No, the comparison doesn't work at all unless Johann will be living here in the midst of his new Mosconi wannabes. It those are his plans, I'm sure we'll find out about it soon enough, but given that he runs his academy in Europe, and will surely be giving a lot of his time to his real students, it seems unlikely.
Karolyi, by moving to the US, became an insider in American gymnastics. He didn't continue training overseas-based European gymnasts. I doubt he'd have succeeded as an outsider. If he hadn't moved here, he'd have ended up moving to and coaching some other nation.
If anybody anywhere knows of an absentee coach that brought a team to new heights in any sport, please chime in.
People wanted Archer or Varner as captain and they don't even play or attend tournaments anymore. I didn't see you or many others post they were offended about that. I still think Mark Wilson was a fine pick but he doesn't play or attend tournaments anymore either besides the DCC and US Open. And like I said Johann won with the Golden Boy of the Euro team and he lives in the US. Last year it was Golden Boy and Shaw living here. Did Chamat travel here to hang out with them and potential other foreign players that live in the USA? No -- they communicated by texts and their secret Facebook group just like the US team. Then they met up a week (or less) prior to the event.
