Johnny Archer & Mosconi Cup

How can you bet on a team if you don't know who the players are?

If you bet on a team without knowing who the players are on the team, that sounds like a sucker's bet. :grin-square:

This guy wants you to take USA for the win with odds. How about 2.5 to 1? Whatcha gonna say Louie? I want some of that Barton money.

I am no math whiz but even I know that those are completely absurd odds.

Besides, Barton money is special. I used some of it for wallpaper so every time I walk into that room I smile and chuckle a little bit :-)

I think knowing who isn't going is what matters. Unless Mark is cloning SVB in his lab, we are FUBAR.

I would never spend a dollar of it either! Make a collage above the bed on the ceiling. Hope you guys have a rematch. Like Rocky movies sometimes later ones have more appeal.

Well neither does the other guy so a 'coin flip' seems a better designation.

I heard it through the grapevine that there *may* -- [emphasis on "may"] -- be a couple new faces on Team Europe this year, which will be quite interesting. :)

ETA: Those who bet long may bet wrong if they don't wait until they find out who's in and who's not.

heard the same from a pretty good source.

Why? Are they allowing some Americans to play on Team Europe? :grin-square:

Succeses? Shuff won a nobody bar box tournament with the who's who of regional American irrelevance.sossei got to a final and lost to our second best .and the only other threat in that tournament is someone who will never make the other team.bergman has been on a rip lately along with sky and its a shame that he isnt in the mix.Corey belongs on that second tier of American players(say hello to johnny).our first four should be (in no particular order) Shane Justin sky and mike d.the next ought to be rocket because he's been going abroad to face the world's toughest.hatch is behind him followed by shuff, jeremy, earl, corey, and johnny. Throw the pinoys and Taiwanese in the mix and our American team would be the fourth favorite.

I agree with Bergman being arguably the US most on form player and Sky is doing great also but unlike Bergman I have only seen sky play bar table. why does he not enter any tournaments on the 9ft? or 10ft? don't think he can be eligible for mosconi if he has very limited experience or the 9ft[/QUOTE]

Who wins from these two 5 man teams??

Brandon Shuff, Jeremy Sossei, Justin Bergman, Oscar Domenguez and SVB.

VS

Johnny Archer, Dennis Hatch, Earl Strickland, Rodney Morris and Mike Deshane.

Stop pointing out the obvious.
Just crazy what's happening...

LOL :D:D:D "Takeitdown", that's funny!!!! It's a little nutz %#@*^<.

I Would Guess

That the US Team will be SVB, Duel, Schmidt, Oscar and Jeremy. I don't think Shuff and the two Justin's will make the team. Yes they are winning but it has mostly been on bar boxes. Just my thoughts.

Wedge

By the way...we should stand behind the US Team and Mark rather than trying to say they have no chance!

Justin Bergman won against one of the toughest fields of the year on nine footers at Hard Times. Outside of Shane, none of the Mosconi eight have a win of this magnitude. Sossei, of course, has a win on the Joss tour, but that's not comparable to the Hard Times event. Sossei also beat Shane in the Steinway 10-ball classic.

For me, any team not including Shane, Bergman and Sossei would be a joke.

heard the same from a pretty good source.

If there are any brand-new faces to the Mosconi Cup on Team Europe this coming year, it may surprise us all.

Colonel, get the troops out of the hot sun, and let the campaign begin. :grin-square:

Being on home turf is going to be comfortable for Team Europe veterans, but if they're not veterans and brand-new to the Mosconi Cup scene, not only will it level the playing field, but it most definitely will be a pressure-cooker for all.

Maybe I'm part of the campaign for the next Team Europe by making this post well in advance of the player selection. :)

Dammit! I thought I got the last secret decoder ring with the attached divining rod.

Very informative post Jen, more info than some may recognize.

I might add, there's a plethora of reasons Matchroom goes about the team selection process, not all of which are as transparent as press releases might lead us to believe.

What a great idea, about the collage.

I wonder what would look good on a ceiling...

I am just a league player who enjoys the sport and plays for the fun of it so my thoughts don't carry much weight but from my perspective I'm happy to see a guy like Mark Wilson try to build a more professional team to represent our country.

I like what I read about his approach to training and assessing players strengths and weaknesses using quantifiable rather than subjective data. Although I realize the heart of a winner is hard to gauge.

I liked his plans to visit various cities in an attempt to raise the profile of the sport and market American pool. Too bad funding was a problem and that apparently won't happen.

They say all politics are local and the smart politicians realize that you win precinct by precinct so they get boots on the ground to bring their message to the masses. No one person can carry all the weight, it takes a well run organization to promote your message.

My point is that there doesn't seem to be any connection with the Mosconi teams and local pool rooms or leagues where the masses are. But I guess that is the root cause of the decline in American pool in general, nobody, no organization to bring the various factions together for the collective good.

I'm going to play the Powerball tonight. If I win Mr. Wilson will have the cash he needs to build first class training program. The odds are pretty long though, but not apparently as long as getting industry leaders to step up.
