The scores were very easy to read. The numbering was quite large and clear.
I saw the match, and it really just looked like John got extremely mad at himself and pushed the balls (with his cue) out of anger toward himself and frustration. I don't think he consciously thought, "I'm going to concede this match." After he missed his shot and broke out the balls, he hit the balls immediately after. They were still in motion. He wasn't pouting or cursing. I just don't think he was thinking clearly, with the match so tight and tensions so high.
When Ortmann missed an easy shot against Jasmin, he threw his cue on the adjacent table out of disgust. John's raking of the balls looked very much like the same thing, except that he did it on the table at play.
John's reaction seemed very much just that -- a reaction. It looked just like a burst of emotion in a pressure-cooked match. It didn't look like he was throwing a hissy fit, and he certainly wasn't trying to disrespect his opponent. I think for anyone to over analyze this, and to assume that Schmidt is a poor sport clearly is reading it wrong. Perhaps those who judge should reserve any public statements until they know at least a few sides of the story. I'd be willing to bet that smashmouth wasn't even there to witness it.

rackmsuckr said:My impression was that the scores were hard to read and John probably thought his opponent only needed 4 with a wide open table, when in reality it was 18 which would have required another break.
Anyway, Johnny, we still love ya!!!![]()
