Roadkill...LOTS of young boys from S. IN and N. KY come from farms. Nick left the farm way behind him, when he went to college at Purdue. As a poolplayer, he's never been known, nick-named, recognized, or called any kind of 'farmer'!

From the Bio on his website:

"The young farm boy soon became a familiar sight in the pool room pulling a coke case around the table so that he could reach the shots on the table. By the time he graduated from high school, Varner had become a top local player."

I like the moniker and thing it's fitting. Young boy from the farm makes good.

Ever thought he might not WANT to be known as the Farmer? I think you are being a bit presumptous to use a nickname no one else in pool calls him by. There might have been a REASON he left the farm and went to college. Ever thought of that???

If you need a nickname for him, call him "The Little Giant" or The Colonel", both name by which he is widely known.

Russ: I never referred to him as the farmer, only trying to find some explanation for the earlier reference.

I agree with you Scott. I've NEVER heard him called that even once, outside of this thread.

As Russ mentioned, Nick's monikers include "The Colonel" and the "Little Giant", even "The Kentucky Colonel" and "Nick the Stick".

However, my personal all time favorite nickname for Nick is "The Little Gorilla", bestowed upon him by Hubert Cokes. This for how hard he fought in every rack!

I think if we could get Larry to down a box of bazooka Joe bubblegum he might have a chance against Nick! I think Incardona summed it up nice and I really liked Russ' assessment too. Philw

Or just call him "one of the greatest all-around players to ever play pool." I know, that's a bit long for a nickname.

Nick Varner may be my favorite player of all time. We hail from the same state, and I have never known any player with more heart and more fight than Nick.

No way could 2008 nick varner beat larry nevel... Not even close.
Ding-ding-ding!! Winner. Sorry, but I have to totally agree with this current assessment. Nick is one of my heroes, but time has taken some of the sting out of his game and right now, Larry wins pretty convincingly in the long run. JMO

I'm not really sure what would happen with 2008 Nick vs. Larry, but late 80s early 90s Nick would horsef--k Larry! Peersonally I think this would be a joke, and really don't know how you could question it. Nick was the best in the world for awhile, and Larry isn't even top 20, probably not top 100!

Just to throw this out to you all. You dont have to try to make up some fantasy game with me and someone who really doesnt play that much anymore. Nobody knows what would happened if I even played in the 80's. Especially because there was alot more pool back then. For what I get a chance to play in I think my record is pretty good. In the last 15 tournaments I have played in I have placed 1 fourth, 3 seconds and have won 11 of them. There is alot of people out there that question me gambling and who have I ever beat. Well, I am not going to be like John Schmidt and ask for action on here then make a list of twenty players who I wont play....Let it be known that any american player can get some action in my home room playing me a 9 ball set for atleast a couple of thousand. Play will be rack your own ahead set or race. I havent won any major tournaments, so all you US Open winners and big tourney winners can play a nobody. This does include you John Schmidt, SVB, Corey, Dennis Hatch or anyone else.

Larry, I have said it before...I think you and Hatch would be a helluva match for a TAR challenge. It would be an old fashioned shootout at the O.K. Corale. JMO.

for the record i think you are in the top 20 in the world and im curious where you play out of?

Kudos to you, Larry!!!

Sitr it up man!! I for one am glad that you have come on here to post. I like this forum when the pros come on here and give their opinion FWIW. Heck, you are the only pro I have ever played. I played you first round at DCC 2007 in the banks. I lost a close set to you on undoubtedly your worst day and my best. You were great to play against that day as the competitor came out in the both of us. Rock on!!

I would be more than happy to put Cory or Shane in. I cant speak for Shane, but I assume both he and Cory will want to play for more than a few k. You got me for 10k ahead sets. Let me know, and this isnt woofing.
