Does anyone have any good reccomendations for good kick shot training methods? This is about the weakest part of my game, and for some reason, i haven't really put time into learning how to kick accurately.

I know the amount of english, the rail, and the speed you hit the ball at play a factor... But i would like to find a good learning tool to help improve this aspect of my game.

Any help or suggestion is appreciated.

I really can't speak to any methods/systems, etc. I've always been a "feel" player. I used to practice kick shots as much as I practiced anything else. In my opinion, that's really what it comes down to .. putting in the work.

My point in posting is that it is well worth it to put that work in. Whether you use some system or not. A risk with using a system for kick shots, in my opinion, is that your tendency may be to rely upon your knowledge of the system as a basis for less practice. You learn the "math" - do the "math" - use the "math" to make 2 shots in a row and think "I'm good." Who knows, maybe I'm out in left field because I've never learned a kick system. I don't think they are bad by any stretch, as long as you continue to practice them.

To emphasize importance of the shot though, the key point in my match last night was a three rail kick safety that came after my opponent played safe on me. Wasn't a difficult shot really, but it completely demoralized him.

I agree totally. And of the 100% of my overall play/ drills/ practice, i bet not even 1% is practicing kicks. I can usually hit a ball when i kick, but i want to learn a method i can "double check" my guess with. Like i said before, i know ball speed, english and the rail(s) play into the kick... Just wanted to feel other members out on the board as to where a good place to start would be.

I bank fairly well, but i use the "intersecting lines" method to double check myself sometimes. Just want to be able to do the same with kicks.

Thanks for the input so far guys!

This is the key: Putting in the work.

I'll be the umpteenth one to highly recommend Lil Joe Villalpando's DVD. There are a lot of good instructionals out there but many of them tend to make my eyes glaze over. You need to add two distances together, multiply by pi, divide that by the number of rails you are hitting and then half the distance to the brunette over there with the big tatas. There are some more steps after that but I never make it past the brunette with the big boobs. Joe's DVD's are simple, thoroughly explained, and don't involve brunette's boobs.

One thing about kicking or banking, often we have to modify things a bit and then speed becomes critical. When practicing try to find a speed you like to shoot that shot and use it for a baseline. Unless there is a reason not to, shoot the shot at that speed. If you do need to change speed, know how that is going to affect the shot.

One more thing, if the brunette has a bottom to match get her number for me, I'm half Italian!

Not a System...Just a tip.

Don't take your fundamentals for granted when kicking at balls. I've fallen prey to this quite often. You figure out your path, and then you just sort of fire the cue ball on its way. Why would you need to approach your shot line properly, and stay down on the shot, and all that....I mean your just sending the cue ball into the rail somewhere right???

I do that a lot and it really kills me on the softer kick shots since this is where my stroke tends to break down more so than when I strike the cue ball more firmly.

So, remember to stay down and all that...it helps.

In my opinion, the best compilation of kicking methods on video is presented by Jimmy Ried in his "Almost All I know" series of DVDs. I believe he sells the DVDs via eBay, and they are very reasonably priced for the many hours of instruction that you get. He demonstraits several diamond systems, double the distance, spot on the wall, 1/2/3/3+ rail kicks are all explained. It's good stuff. Get it and you won't be disappointed.

I have a great enthusiasm for kicking and am also one of those guys who goes by feel. Never have looked into any of the kicking systems.

I had a chance at last year's SBE to meet Little Joe. He had a diamond table at his booth and he invited me to hit (kick) some balls with him. It was one of the absolute highlites of the entire event for me.

A good-sized crowd gathered watching us trade kickshots; it was a real blast. :)

Besides being a heck of a nice guy, Joe seems to have taken what he knows about the kicking game (a lot) and produced a rock solid training program.

I'm basing this on my having seen a number of well regarded people who have reviewed Little Joe's kicking system and highly recommended it.

I'm thinking about getting Lil Joe's kicking DVD. How is his Cue Ball Control disc? They have them as a package deal.

My funds are kinda tight right now and I'm sure they're both good....and I hate to pass up a deal, but thought I'd get some feedback/reviews before I spent money that I shouldn't spend right now.

http://www.pooliq.net/buydvd.htm for Lil Joe's stuff.

I really enjoy kicks and banks, so I have the itch to get the kicking one for sure.

i have joes dvds, teachme pools dvd, deadaim kicking academy pdf
and have read all of scotts articles:eek::thumbup:
here is my 2 cents
in some ways they (all the dvds)are all complimentary because kicking systems can be confusing until you use them enough to "own "them
sometimes hearing something said or reading the same thing helps to reinforce what you are learning
joes dvd is in an easy to assimilate presentaion although many "subtleties" are not explored its a great starting point
btw his 2 rail system using 7.5 as the bottom corner pocket ive never seen anywhere else
RECOMMENDED
STRONGLY RECOMMENDED FOR THE BEGINNER
teach me pool has more info in one dvd than ive EVER seen in a teaching dvd i still go back and watch some things and pickup little details i overlooked
STRONGLY RECCOMMEND
deadaim pdf is also a treasure trove of info
its advantage is that its in a paper format once you print it so you can take the pages you want to study to the pool hall and have a "cheat sheet" to practice and remember the systems as you learn them
STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
scotts articles are very clear and can be printed
STRONGLY RECOMMENDED

my advice
best bang for the buck teachmepool 202
scitts articles and deadaim academy pdf FREE cant beat that price
joes dvd great starting point

Thanks, bbb.

I have DeadAim's free PDF and Scott's articles. I also have both of Dr. Dave's VEPS and VEPP series.

I'm going to check out the TeachMePool thing before I pull the trigger.
