Justin Bergman looking to gamble

Actually, I could care less who is best, but I want to watch the match. Plus there is more money in exposure than gambling. Pool players generally dont like to acknowledge this however, which is why they usually die broke.

The problem is that there are very few pool fans (that love the pro scene enough to want to pay to watch) out there. I may be wrong. This is only an assumption. Are there really enough viewers out there (that would pay to watch a match that they would be very interested in seeing), and would it be enough to be profitable (worth their time), for everyone involved?

They need to do it like the ufc...when the prelims are on I have no idea who the fighters are...but by the time they are finished hyping them up with all the back stories I'm invested!

I know you guys that post here regularly are pool fans. But in the gambling world,no american pool player other than shane, are ever gonna play a phillipino pool player even for the cash in 9-10 ball. Bergman has even said that here. If you "do not understand that" then you haven't gambled much or seen many pinoys play for the money. Any American knows they need weight playing any top 10 phillipino ( chua, biado, gomez, cortezza, etc...) no American will EVER play these guys even, unless some stakehorse that just wants to give their money away, puts them in the box. Seriously folks, its ok to be a patriot, but we aren,t close to even with the pinoys, chinese,or taiwanese players.not close. I once heard chamat say that he went to the phillipines and played just to get better( chamat at that time was close to bergmans speed) he was actually talking to dechaine at the time, and he said when he got up and left his room each morning, that there was 10-20 pinoy teenagers waiting outside to offer him the 7 in 9 ball for money. These are pinoys that can,t get off the island and you will never see or hear from. There are literally about 100 guys in the phillipines that will play any American (except shane) and they will definitely be favored in a long match against any American. Probably 30 or so will be favored over bergman. It's truly a different level of play. Our players will tell you the same if put on the spot.

I wonder if Shane has traveled over there to gamble with the Filipinos (or to other parts of Asia, looking for games).

Lol, that is a good point you make. Maybe if it were 30 or 40 years ago, when you could stay in a room for a few dollars a night, then it may have been workable. If only there were some millionaire that loved the idea enough to put the money up for hotel expenses (and then maybe the winner could give that person a % of the winnings, or at least their money back that was paid for the hotel rooms), then it might be doable.

Yeah, but we have spoken of the golden goose before...people don't get rich by throwing money at things that have 0 chance of return.

Closest thing we had was Trudeau
IMO...and even he had angles.

(ButSiegel had the best angle on that deal, I gotta say.)

Oh,my fault, i thought we were talking about current pool.earl wouldn,t ask for weight in the 80s and johnny in the 90s. Buddy in the 70s either, but that certainly doesn't mean any of them would win playing the pinoys. My POINT is that there are literally 100-200 players there that play as good or better than our top pros.they will never be seen or heard from in tournament pool because they are not allowed to get their travel visas and pursue a career as a touring pro. If you think the 7 doesn,t show up gambling on a 9 foot diamond, especially a tight one,you aren't very knowledgeable matching up gambling. Yes a pro would prefer to get games on the wire, but only if it's ENOUGH games to be a better spot than the 7.

I learned my lesson well and good pretty early. Andam came in offering our home town hero Cigar Tom ( who routinely beat top pros to death all over ) the 7 ball! Tom had long said he would take the 7 ball from anyone living . Well the first match went down in my poo.room. standing room only and of course we all bet. Tom had him 10-3 going to 13. Amdams backers asked of anyone wanted to bet more. Never another shot, lost 13-10. Re,at church shortly after, Tom got the 6! Bigger slaughter than the first. Real hard to do but for about a week the pinoys cleaned out Glen Burnie AND Dundalk and I was there to see it😕

100 Fiipinos lol... I would say there is about 10-20 that are world class level. Some are just a hair better than others. They do have a ton of good players but I promise you I will play 100 of them and come out winner. If you don't believe me then stake them.

There have been several American players before Shane who took on the top guys in the Philippines with varying levels of success. Rodney won pretty good over there when he first went as a young man. He took on the best of them too! Nick Varner beat Efren in a big money match and played a few other top guys as well. Johnny played everyone even as well and won some and lost some.

IMO Justin could make money over there just by avoiding the top ten or twelve players. EVERYONE likes to gamble over there and not all of them play Justin's speed. I could take him there and make money, but he would get burned up pretty fast after he beat a couple of the high level shortstops. A big game there is for maybe five hundred to a thousand dollars so it just isn't worth the time and effort unless you were just looking to improve your game with constant competition.

John Morra really honed his game in the year he spent there. He returned playing about two speeds better than before. Skylar jumped a full speed after his stay over there. Players like Darren and Mika also paid their dues in the Philippines and it helped them immensely in the long run. Hell, I used to play in all the back alley rooms for a few hundred pesos a game for many years and had the time of my life. Mostly we played Rotation which is a great pool game. I remember playing one guy who owned a small poolroom (five tables) in an old shopping mall in Pasay City. We played for 1,000P a game (about $25) and the place was lined with people sweating (and betting) the match. They would cheer for my good shots as well as his. I must have played him four or five times and came out winners about half the time. I could still play a little ten years ago.

If our second best American player wont gamble against Filipinos. We should just drop out of the Mosconi Cup and let them have our spot.

I have no facts, but maybe that's his backer's rule.

Thanks for the education. May have missed my point though.

I got your point. But I'm sure that between Justin and his backer, they both have a pretty good idea on what players they need to play to score.
