Kevin Varney's cue construction Pictures

reguardless of this and that there are a few facts that stick out here.

1 the cue was broken do to misues. accident or not facts are facts.
2 kevin offered to fix the cue. thats all that matters

i can assure you there have been many makers in the world that made flat ajoints that havent broken. i for one am not a fan but who really knows who does and who doesnt?
i pretty sure meucci is one. how many of them havent broken over the last 30 years?

Regardless of the Kevin "this" and Kevin "that" stuff here.

The fact that the OP attacked Kevin without giving him the chance to make good speaks volumes about this guy.

He bought a cue second hand and Kevin offered to make good on it.

The guy refused and just keeps on bashing.

That's just rediculous.........

Russ
you get my "BEST AVATAR" vote!!!
wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RUSS,
I SEE WHAT YOU ARE SAYING, BUT THE PATHETIC CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES SHOWN IN THESE PICS SPEAKS VOLUMES.

TO MAKE IT EVEN BETTER, HE TRIES TO MAKE AN EXCUSE FOR HIS POOR CONSTRUCTION BY SAYING THAT TENONS (THE PROPER METHOD) ARE NO GOOD.

Maybe you should just contact him instaed of throwing him under the bus why ask to ban him cause a cue broke? It looks like it would take a little more then falling off a chair to do that .id contact him first that would be the right thing to do.

Lee I'am surprized that you would say that, When I returned a defective part to you in Jan. You said 2 weeks to ship a new one. 9 months later guess what , no part. When I contacted you and told you forget it, that I would just apply that $100.00 towards a veneer jig, your exact words to me were.. and I quote ( your trying to get something for nothing.) and you hung up on me. WHAT A GREAT WAY TO DO BIZZ. If I operated in that manor I wouldn't be in Bizz very long.

That's how I read the referenced thread (@ a cue Efren Reyes may have used, it's in this cue gallery forum). Actually, by Kevin starting that thread, it may end up unveiling some very shady crap. If another thief gets exposed, that's a good thing in my book. Kevin, have you made contact with Olive? (btw, good of you to offer to fix the cue in question here)

Only time will tell, but I would not want to be Kevin right now. He is getting it from the front and the back, if he sends the cue back to Olive, OP Cue will call him a thief, if he sends the Cue to OP Cues Olive will call him a thief.

Now, I know what I would do, but I am making Popcorn waiting to see what Kevin Does!!!!!!

He has to send it back to the person that sent it to him........ as stupid as they may be for actually trusting him with any cue better than a Player's.....

Ross, I will tell you what happened in my shop in 2008, when some ones cues is stolen locally I normally get a call from people telling me to be on the look out. I had a cue brought in for repair that I recognized as stolen and told the person who brought in that it was stolen. Now I did not know the guy or where he got the cue. But, I will tell you this the cue did not leave my shop that day. I offered to call the Police to resolve the situation the gentleman who brought the cue in left in a hurry. If I was in this situation I would contact the Police and let the Law deal with who owns the cue, that way in this situation I would not get stuck being the pivot man, and hopefully the rightful own will be served.

I have owned several cues that have been very solid in this way including an Andy Gilbert and a Mace. I also had a McDermott that was threaded into wood only at the shaft and it played great. I broke that McDermott several times when I was younger and glued it back together at the bottom of the shaft and each time it still played great.

To me this is not a defect in construction. I have had a Schon and a Prather both fall over and shear and both cue makers replaced the cues at no cost because the wood itself was defective inside.

Mr. Varney has offered to replace the cue. Hopefully he can do that in less than a year or two. It is however not fair to say that the technique he used is no good because other cue makers have been successfully using it for decades. As to Mr. Varney's track record on service issues I would be hesitant to deal with him based on the problems brought to light on this board.

As it happens though I have hit with a few of his cues and the man builds or assembles a very good hitting cue in my opinion. Perhaps he just needs a manager.

Another great cue maker with similar issues is Ted Harris. Ted's cue is one of my most prized possessions and if I hadn't bought it from him at the Super Billiards Expo then I would not have one because I would not have wanted to be on an endless wait cycle.

Thank you Lee, but save your breath. I really don't see the problem here to be honest. I missed the mandatory construction meeting. Cut up some more Varney's...you'll find some other crazy stuff too...I promise. Back before I built cues I was a cue fan & owned way too many...I learned what hit good & played good to me & developed a taste. Two cues not really meant to be "players" were the jump breaks by Gilbert & Howard. Both attached flat face at the A joint & play exceptional. I've tried every way possible to join a cue...and some that aren't possible...I assure you. Cuemakers really like the flatface hit and many are using that as their main joint...and everyone knows about how good it hits. The trick is to make it feel like a 1pc. So why not expand that a tad. Flat face the A joint & see how it hits. Too me the tenon method leaves to much to go wrong as in poor glued area or air pocket....and be easier to create an odd buzz. The flatface keeps it simple. Notice no air pockets in your pic. I've tried every senario...long pin for strength....shorter pin for hit so the metal doesn't break it up...G10 joint...its endless if you have the time. While I now do use a longer screw in the A joint....there was nothing wrong with the one in the pic & it would not of broken under normal use. Break a few more...you find lots & lots of experimental work...you'll find A joints made of tenons, wood screws, threaded G10, pins insulated by ABS & phenolic, radial pin connectors...trust me, I've used them all.
Are you even aware of some of the other cuemakers who use that very joint & have in the past? You may be shocked. You build yours your way & I'll build mine my way. When I get it perfect I'll let you know. Until then there may very well be some more experimentation as well.
Now Mr. Hoppefan...I have no clue who you are nor did you purchase that cue from me. And you've also tried your best attempt to ruin me here. While I have many friends & happy customers here on AZ...a few AZ'ers really amaze me. Did you ever even attempt to contact me before this thread? No. I will do this though...send me the cue & shaft back...and I'll replace it...no charge. Try not to break the next one in half.

I won't comment on the construction method, but do you really think a tenon a-joint has a poor glue area compared to a flat faced a-joint?

anyone that's kept up with KV's threads knows me and him aren't exactly friends. but to get back to the point dave's 100% right.

the cue may or may not have been made the way some people think a cue should be made but KV did offer to make it right.

The trouble with KV offering to fix it is that if you send it to him you may NEVER get it back. Hell from KV's history I'd say he was lucky to get it in the first place.

That's what I was thinking also. How many times has he offered this or that, then when someone takes him up on something, it never happens? His word is no good anymore.

Maybe he should just give him a chance as the cue is absolutely worthless as it is now. If it is not returned the only thing you will be out is the shipping.

Well I say; Take it to someone that will fix it and return it and save on the shipping. That way KV can't fix it up and sell it to someone else a second time.
