Hello everyone. I've been a member here for awhile, and I've made a few posts, but I never really introduced myself. I'm from Wisconsin, but I'm currently deployed to Iraq. It's my third time here. I get to come home in less than a month now, which is awesome, and then I will be out of the National Guard. When it's all said and done from 2005-2010 2008 will have been the only year where I did not spend at least one day in Iraq. I try and play as much as I can here, but the equipment isn't the greatest and there's not much competition (I'm the only one I've seen B&R any tables since I've been here), so most of the time I just hit balls around so I'm not completely out of stroke when I get home. I can't wait to get home so I can actually play a real game of pool with real rules.

As far as my ability goes, I suppose I'm a bit better than the average banger. I mainly play on bar boxes, and have one in the house back home. My best I've strung together is three racks of barbox eight ball, so hopefully I can improve upon that with some more practice.

Well I'm pretty bored here, and the days are going so slow with only one month to go. I figured since I read the forums so much I'll try and contribute some now too ;).

Thanks for your service. Look forward to your future posts. How bad is the equipment on the eastern front, maybe you can post a picture of the tables and equipment you have run across.

Well when I was here in 06-07 I used to do convoy escorts, so I got to visit a lot of bases, and I found some places would have complete junk that weren't even worth playing on, and others were decent. I actually came across one pretty nice gold crown at one base. The MWR building here has four eight foot tables, and some decent house cues. I used to use my McD here until I broke the tip off. Out of the four tables there is only one without seems in it, so that's the one I always play on, and I make sure I always get the new set of balls. That's another thing some places have really old crappy balls. They get abused quite a bit by the Ugandans here that do base security. Those guys are constantly banging balls 100 mph, and shooting scoop shots, and it just makes me cringe. That one table though, with the decent set of balls works out fine for me.

Thanks for your service. Without guys and ladies like you we would not have the freedom to do what we do here states side Cheers to you!! Wish I could buy you a couple of drinks and shoot some pool. If your ever in Southern Cali. look me up. Stay safe and look forward to seeing more of your post and hearing your back.

Happy Holidays,
Darin

As the others have said thanks for your service. Where in Wisconsin are you from? Im near the Eau Claire area. Id say I'm just above banger level as well, so if were near enough, when you get home we could play a few games.

legend2004...Welcome to the forums! Please keep your head down for the next month! NO REALLY! Thank you for going out there protecting our way of life here at home...but it's scary out there. Tough to know who's friendly or not. IED's are a way of life. Be careful, come home in one piece...and then get to playin' pool!

Thanks Scott. Luckily though, I have pretty much spent this whole deployment inside the wire. I think I've gone outside the wire like 5 times this whole year, and won't be anymore. Last time I was outside the wire every day, so I know all about IEDs.

Hey Legend! THANK YOU for protecting my skinny ass. I know I don't deserve it. I'll share something with you about the great filipino players. Most of them grew up playing on junk tables. I've seen them over there - bad cloth, bad rolls, bad balls, the works! And yet they learn how to play. When they finally get the chance to play on good equipment it's all over. They never miss a ball. Just ask Shane.

I think one small benefit of your time over there is that you will actually come back a better player than before. It's a challenge trying to play with bad equipment. You have to figure out ways to play with a cheap cue (shape and rough the tip), overcome funny rolls (play the most open position possible), and get out of impossible traps (work on kicking and jumping).

You'll probably end up being a Legend back here too. Look out Van Boening!

Thank you for your service. This United States of America enjoys many freedoms that other countries do not, and it is because of men and women like you -- soldiers, coasties, reserve, guard, sailors, marines, and airmen -- that I have a good life in this country. God bless you, and I hope the month flies by and you're back on American soil soon.

As everyone has said, thank you for your service to our country. It is truly appreciated.

Be safe, take care.

in my heart

My heart bursts with pride that our country can produce men and women like you who have the courage to go in harms way to protect our undeserving asses. Here's hoping that you spend the rest of your life not, "behind the wire," but with, " games on the wire.":duck::wink:

Yeah you definitely get good at shooting shots firm so they don't roll off, lol.

Legend is just a name I picked up in my hometown bar, and not because of my pool playing ability, lol.... Maybe I should save that for another thread ha ha.

I'm around La Crosse, so yeah maybe sometime.
