I am an avid dcc fan and i have been there every year, after i left this year i couldnt hel but wonder about how the upstairs "action" room has gone to hell. it seemed to me that they have turned the upstairs into a big pool leage event gone bad. Everytime i wondered upstairs all i could see were a bunch of league type people, i just dont feel that this atmosphere belongs at the dcc. I am not trying to offend anyone, i am in a vnea league myself but the dcc is a totally differnt type of venue. I would love to see less 7 footers upstairs and more 9 footers hell throw in a couple of snooker tables and just imagine the "action." does anyone else feel this way

The upstairs has become a room for the people who love pool, but can't compete with the tremendous amount of talent the assembles downstairs. The bar has plenty of action tables, and the main room after the tourney winds down is sufficient. Let some of the other players have some of fun too. Sam

the only problem with the action downstairs is that the tourney room doesnt wind down from matches until the wee hours of the morning and play resumes at 10 or 11 am that does leave much time for any marathon type action. i myself am not a world beater by any means but the derby isnt a place where everyone should bring their meucci, league patch, and table cue holder, they have huge league events in vegas a few times every year.

My friend 'or1pkt'.....I agree with you 1,000 000%. This venue is not supposed to be about league play - Somehow I don't think the Jansco brothers set aside any rooms for league players at Johnson City back in the day. The upstairs "gambling" room should have about ten 9 foot tables and a coupla bar tables for bar table action, and it should be used for hard core gambling just like downstairs. There's not enough tables downstairs to accomodate all of the people who want to gamble and people are constantly not able to match up because they can't get a table to play on. But there could also be a compromise = There's actually 2 rooms upstairs - a smaller room and a larger one....The larger room could be for the serious gambling, and the smaller room could have the bar tables for the league players to play each other for laughs and beers.

I agree 100%. I don't think there should have been a league event coinciding at this venue. But, I don't agree with a lot of things. I hope the league players came and watched the action and tournaments.

I definitely agree - I was very disappointed in the quantity of tables (to me, 7 footers don't even count as tables, they are just toys). I had 2 straight pool matches lined up, but neither day (Wed or Fri) could we find an open table to play on. In the main room there were the dreaded "mini-tournaments" right after the main event finished. These stupid mini's are even shorter race nine-ball (as if race to seven wasn't bad enough, they reduce it to race to 4), single elimination. Why not just play paper/rock/scissors, it would be just as interesting? I did not see a large number of spectators watching these mini's (somewhere close to zero). If they had left the tables open for gambling matches I think it would have generated more interest.

If there are large numbers of players who aren't skillful enough to play in the main event, they can ALWAYS get a game with weight from the pro's (instead of hiding away on the toy tables upstairs). I succeeded in getting a game from 2 world champions (of course we couldn't find a table to play it on), and I'm just a banger. Perhaps if there were more tables available (and less league play) there would be a wider variety of gambling games available.
 
Wheelchair player...

A buddy of mine goes to DCC just about yearly and he is in a wheelchair...as am I. I am rather scared to go because if I go, I want to play...don't care where how or what...I just will want to play. With that much action floating around there is no way I can not try to get my feet wet. My question is, would I be able to move around much or see much in my wheelchair? I dang sure need extra room to shoot when I play. The nice thing is my chair goes up and down so I can get to a higher height than most wheelchair players. What is the general consensus on room there?

I wasn't aware there were actually league events going on. Just the mini tournaments on the 7' tables. There are a lot of good players that go upstairs to play too. I've played several top notch players in the mini's, when I'm not playing downstairs. Maybe someone should tell George Breedlove not to play on the 7' tables upstairs. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to start something, and I'd like to see more tables too, but don't take the bar table area away from people who want to play in the small tournaments. I have a friend who plays real good who went just to play in the mini tournaments. There are a variety of events, and tables, so everyone can do what they want. I am not saying i have a big problem with these mini tournaments but either host them during the day or have like one short one at night. i liked the idea of splitting up the two rooms upstairs and just having one for league events and minis and the other for action. There is much more money to be won or lost sweating action than there is in these little nitty tournaments. i am not trying to be rude to less skilled players but you come to the derby to see champions in there element if you wanna watch lesser skilled players go go to your local pool leage bar and put your quarters up.

Hey Shorty, sounds like you have a lot of heart my friend. I would love to play ya sometime. I make it down to Flordia about once a year. Melbourn sounds like a nice place. What is it like down there? I am in Virginia. I ain't no world beater but love to meet new people and play. One of my favorite opponants is Jeff Dozell. He is also in a wheel chair. I am not but would probably play better if I was. I lost $40 to my wife last night. We play for pecker wad dollors. The money won must be spent on food and beverage when we go out. Now she only owes me $105.

I don't think you get it. Why are those tables upstairs?? $$$$$$$ . I didn't count but roughly 20 tables and if they have a mini tournament, probably 15 gtames an hour on each table. Do the math...20 x 15 = $300 an hour for say minimum 10 hours a day. That is $3000 a day for 9 days. $27,000 TOTAL. And this is a low estimate. Add in the league players that is squeezed in & who knows what the total is. Those tables & mini tournaments & league players aren't going anywhere. Now go to the action room, 7 Tables X What 9$10 an hour??) x 24 hours x 9 days = $16,800 TOTAL . So roughly the DCC has a pool room open for 10 days & does approx $44,000 in business (again low estimate). That is a pretty successful pool room they are running & would be stupid to do anything to change it just because some people don't want to be around league players or think mini tournaments are a waste of time.

well when you go up stairs it dosent seem like they re running a poolroom it seems more like a nitting lounge, it is a shame the old action days have gone by the wayside, unfortunately i think tournament promoters, pool leagues, women and jukeboxes are going to be the death of the action side of this game

thanks for the support godzilla, better yet instead of by the pool they could just find a local bar big enough for all those bar boxes and make sure that the bar has extra chalk in case someone looses their chalk on a stick or pocket chalker and it is a must that the bar be filled with big screen tv s so they can catch all the nascar races.

Sounds good Purdman, my table is always open for a game of one hole or whatever your game is. I got heart some say, but it's a fine line between heart and stupidity. I just never been scared of anyone on a pool table. It's a game, and if I lose I learn. We are having some great weather now, little cool snap, down in the low 30's last couple of nights, but back up to 65 today. Man I would not live anywhere else, and I completely understand why everyone retires to here! Never heard of Jeff, but I am sure I may bump into him eventually. I want to get out and play some more out and about over the next couple of years. Sounds like a cool deal with your wife, mine won't touch my table at all. She hates the game...I have begged her to try, but she is just not into it and will not compete at anything hardly. Oh well, should of put that in the wedding vows I suppose..."Love, honor, cherish, and bank the 9 as long as you both shall live?" HA HA

If you do manage to ever make it to the DCC I think you would enjoy it. There were several players in wheelchairs that made it around just fine. There is adequate playing room upstairs and downstairs. Spectating gets a little cramped but I don't think you would have a problem. Hope you make it there sooner or later...it is defintely an experience.

or1pkt...I guess I should quit the game...since in your opinion women will help be the downfall of the game. I think many people would beg to differ.

ladies, i apologize i didnt meant to be sexist i was more expressing my opinion of the wpba and their attitude toward the derby. i love women that play pool and truly enjoy the game and try to get better, please forgive me, i think i just need to find a girlfriend who likes pool :D
 
I agree the upstairs is now a joke

Ten yr. old boys up there all night long, I played a $1,000 set up there, and ten kids interupted me to ask me how much we were playing for. My opponent quit after one set, he probably would have played more with better atmosphere. Hope they bring the action back to upstairs, the lounge area was way to crowded. :o :p :o
