just a derby thought.

Ten yr. old boys up there all night long, I played a $1,000 set up there, and ten kids interupted me to ask me how much we were playing for. My opponent quit after one set, he probably would have played more with better atmosphere. Hope they bring the action back to upstairs, the lounge area was way to crowded. :o :p :o
thanks for your support gerald, by the way great book i ve read it twice keep up the good work

Why there were bar tables upstairs

I am an avid dcc fan and i have been there every year, after i left this year i couldnt hel but wonder about how the upstairs "action" room has gone to hell. it seemed to me that they have turned the upstairs into a big pool leage event gone bad. Everytime i wondered upstairs all i could see were a bunch of league type people, i just dont feel that this atmosphere belongs at the dcc. I am not trying to offend anyone, i am in a vnea league myself but the dcc is a totally differnt type of venue. I would love to see less 7 footers upstairs and more 9 footers hell throw in a couple of snooker tables and just imagine the "action." does anyone else feel this way

thanks

Unfortunately, by load codes I believe, Greg was unable to put the 9' tables single-slate tables upstairs anymore. That's why he moved those tables to the bar area. Next year, there will be even more.

That left all of upstairs, the previous "action rooms" empty. The best idea was to have the league event, put bar tables up there, generate coin drop, generate bar table action, and hopefull introduce more bar players to top level play.

I know it looked "odd." It did to me also, but Greg has really maximized the pool exposure to both the die hards and the not-so-die-hards.

Shorty,

If you do manage to ever make it to the DCC I think you would enjoy it. There were several players in wheelchairs that made it around just fine. There is adequate playing room upstairs and downstairs. Spectating gets a little cramped but I don't think you would have a problem. Hope you make it there sooner or later...it is defintely an experience.

or1pkt...I guess I should quit the game...since in your opinion women will help be the downfall of the game. I think many people would beg to differ.

Take care,
Sarah
sarah,

once again i apologise i really wasnt trying to be rude or trying knock on women pool players, but i want to ask you how do you truly feel about the derby and the wpba's boycott of it. Do you think they should change or do you support them what are some of the wpba,s major problems with the dcc?

thanks ( and please forgive me) :)

Let me tell you about this girl. She's a killer. A 9-ball monster. With a 29 mph break!! And unknown to most, she placed the highest of any female in last year's DCC 9-ball event. I don't know why that's not common knowledge.

Guess where she wanted to be last week?

Fred

Agreed...

I second most of what you said, or1pkt. The upstairs room was made into a league player's zoo. This was my 1st time at DCC and I found it a little distasteful to take a plane all the way to Louisville and still see the bar league environment upstairs. There is absolutely no excuse for bar tables at the DCC.
I also agree that the affable league culture is the death of this game yet (along with a bunch of other things). Your insensitive comment about women aside, I'd also say that the wpba's attitude towards gambling is complete rubbish. The 'let's clean up the image of pool' crowd really gets my goat.

29 Mph break? Holy crap! I gotta ask her how she does it. I am big on learning new break techniques...I have a helluva good break for a guy who weighs in at 85 pounds, but most of mine is technique. I break rather solid and try to control whitey as opposed to most who have no friggin clue where it is going. Nothing aggrivates me more than guys that just slam the rack, make three balls on the snap, and somehow manage to get out without a clue where the cue is going.

Sarah seems like one good darn player, and cute to boot. Would love to meet you up at DCC someday!

You Go Girl!

Sarah Can Play.
One night I was keeping an eye on one of my previous (and future) victims and thought he was just fooling around with this girl on one of the tourney tables for practice. When he went to get more tokens, I asked him to play and he said, Hell, I'm in action now, playing for $200 a set.
I watched Sarah play and was very impressed.
I used to be one of the old-timers who thought women didn't belong in a poolroom much less try to play.
I saw Allison Fisher giving an exhibition here in St. Louis and soon realized that she is truly a Great Player. My Son and the owner of this place wanted me to challenge her to a game and show her how the game should be played. I said: 1st, "She is here doing a damn good job and earning $ for her time & talent. She doesn’t need some OldHasBeen trying to steal her thunder". 2nd, "From what I'm seeing, (she missed only 3 balls in about 2 hours because she had to shoot very hard to force the cue ball for position), She could show me a thing or two and thats a Fact".
I have always said that - "If women wanted to play pool in tournaments, they should have to play even with the men". After all Mike Siegel & Nick Varner aren't any bigger than most women and the physical aspect doesn’t play a part. Look at Alex, Efren & Marcus.
I think I now know why they don't play in the Men’s tourneys - WHY SHOULD THEY - They are getting much more money in their tourneys because they are willing to work together to market their game.

TY & GL

Ps - I happen to know the guy who was putting Sarah "In Action" and if you have anything negative to say about Sarah, I'm sure he would be glad to address your concerns.

OldHasBeen---You know everybody! ........I'll see you at the Heaven tonight.

A friend of mine, Ryan, played Sarah getting the 8 ball about a year ago and was getting beat. One time, Ryan broke the balls kinda badly & I yelled out "I would say you break like a girl but I would be lying". That brought a smile to Sarah's face but she is a competitive gambler, completely emersed in the game. Looked like she has a lot of confidence in her ability & has the attitude that she is suppose to make everything.

With Sarah, Jeanette Lee, and a few other pro women players at the DCC maybe Greg should have thrown them a bone for their support & had them put on an exhibition match one night partnering them up with a top male player or something. I bet that would have garnered some interest AND ACTION.

or1pkt,

Thank's for the oportunity to explain some of the interworkings at the Derby. Some may remember my attempt to put 9fts. upstairs {3 piece slates were used}, especially remembering the one pocket match between Cooney and Walton. However a couple things happened that prevents me from using 9's anymore. The amount of set up time demands that I use the one piece slates and getting them upstairs would be Quite a challenge. Also the motel was concerned about weight problems using 9fts as they much heavier than the 7's............................................................
The coin drop on a 7ft. is very good, but a 9ft. on time is much better! I don't mind saying the Bar area is the cash cow at the Derby! I'm trying to put more 9's downstairs in a room between the restaurant and the bar, possibly 5 more. There's also a couple small rooms ajoining the bar which I may get the motel to let me use for something. I'm kinda outgrowing the site. I don't really want to move. It's taken a long time to establish the relationship I have and I really like alot of what they have to offer,,,,close to the airport etc....I've even turned them into a sponser getting a rebate off rooms. Without them the Derby couldn't add the amount it does................................ Since I can't use 9's upstairs the coin drop from the 7's and the gate money downstairs from the league players allow me to help as many top players with rooms and entry fees as I do. It's my job as a promoter to get the top players to the Derby for the short stops to try and beat them a match. I want average players to have a chance and have them consider it an honor to play the legends of the game. From the growth we are experiencing, some must be seeing it the same way.........................I'm happy to report everything was up this year except the gate. It was considerably less than last year, but that doesn't change anything.. The gate has never been what most other tournaments enjoy due to the low entry fee and short races. This turns many of my would be spectators into players. This is something I'm very proud of ......................................I really appreciate constructive comments. I don't want to use the swimming area for pool tables. Maybe someone on the forum has an idea of a better use. Let me know you're thoughts on this forum....or.....email me greg1849@aol....or....call me on my cell 812-989-6665...............thanks,

or1pkt...no offense was taken....it was just a misunderstanding. To answer your question...I totally disagree with the decision of the WPBA. I was looking forward to playing in all three events this year after my performance last year. Everyone wants to try and do better than the previous year. I am hoping that the WPBA changes their opinion about the tournament. This year was quite mild compared to last year.

Fred and OldHasBeen, I appreciate your kind words. I didn't get to play too much this year. I really enjoyed watching the action though.

watchez...I'm not sure which one of the guys you are that was there watching that game with Ryan....I was trying to forget about that one. Or maybe it was I was hoping everyone would forget about that! Thank you for your kind words as well.

Greg, I hope things are going alright with your health. It was another great year and I look forward to next year. I will get get in touch with you soon. I was looking forward to our meeting at the tournament. We will catch up eventually. Get well soon.

Take care,
Sarah

Thanks for your time Mr. Sullivan. You and your team have made something very special in kentucky. Thanks

Greg, hope you're doing better. The Derby is now the greatest tournament in the world. I hope you can expand it and manage to stay at the hotel. That really makes it convenient to wake up any time day or night and watch the action. We're all looking forward to next year and another great event. Sam

Sarah I cant figure out why the WPBA is so against gambling events. All their tournaments are in Casino's. So its okay to lose your money when the odds are against you? Against a corporate structure who has all the games rigged to their favor. It is an old American tradition to put up or shut up on what you think you are capable of. The women at the Derby can only help them and their game.

action tables

My friend 'or1pkt'.....I agree with you 1,000 000%. This venue is not supposed to be about league play - Somehow I don't think the Jansco brothers set aside any rooms for league players at Johnson City back in the day. The upstairs "gambling" room should have about ten 9 foot tables and a coupla bar tables for bar table action, and it should be used for hard core gambling just like downstairs. There's not enough tables downstairs to accomodate all of the people who want to gamble and people are constantly not able to match up because they can't get a table to play on. But there could also be a compromise = There's actually 2 rooms upstairs - a smaller room and a larger one....The larger room could be for the serious gambling, and the smaller room could have the bar tables for the league players to play each other for laughs and beers.
Being a league type player i agree that atleast one of the rooms upstairs should be a action room because I also would like to bet on some nice match ups also. I played in some of the mini tournaments and got to play some of the best players in the down stairs action but one room was plenty. If those mini tournament weren't there i probaly would have seen more action but if there's atable around I cant help but play!!!!

I didn't get to go to the Derby this year. However, from all accounts and from what I have been told by others who were present, this was the BIGGEST DCC ever. :)

I know some people who save up all year for this one event, and they would not miss it for anything. A few years ago, Truman Hogue and his wife told me that they look forward to coming to Louisville, and this is one tournament they plan on every single year.

It is really cool to have the event take place all under the same roof in the Executive West Hotel! That makes it so comfortable and convenient to attendees and players alike. Is it possible, pray tell, that the DCC has outgrown this HUGE hotel? Every single year, the hotel is booked up to the brim, and some folks, if they do not make their reservations ahead of time, have to find a place closeby to sleep; that is, whatever sleep they are fortunate enough to get (LOL). ;)

I think, without a doubt, it is the LARGEST competitive event there is in pool, but what makes it special is that it is open to players of all caliber, with no strings attached, and whether you're a bar banger or a professional player, there is a good time to be had by all. :)

Can't wait until next year!

I agree with Satman. They say Ringling Brothers is the greatest show on Earth...BULLSHIT...The Derby is definitely the greatest show on Earth.

Thanks for your effort.
