Larry Hill/Gabby

Do you know why he was in? I played him back at Red's.

I believe he was implicated in a series of home invasion robberies. One of the Texas guys should know the details. He had been in there for more than a decade.

According to a guy here who used to run with him, he stole a ring by biting a woman's finger off.

Hey, speaking of biting...I have a good game with T-Rex in Sacramento, but am waiting for my S/S check. Have any horses come in?

For stealing from ladies in the Houston area, and sometimes by biting their fingers off, as sixpack stated. I hear he (or his 'helper') would knock on the door and ask for directions or needed to use a phone and then rob them.

I didn't know he died in prison. Wow.

We all saw him on TV one day, handcuffed and in an orange jump suit, as 'the guy police caught for the crimes' - we were all shocked he was the one accused of being involved in hurting all those older ladies (the crimes were a big news story around Houston when it was happening).

Gaby was one hell-of-a player. Too bad about everything else with him.

As it was told to me.

Gabby was robbing an older woman and couldn't get the ring off her finger.

He took some tin snips and cut her finger off. The lady later died.

Once convicted and sent away, Gabby ended up in prison with the lady's nephew. He and his gang eventually figured out whho Gabby was and beat him to death in the middle of the prison yard. Seemed like a reasonable reaction to me.

He was though at one time a hell of a player.

I heard recently he was really good player. Too bad I didn't get a chance to see him play. Does anyone have any old pool stories on him playing pool so I can have an idea how good he was?

cuetechustla...As far as I'm concerned, the guy was a worthless POS, and got what he deserved. He doesn't even deserve reviving a 3-yr old thread.

Yeah, maybe he would have eyed your ring and killed you.

Gabby got his nickname because he just didn't talk while playing. I mean zero, nada, nothing. He wouldn't say a word for hours. I played him in my poolroom in Bakersfield in the 70's and when I spoke to him, he just nodded. I thought he might be mute until after we finished and he said, "thank you." The guy who backed him made the game for him and did all the talking. He was a terrific player, 'A' list for sure. Drugs got him off on the wrong path.

I played him five times during my yrs in Los Angeles probably 1978-79-80, he traveled with one or two backers/pimp looking, ea time we hooked up, probably played him a total of 20hrs. His expression the last two times we played "Slim I can't beat you". I think he played better in the early 80's than late 70's and do remember him matching up with Jerry Brock/Houston Reds/when Jerry was using a titanium shaft that was supposed to be the next majic bullet. Late 70's he played just under me, definitely under Hawaiian Brian, probably beat most all the Mexicans at that time cept for Little Al Romero, and of course he was 3 balls under ether at that time, I was 2 balls under him then, Hawiian 1 1/2 under him. Sounds like drugs took him for a ride, but he was always nice, smiled, payed off and never a threat to your person back in that time period.
