As most of you know we leave Monday for the Texas leg of the Legends and Champioms Pool Tour.
We will be heading to Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Corpus Christy and El Paso. Do we have any Texans here that can recomend the best places for Real Texas BBQ? We like babyback ribs and brisket, your input is very much appreciated. We can't wait, Thanks Y'all

There is a place 30 minutes or so outside of Austin in the town of Taylor called Muellers, it is awesome!

When they get to Houston, the absolute best BBQ here is:

Thelma's Bar-B-Que
1020 Live Oak St.
Houston, TX 77003
713-228-2262

It is a very small place on the east side. It was featured on a PBS special about the best BBQ in the southern states.

There is simply nothing like it. Google the address for directions.

Austin, San Antonio and Houston all have Rudy's BBQ. The babyback ribs are choice and ask for the 'moist' brisket. I think it's better than Thelma's, although Thelma's has great brisket, also. 3rd place in Houston goes to Goode Company BBQ, which is probably the most popular.

Austin area also has the Saltlick, which is in Driftwood, TX. I've never heard f Mueller's but if the Donkey says it's good, I believe him!

If ya'll have time to play some golf in Houston, maybe we could go to Cypresswood or to Fish Creek, and Rudy's BBQ is on the way home from both of those spots.

Here are a few links that might help, but I can't vouch for most of the rankings. In fact some of the chains that are highly rated are not near the best BBQ IMO, but you can read the reviews and get a better idea of which ones you might like.

http://citysbest.aol.com/houston/best-dining/barbecue/

Personally I think the chain of Rudy's BBQ, and Rudy's Country Store & BBQ restaraunts are waaay overrated, even though they have a good following. Don't get me wrong, it's ok, but it's just not great, and it certainly doesn't live up to the hype. Bill Miller's BBQ is probably the biggest BBQ chain in Texas. Again, it's decent, but nothing to write home about either, and there are better places unless you just happen to be in a rush and need to use the drive through service. County Line is a chain of "upscale" BBQ restaraunts, and it's the same thing there. Pretty decent, but not worth it IMO when there are better places out there.

As a rule of thumb, you will not find the best BBQ at the chain restaraunts. Also as a rule of thumb, the nicer a place looks, the less you will be impressed by the BBQ. I've had the best luck in Mom and Pop places that look like they haven't been decorated, updated, or repaired in at least 20 years.

Thats exactly the kind of place I am looking for. I have found the best mexican or indian food is in the small places that are not a chain. I know they are out there cooking family receipies that just rock. I can go to Texas BBQ chain anywhere. I want the real deal with unprocesses cooked that day sauce with corn bread and home grown corn on the cobb. We need to know who they are and I will be posting the findings as we go. F&^ck I'm getting more hungry.

You better believer me Senor. Remeber last time you thought you could give me 10-7 and I said no u cant!

But seriously, if your looking for chain style bbq, sure go to Rudy's here in Austin. But If you make the drive to Louie Muellers(http://cityguide.aol.com/austin/tx/louie-mueller-barbecue/v-108927748/?invocationType=local-soam) you will get a taste of true Texas bbq. And it looks like pool playa said, it hasnt been remodeled in years. Best Bbq i have ever had.
Ok, I will take your advise on the run down place. For that area anyway. Thank you so much. I am amazed that there are no TX guys on here saying "I cook the best BBQ in the state come over" Thansks what I would have dsaid as I am quite proud of my BBq Sauces and cooking. Anyway I hope to get soem more ideas but right now it seems that there are just a couple of places that rocks in that bigass state, Still can't waity I'll bet its like sex out there with BBQ cos even when its bad its still pretty good I imaging only the guys can appreciate that :)

Here's a picture of the World Famous Thelma's BBQ in Houston. You can see the George R. Brown Convention Center in the background. It's where the BCA Trade Show was and also next to the place where Earl was inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame. :)

Salt lick.

Salt lick in Driftwood is probably the best in the Austin area. Rudy's is also good and there is Iron works in down town Austin that is great.

Lots of good recommendations here. I am hungry already. I am saving this post just for the next time I am hungry for some BBQ.

Now any good Chinese restaurants near G Cue, in Round Rock? Wok On Fire has pretty good pineapple fried rice.

dont want to hurt anyone's feelings buti live in austin and rudys and saltlick are way over rated. go to the towns of luling or elgin. thats where the best bar b que is.

if they serve it on a plate you're in the wrong place. butcher paper is the fine china of texas.

I have selective amnesia, sir, and therefore only remember the times I pwned.

And I can't say anything about Rudy's being a chain, because it is. But that label definitely does not do this place justice. Rudy's is no Chili's or Joe's Crab Shack.
