendor at the APA events, the BCA 8-ball Nationals, the US Open for over 25 years, and many other events. Joe has been doing cue repair for at least 25 years at shows all over America, and for many years made his home in Nashville, TN, where he had a pro shop at JOB Billiards. My hat is off to Joe Blackburn for having the tenacity and fortitude to keep up the pace he has maintained. Joe is well respected within this industry, and has many thousands of loyal and happy customers. As a mobile cue repairman myself for the last 15 years, I understand how hard it is to continue traveling to these tournaments. He is an excellent repairman, and has worked hard to establish the great reputation he has established.

Now let me tell you a horrible story…
Thieves have stolen at least $80,000 worth of machinery and product from Joe Blackburn in Las Vegas. His trailer was stolen out of the parking lot at the Riviera with all his equipment, stock, and merchandise. I could not even begin to know what he is going through right now. He still has to work the BCA 8-ball Nationals starting Thursday, and over the last week has had to try and rebuild his whole setup. Let me tell you, it is hard enough to be fully prepared for an event like that knowing a year in advance, much less trying to do it all in a week. He will probably have to spend $10,000 just to be able to work the event…and that will not even come close to replacing the stuff that was stolen. There is no way the event will be as profitable as usual, not to mention the money he is out for all the stolen stuff. He will most likely not be able to do all the services he usually can, such as making shafts, joint work, butt plates, and more complicated stuff. On a more personal level, if this had happened to me, I don’t know if I could handle it as well as Joe has handled it.

Now I am asking everyone to try and help Joe get his stuff back. Let’s show some support for a guy that has serviced tens of thousands of players, from beginners all the way up to every professional player on the face of the earth.

Below is a list of some of the stolen items;
· Enclosed utility trailer w/Tenessee tags…black
· Cueman deluxe cuesmith lathe…$2600-
· Emco Compact-5 mini metal lathe mounted on toolbox…$1800-
· Central machinery wood lathe mounted on red toolbox with 2 drawers…$300-
· 1976 Szamboti…1 of a kind…rare 3/8-10 joint screw…ivory joint and butt plate, birds eye maple w/barbell inlays…brown Ostrich skin wrap with no shafts…$20,000-
· Phillippi…ivory joint and butt plate with gold inlays…matching joint protectors and 2 shafts with a black boars skin leather wrap…$9000-
· Josswest…sideways JW logo from 1968-1972,,,steel joint, plain jane birdseye…1 shaft…$1500-
· McDermott C-21…2 shafts…cue is in brand new condition…$1600-
· Paradise…$1000-
· Paradise…$1000-
· Andy Gilbert…titleist points…ivory joint, rings and buttplate…turquoise dots in ringwork…$3000-
· Mali…Busch Pool League cue…20 years old…$1000-
· Palmer…titleist forearm…$1000-
· Brunswick Corvette cue…$265
· DeAngelo leather wrap jig…$400-
· 6 predator blanks…$700-
· 260 moori’s…$2600-
· various boxes of tips; Le pro, triangle, elk master…500-
· 30 tiger tips…$240--
· 30 talisman tips…$210-
· 50 ivory ferrules…$750-
· 75 melamine ferrules…$225-
· 10 ivory collars…$350-
· 150 leather wraps…$2000-
· Porper Irish linen press…$150-
· Prather irish linen press…$100-
· Taps for all cues…$1500-
· Accessories, cue parts, and lots more tooling …$ thousands upon thousands
· lots of other stuff…$ thousands upon thousands

The total for all of the above is $56,790, not counting the trailer. I’ll bet there was $20,000 worth of tooling and cue parts not listed or more. There is much stuff that is not listed here as well, but this is all we could think of on the phone. I can tell you that there is probably never going be a completely accurate way to figure out what is missing, until Joe needs it and it won’t be there.
Folks, please keep your eyes and ears open and help us catch the scumbags that did this lowdown act…and don’t forget to do business with Joe the next time you see him.
Anyone that with any information about any of this stuff and wants to contact Joe Blackburn the number is (615) 498-4437, or you can call me @ (706)778-9611.
Hats off to Joe Blackburn…and good luck in the coming days!

i heard tony ruberto was in vegas....j/k i hope they catch these scumbags

Sad news indeed, Ted. I'm sure you remember well when it happened to our now-deceased friend Ray Schuler. Why do such bad things happen to such good people?

This is truly horrible! Although I'm not in Vegas, I will keep my eyes peeled and let people in this area know to be on the lookout for that stuff (people who probably get around more than I do)........his trailer likely isn't in Vegas anymore anyway. Folks, Joe is a great guy and an excellent cue repairman!! When I lived in the South, he was the one I turned to for all my cue work. Let's see if we can help him get his stuff back!!!

That is horrible news. I wonder if the thieves even knew what they were after? Hopefully there will be some leads that will turn up the merchandise. Joe is a great guy and if memory serves me correctly, this should be his one year wedding anniversary.

Ted,

That's super of you to help him out. I imagine they will find the trailer abandoned pretty soon with most of the stuff missing.

Hopefully he has photo's of the cues.

When he get's back home, if you or he can e-mail me photos of the cues, I'll keep an eye out on E-bay for them. I have some collector friends I can send them too as well. When the cues start changing hands, we should find out.

How sad, what pieces of @&^#

Did he have insurance?

If its not returned, which i hope it is... I hope they at least get enough meth out of it to rott there teeth out and die.

Sorry to hear about Joe's misfortune! He and I have been friends for 25 years. I'll certainly be on the lookout for anyone trying to unload any cuemaking equipment.

Ted, you got a wrong number for Joe. Please get it straight so i can call him, or someone have him call me. I will loan Joe any amount of equipment he needs. I got Joe started many moons ago in his repair business.

He's a good guy. A little twisted but good guy.
My heart goes out to you Joe.

If anyone knows the correct number, please let me know. 830-232-5991
thanks

That really bites Ted, My hearts out to him, and I am Very sorry to hear It. They might as well stole the mans whole life for what they took from him there. I am sure some of It was virtually unreplaceable.

I know what It's like to work your as- off only to put everything back into equipment & material trying to build things up alittle at a time, and the amount of waste and effort that goes with the territory to begin with. You really do have to have a love for what you do to even stick with It. He must be devastated by It. I'm sure even money could not replace everything. The down time would be bad enough if a piece of equipment went down, can't imagine how much backflow he will have from this. Imagine everything just gone one day, the work would pile up so high that It would take a while until you got caught up. I am smalltime, happy that way, and It would have a major effect on me, even if I had the money to replace everything, work would pile up quick, can't imagine what he's going through with all the work he has on his shoulders with all that he has going on.

Anyway, I am still always looking for deals on cue repair and building equipment and materials to fit My limited budget, so will keep My eye out as well for you guys. If I see anything that matches up, I will pass It On. Hope they get they guys that did it and recover what ever possible.

Joe did a repair for me once at JOB. He's a true gentleman. Us Tennesseans will keep our eyes and ears open.

That is totally messed up!!!! I think on these cases we need to do what the middle east does with thieves!!! Once found we should CHOP off thier hands and make it extremely painful!!! I hope he gets most or all of his things back!!!

Leonard,
I have edited the number in the original post to the correct number.

I cannot imagine how many pawn shops there are in Vegas, but that's the FIRST place I'd be checking.

My opinion, I'll bet the thieves had no idea what they were stealing. When they try to unload the merchandise is when they may stumble.

It's a pretty small culture, this pool world, and thanks to this forum, there will be many eyes and ears open.

I wish Joe the best of luck in recovering his loss. The equipment itself will be hard to sell for the robbers. It's just a matter of time (IMO), and I'm betting they get caught!

That is quite a sad situation. I will keep my feelers out as well and notify someone if I hear or see anything. Joe has done work for me as well and does a fantastic job!
