Right on, John is a quality guy, not just America's best 14.1 player.
I have to give John credit. I have been around him since he was young. I have talked bad about John many times, he wasn`t the nicest person for a long time.
However, John seems to have changed some things in his life and is looking at thing differently. Recently he sent me a pm telling me he didn`t remember me but was sorry if he ever did anything to upset me.
When a man steps up and takes the step to do something like that all I can do is respect it and accept it.
John, I hope your new outlook on things continues and you continue to represent yourself and this sport well.

The only time I've seen John in person was about 15 or so years ago when he played in a tournament in Springfield Oregon I also played in. In the first round he missed a couple of balls and threw the games in prematurely and unnecessarily in a tantrum which led to him losing the match to a local kid. After the match was over he did not shake the kid's hand and proclaimed loudly to his road buddies "I just lost to a super nobody".
My thinking at the time was that our local guy just defeated a "super arrogant asshole" who was lucky he didn't also get his ribs stomped in by a lynch mob of super nobodies.
Well that was a long time ago. I guess people can change.

Perhaps he has changed. He was only about 25 then. People grow up. I know I still had a lot of growing up to do at 25.
I've always been in awe of John's game, but the only time I've seen him in person was at this year's SBE. He was practicing his one-hole break and running some balls at the Fury booth, and he stopped to answer several questions I had about LD cues. His explanations were clear, patient, and not the least bit condescending to this nobody.
To be honest, he was involved in a few threads here that lowered my opinion of him, but I have to say he is the most approachable pro I've met so far. He had a very relaxed and friendly manner about him that made me feel like I already knew him from before, but that wasn't the case. He's a very nice guy IMO, and I wouldn't mind taking some lessons with him if the opportunity ever arose.

It's funny how watching someone play and hearing how they speak can change perceptions. I'd not seen him play or speak until recently, and found him to be not only a good communicator but an interesting player to watch as well. Based only on *that* photo on his avatar, his tantrums on here, and the one shot I'd seen of his rather camp cue action on youtube, I'd previously had him down as a bit of a fruity drama queen/prima donna type.
Couldn't have been more wrong. He's a man's man, a savvy straight-talker and a fluent, aggressive player. Yabbers on a bit too much for my liking but you can't have everything.
And it's a good call he's on the MC team - he will handle the crowd as well as anyone, and that will be important this time around. Players with no fear in their eyes are more useful than those with fire in their bellies.
