John Barton Playing ATM Right Now

I have played ATM a few times and never seen his cold side. He has a has very high gear when the mixture is right. Seems like a interesting dude and has remembered my name even though we only meet once every five years or so.

ATM runs hot and cold. On a 9 foot table he might run two or three racks, then make a couple of stupid mistakes in a row.

Thx for the info. I know i am stepping into dangerous territory......but I asked because his Fargo rate of 670 doesnt meet up with my perception of 670 player - a perception I got from playing similarly ranked european players (euros 670s seem to play a lot stronger). Andys robustness is 1500+ so his ranking is well established. I am rather confused....:confused::confused:

He's mostly an action player so I'm sure his rating might be a bit off. He's got a very high gear but I'd guess he's a low 700 player most of the time.

I like Andy too, he is a good guy. Yes, he's got a reputation and all that but everyone knows that going in, at least around here.

Funny story (to me anyway), I bet on John Collins (John Barton's previous name) when he played ATM years ago at the old Rails and Ale's here in the Denver area. It was a race to seven 9ball on a valley bar box and *I think* John was getting the seven and the breaks! Now that I think about it, it could have been the seven out, but it was a big spot either way. I thought for sure he couldn't lose that game. I lost $100.

Many moons ago I went up to Felt and removed some pesos from his account. He plays good, makes bad games, I got paid. I left thinking he's a weirdo though, 6 years later I still think he's a weirdo. That's all I have to say on the matter, pay at the window.

You didnt get my point Alex,i would actually rate him lower than 670..maybe it was the barbox with big pockets that made him play sloppy fundamentals-wise,but that is the first thing we Europeans look at - fundamentals and his were definitely sloppy. Surely he doesnt need really quality fundamentals on bar box as small table is great equalizer when it comes to quality technique but at 9ft table he is 100% prone to mistakes because of it. Also his defence would definitely use some improvement. Maybe when he doesnt feel much pressure he can be amazing player but once that pressure comes his fundamentals will make him suffer more often than not..

i think weirdo is close.
I heard a very good Colorado player call him a retard once.
Yes hes off a bit but really nice and funny.
The only thing that bothers me about him is that hes very loud.Real loud.
Maybe hes a bit deaf, dont know.

Ohhhh his high gear is 700 plus. But his table manners, game selection, mental game, and emotional game are below 600. He's one of those guys that will crush a world class player in the first round, and then take a shit against a local better player in the next round. He's been primarily a big table player until maybe the past two years, but now I've seen his box game improve significantly. He's had a really strong past year or so in Wyoming and other regional events on the box, which would explain his Fargo rating. I've been fortunate enough to beat him twice in tournament play, but over all I would say he's beaten me three times more that that. He has twice my talent and ability, but I don't fear him as much as other lower rated players in tournament play, but I wouldn't want any of him for the money simply because you never know what you're gonna get with him.

Yes, he likes to yell across the room when he's woofing at someone standing next to him. He may be deaf in more ways than one.

You're right, I didn't read your full post before I responded. Mostly because I was just going to tell the quick story about their earlier match-up.

I generally agree with your assessment other than the overall skill level. I've seen him play 100's of times. He really plays well and when he is playing good, he really can play with pros and win. Maybe what you're describing is why he doesn't play as consistently as some of the better players nationally. I don't know.

there was a world class player from N.J. that could beat anyone he played if he showed up with his top gear.
sadly you never knew which one would show up,the world beater or the cushion beater.
mental toughness i guess.

He does not have twice your ability, dont sell yourself short.

Andrew is Jins favorite local player by far. When Jin started, Andrew walked into Felt for a Sunday tournament and his human side came out. he spent the next couple hours between matches just talking with Jin.

I believe he is the only player that Jin runs up to when Jin enters the pool hall. Andrew may not even realize just how happy Jin gets when he sees Andrew haha.

Ok...so I guess Andrew is Dr.Jekyll/Mr.Hyde type of player where the difference between his A-game and C-game is really big and that match was his Mr.Hyde incarnation :grin: Thx for your input guys, I was really confused about his Fargorate

I missed the match with John but he does have a pretty wide spread in performance day to day. A bit off topic but I noticed that SVB has about a 40 point difference in fargorate from his highs to his lows if you follow his average rating (from Mike Page's recent post). I would Guess ATM varies much more than that. I know I vary much more than that too, maybe a 100 point swings for me. I need to clean that up.
