John Schmidt: Modern Day Straight Pool Master

I read the article. To go from running 30's and 40's to all the sudden one hundred is astounding. I think I understand how John did this because when I was breaking my high run last friday, I felt like I could have just kept going till morning and never miss a shot or position or break out. To do it again a week later is even more astounding, incredible is more like it. If John can do it, then so can i, even if it is on a diamond! I am getting more and more determined these days.

Great article Samm!
I read your article and immediately went over and sent Dennis a message about that DVD he and others have been talking about.

I have seen John play in person, I sat next to him at the IPT event after he played and beat Oliver Ortmann, I even managed to get his autograph afterward when the event was over.
He is one heck of a nice guy and everything you and he said in that interview is 100% true. John is not only a great pool player and humble about his talent he is also an excellent representative of the sport of pool in general.
I have been trying to improve my game of 14.1 and your interview added to my personal experience has convinced me that John is the guy I need to learn from.
Thanks for that post, and John, you keep up the good work. We all will benefit from your success. I hope someone sponsors you to make the tour in an effort to break Mosconi's record. I would definitely pay to see you do that.

I agree John is a true master, if John ever realizes how much knowledge he really has..... No wait skip that, the world isn't ready for that yet !!!!!

Kudos to you Sammi for a great article and a great interview !

Great article Samm.

One of the reasons John was able to provide such telling answers is because you asked some very knowledgeable questions. That was seriously one of the best 14.1 interviews I've ever read. You asked all the right questions; questions that I as a fan would want answered. I know you're a great journalist but I was really impressed with how deeply you delved into 14.1.

Thanks for sharing.

Very nice article for both of you and for our sport.

I think I heard that Samm plays in a straight pool league.

High run 47 !

What can be said about John that hasn't been said before.

Great player. Great guy . Great teacher.

But I might be prejudiced because I have met him.

strange ?

My name is James Spinella/aka jim jones and I have been around straight pool here in NY since I started playing, around may be 12 years give or take,I always liked the game of 14.1 . I also have played with a natural shaft, always ran low 20's I thought I just didn't have the concentration. for the game.So two years ago my wife buys me a samsara bar cue and a ob-1 shaft because well you figure it out 400 right.never ran over 30 but my average went up.OK im happy but I still want to get to that 100 ball run right.I finally decide i'm gonna try a 314 never shot with one. I screw it on bang some balls around it feels good. so I go for it. 72...................... and I'm on my way to 100 soon I can feel it.you guys decide.
thanks for listening, jim jones

Great interview of a great guy. I say he's a great guy because the second time he met me he remembered me from the first time he met me, and that's always impressed me because I'm so forgettable. Even my wife had trouble for the first few years....

I was kinda wondering about how your post fit in.

Very nice run you had though. Keep it up and let us know how it goes.

in your own threads, that is.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone! It was a true pleasure. John is one of my favorite players for so many reasons: skill/ability, knowledge/experience, integrity, humility, and personality. He's exactly the kind of player that any company would be proud to sponsor. He's a wonderful ambassador for our sport!

As soon as I hung up the phone from our interview, I couldn't wait to go hit balls. It made me love the game even more!

Steve - I especially thank you for your response! I have a TON of respect for you as well and really appreciate all the support.

p.s. my h.r. = 47. i'm breaking 50 this year!

I liked the article a lot. John's really well spoken, and when someone else is typing for him it reads like a great article in a pool mag. He's got lots of good insight into the mindset of someone who plays like a champion. It's interesting that he's aware of the gap between his practice credentials and his tournament credentials. I'd love to see him go out and win some matches, maybe hit someone with a 200-and-out outside of his garage. That came off sounding a bit like a knock but I don't mean it that way, I want to see the guy succeed and take down some tournaments. Maybe get in some TAR straight pool matches, even if they're just part of an all around.

hi

good job sammy,
if i play pool as good as you interview i will be just fine.

also thanks everybody for the kind words.

the fact that many of you say i play good pool means something for sure, but when you say im a stand up guy then i feel like im on the right track in life.

i will have my detractors always but when someone says they met me and i treated them like i would want to be treated thats nice to hear.

it has recently been put into evidence that schmidt carries a cue destroying laser in his sharking arsenal and routinely pelts his opponents with chalk. :duck: i refuse to sanction such behavior with effusive accolades.
