looking for opinions on the varieties of materials,i"ve been using double black linen, but it sometimes is not real black.would like to know what most are using for black and white joints and butt caps.thanx

I've recently used Juma as well,
Really like it, not just for ferrules anymore :D

Juma's too soft for my taste, does'nt seem much harder than MPI:(
Great, if your looking for a moochi like feel tho:grin:

Curious if the OP is using sheet, instead of rolled ,as i get great results with rolled, as long as it's blown off good, to clean the dust out of the pores first.

I don't find juma to be all that soft. I have used it as joint collars & the cues hit just fine. If anything, it's harder than the double black phenolic being produced nowadays. The phenolic is so pitty & porous, not enough resin. Other than dulling HSS cutters, I haven't found anything about juma that's bad.

Probably a lot cleaner, too.

Yes. It's tough to tap Kevlar. I live thread em then follow with the tap to clean it.
Can't do that with radial so I don't use them for radial.
Expensive stuff, not worth it.

Juma is cheap. I use it for rings sometimes. Never used it for shaft inserts but i'm sure it's great for that application. Kevlar is too abrasive. Strong but tough on cutters. Would kill a HSS tap pretty quick, i'd think.

Add me as another person who doesn't find juma to be all that soft. I disagree using juma for collars or butt caps is going to give my or anyone else's cues a moochi feel.

Maybe you got a bad batch. I got a porous batch of juma once and it was replaced by Atlas.

I put a 1" long white juma butt cap on a practice cue and repeatedly beat the butt cap against the edge of my drill press table. The juma barely dented.

Juma for shaft inserts, rings, collars, butt caps, and inlays here.

I could see why juma confuses everyone. It cuts like butter to a nice smooth finish. I have a unique taper shaper. Try indenting juma with that tang centering tool unique has with its machine. You wouldn't doubt the strength juma has.

I was suprised at the hit of Juma. After the machining I thought for sure it would be on the softer side but that was not the case at all. Juma can be used in cue making in a variety of ways and works great. Every application I have tried I have been happy with.

Shaft inserts was one that I have not tried but that will be next on my list.

Hmm, i think i'll try some more. I bought some ferrule blanks from atlas once, and i felt like they hit similar to mpi, could be they sent me the wrong blanks, or from a bad batch. I was judging it from how it hit, not how easy it cuts, and even with a harder tip on it, it felt meucci -ish.

I use Juma butt caps, joint caps, and ferrules. It has a great hit and is easy to work and finish.

I have used Juma for one joint and butt cap. It plays nice, but I don't have enough cues made to know if it is the Juma or the weight, taper, ferrule, curly maple, or tip. I've yet to have any double black linen be anything other than very black. I've used it on over a dozen cues.

The linen that I have been getting hasn't been all that great either. It has been on the lighter side as well as very porous. Not sure whats been going on but I think that I might switch to Juma as well. I've been looking for something to use for my joints also. Thanks.

Ive used juma on almost every cue and shaft ive made. The hit is great, i love how easy it cuts, it hold a finish very well, and so far its held up great. The only thing bad ive had happen is that sometimes it will "pop". Ive had a couple shafts i made that sat in my man cave for a month or so, and when i played with em, the ferrule was slightly larger than tne wood. I thought my shaft wood shrank, but the shafts ive made with phenolic collars stayed the same size.

No! You got the right stuff. Juma is not as soft as Meucci material, MPI, PVC or ABS, but it is still a softer material as far as the hit and feel it produces. It does play a good bit softer than linen phenolic or linen based melamine. As far as Black Linen Phenolic getting blacker when finishing it, the secret is the longer the finish stays wet the blacker it becomes. Fast drying fiinish like super glue and some others will not allow it to darken up to that jet black look.
