Johan ruijsink usa captain 2017

Sorry if already mentioned, but this pick reminds me of how this man changed the face of US Gymnastic

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Béla_Károlyi

Wish Johan and Team USA much success

Yes, Karolyi became a permanent resident of the United States about 35 years ago and built and ran a training academy in Houston, Texas for would-be Olympic gymnasts. So, why exactly does this come to mind when you think of Johann's appointment? Is he planning on the same basic path?

If Johann will focus on training American players right here, face to face, in the US to the same extent that a US based coach would have, I'm prepared to retract what I've written. I'm think it highly unlikely and almost inconceivable, but if he's going to embrace the job to the extent that Jay Helfert offered to, he'll meet with nothing but enthusiasm from me and other US fans.

Why all the face to face needed -- it's not like Mark Wilson (or previous US coaches was given the same). They each got the players for one week.

Hell - the Golden Boy of the Mosconi Cup - Darren Appleton - has lived in the US for how many years? Wasn't like Johann had constant face to face contact with him.

Johann's methods are constant contact through communication, not face to face cause in today's world it simply isn't possible.

Your concern of the long distance coach is extremely valid. What needs to be done cannot be achieved through Skype and email.

Maybe the answer will be in how has Johan been training the Russian players?
Has he been living in Russia for extended periods of time to train them?
I do not know the answer, however, I'm sure Johan will either be over here training or getting the players to his school in Europe for periods of time dedicated to his training methods.

Another aspect is the general public learning just what tactics Johan will incorporate (via forums, magazine articles, etc) - This could lead to so much more in-depth discussion on the value of coaching at the professional level that will resonate into the amateur levels, thus advancing the sport here in America for the next generation.

I still believe Jay Helfert would've been effective and I wish Jay had a school of some sort that would've sold the deal. Mark Wilson had the Lindenwood program, Johan has his Netherlands program, and that's what matchroom is apparently interested in when evaluating coaches for team USA.

Thanks Cardigan. I do have a pool school and it goes everywhere with me. About a 100 years of pool knowledge all packed in my head. I've listened and learned from all the greats from Mosconi, Caras and Crane on down. If I tried to list all the names of great pool players that I befriended and learned from it would take several pages on here. Let's just say I am a student of the game.

I have shared what I've learned with many good players down through the years and I'd like to think that it benefited them. I don't profess to be a great player but a few players I have shown new shots and outlined strategy with include a certain Efren Reyes, Buddy Hall, Dennis Orcullo and Shane Van Boening. I could go on and name more names but I think you get the picture. Thanks again for mentioning me.

I'm sure part of him moving over here was the ability to become the US coach. I was the first one to bring up this example.

Or how about a graduate of Kent State, coaching SEC LSU to a National Championship in football and then going to THE SEC school in a state where people live, breathe and eat college football and winning 4 more National Titles there. That state didn't say they wanted the best coach to lead there team just cause he won and was associated with a rival.

Johann is a great choice. I could only think of 2 or 3 Americans that fit, the dozen or so other names that were being thrown around would have been horrendous.

The parallels are not identical but quite apparent. But if you need to point out why this reminds me, sure--- perceived 'outsider' coach taking over a flailing American team. The results are yet to be seen, but I remain hopeful.

Why do you take so long before chiming in on popular topics. Your insight is such that it shuts down a thread that is halfway dying because the tailenders are no match for you.

So come on Watchez shape up {EARLIER)

I am not a snooker player but I'm a big fan of this YouTube channel " the snooker gym"...

Where the instructor Nic Barrow brings in students and streams his lessons or highlights of them for all to see....

Jay, if I had the means I would set up a brick and mortar academy like this for you and pro students to capture all that knowledge for generations to enjoy in the future.

I really do wish I had the time to do this.
Thanks again for all that you do for the sport.

I don't come on here as much as the past but knew this topic would be here.

Honestly - I think Matchroom is pure genius on one hand and pure stupidity on the other. They have taken what was once an event in the US but not the main topic of discussion and turned it into a soap opera that no one can turn off. US players make it their yearly focus when in reality, with the current failure of the setup of the points race, it makes it ridiculous for most to do so. Luke Riches told me it wasn't his job to save American pool but they could do so without Johann and with $0 invested. Sad they don't see it.

No, the comparison doesn't work at all unless Johann will be living here in the midst of his new Mosconi wannabes. It those are his plans, I'm sure we'll find out about it soon enough, but given that he runs his academy in Europe, and will surely be giving a lot of his time to his real students, it seems unlikely.

Karolyi, by moving to the US, became an insider in American gymnastics. He didn't continue training overseas-based European gymnasts. I doubt he'd have succeeded as an outsider. If he hadn't moved here, he'd have ended up moving to and coaching some other nation.

If anybody anywhere knows of an absentee coach that brought a team to new heights in any sport, please chime in.

I wont be watching this December. Im sorry but it has nothing to do coaching wise. Its all political and it stinks to high heaven. Sorry lads... I love my team but i don't agree not letting an America coach leading our boys. Its insulting to say the least!!!

So, you're correcting me on why something reminds me of something else? If your intention is to invalidate my comment and discourage any future participation, I'll concede that. Have a nice day.

If we're going to start allowing people who don't otherwise qualify to be a member of the team (namely non citizens) to become the team "captain", can we at least change the title from "non-playing captain" to "Coach" or "manager"?

In most other sports/competitions, the "team Captain" (playing or otherwise) is typically a member of the team and meets all other eligibility requirement of that team. The obvious examples that come to mind include, Davis Cup, Ryder Cup, Football (American & ROW)....and the Mosconi Cup...at least until 2017.

Otherwise, let's just open the floodgates and allow team America (and Europe) to recruit and build their teams from the entire global talent base.

I've always thought it was weird that the title was captain. To me a captain is a playing team member, like a quarterback. The coach is the non-playing manager of the team. I guess in the past the Mosconi Cup team captains were on the team, and there was no non-playing team manger?

Non playing captains were introduced to the Mosconi Cup in 2003 - Oliver Ortmann & Nick Varner. The captains went back to playing during 2004 & 2005 campaigns, and then permanently assumed non-playing roles in 2006 and thereafter. Prior to 2003, I don't see any mention of a formal Mosconi Cup Captain.

It seems that the history of the Mosconi Cup captain is quite similar to that of the Ryder Cup captain except for one obvious detail. The European & American Ryder Cup captains have always been European and American, respectively.

From: Wikipedia article on the Ryder Cup

The captains have always selected the players and chosen the playing order in each group of matches. When the contest involved 36-hole matches, it was usual for the captain to be one of the players. The USA only had two non-playing captains in this period: Walter Hagen in 1937 and Ben Hogan in 1949 while Great Britain had non-playing captains in 1933, 1949, 1951 and 1953.

With the change to 18-hole matches and the extension to three days, it became more difficult to combine the roles of captain and player and Arnold Palmer in 1963 was the last playing captain. The captains have always been professional golfers and the only captain who never played in the Ryder Cup was J.H. Taylor, the 1933 British captain.

Quit crying and join the real world. Where someone was born makes no difference to anything. Although i stayed silent, i was flabbergasted at some of the sales pitches that were being made on here.

Johan's pedigree is behind doubt. Now the only question is, will he do the right thing and ditch SVB?

^This!

This is the wisest decision you've ever made. It's not in his powers to eliminate the technical gap between the sides but he will definitely do a great amount of better to take a great lot more of the US Team's potential out and bring it to the match table. Last but not least, do not underestimate the extra added pressure this move puts to the European side. It won't be easy to face an almost father figure like him for our old guard boys, make no mistake about that. This is something Chamat has to give a lot of thought. Barry Hearn is a fox, light years ahead of anyone else in the business. Next Mosconi Cup looks promising to say the least. The SVB issue will be discussed and sorted out pretty soon too.

You would think when 9/1 hate having a non-America Captain, he would say no to the job. I hope someone will put on a 16 top player tournament same dates as the MC. Johnnyt

I apologize. My wording was poorly considered.

And what am I? Chopped liver?

Ah, yes, I guess it's still a man's world, but remember that it would be nothing -- NOTHING -- without a woman or a girl. ;)
