Latest edition of the Scooter and Tedder show....

Shakinthetreeboss! One of my favorite movies. Cool Hand Luke! Robbing parking meters was his crime. Don't think he ever got his mind right. Pretty nice car wash scene too!

Funniest excuse I have ever heard for not being able to beat someone.

It does wear on the working stiff if you are gambling against what feels like an unlimited bankroll.

I mean Renfro is right that it plays on your mind betting high with your own money and a loss means 3 weeks of real work.

I used to play a meth dealer. Not only did I have to fade the swings but I also had to fade the amounts he wanted to play for. I knew I was the better player BUT I did get a little jelly armed a few times when we were betting 1500 a set.

I understand what you are saying but I know that you realize there are people, some being working stiffs, who see this game as a blessing.

Of course. I saw it as a blessing but it was still hard to learn to fade the high roll. I would say that there are far more 9-5 working people who get the high speed wobbles than there are ones who don't.

You see it's not a lock that you are ALWAYS going to beat the meth dealer, the car wash thief, the pimp, because once you play them for a 1000 then you always have to play them for 1000+

They don't give a shit if they lose 3 months of your salary to you. But what do you do with it? Do you put that money away and then wait until they are ready to play and use that as your starting bankroll? Of course not, you spend it, put it back in action, and other wise use it. So next time Vespa Change Machine sees you then it's on, this time let's play for 2000, 3000 etc...

That's the point Chris and I are making.

There is something special about how quick many AZers pile it on when a good player screws up. I know, if you all wanted to you "waste" your life and play pool you could probably beat Shane every day. If the good players had jobs they would never be able to beat you. When players get backed it isn't as valuable as betting your own like you all do. Pool players are scum, stupid, and miscreants of the worst degree yet so many join the ranks of AZ to give their expert advice and oh so valuable opinions. People always argue about what's wrong with pool and it is the general pool population.
...
It is just ridiculous how some of the people just keep going with it. If they need something to do get in the car and go play someone. Even me, if I do happen to win I will send some to Scooter and Tater if they have to do time. I am a school teacher so you don't have to worry since you all can probably beat anyone with a career.

I have went a LONG time saying nothing prior to this. I have known Jonathan Tedder since he started playing pool in Boaz, AL. What you fail to see is that some of us KNOW that not all but certain "Pool players are scum, stupid, and miscreants of the worst degree ". Although your exaggeration is a little strong, I didn't call them baby rapists or murderers. In case you wonder why someone would dog these guys (I am only speaking of Tedder since I have no knowledge of Scooter), I'll go ahead and blast him:

1. Watched him go totally broke and strand himself and his girlfriend 300 miles from home. She was a super nice girl who I don't understand how she ever put up with him. I offered to pay for her way home, but not if she wasted it with him.
2. He dumped his backer. You can ask how I know since there are only two people that truly know for sure and I will answer honestly that I was the other guy. I felt horrible about it and have admitted it multiple times since. I was a stupid 17 year old kid but that doesn't excuse it. Just proves for sure he did it once and certainly lends validity to the claims that he has done it many (maybe over a 100) times.
3. He air-barreled me one time for $200. I eventually got it back 6 months later but I had to drive over to him to get it.
4. He owed me $1,000 for years and finally I got $500 of it. This was from a loan not gambling. He still owes me $500 now ten years later.

You can say they were great guys when you gambled with them one time, but that doesn't mean they deserve any slack.

When I was younger and playing dealers, I loved it! Granted they were small time for the most part, but harmless to me since they liked playing me. It was like having an ATM that filled up every day.

And I didn't feel bad at all because I knew it wasn't their hard earned money.

Regardless of how stupid it was to do it still sucks. I feel bad for them [and for the car wash owners who they got] and hope things somehow work out for them. I enjoy them around the poolroom when we cross paths and they usually get something going. I really don't care where they get their money and they sure do put what they have into play.

Scooter shouldn't have done what he did but he is going to pay enough for his actions already without the unnecessary bashing, jokes, and general ridicule. I am not attacking everyone who has posted. It is just ridiculous how some of the people just keep going with it. If they need something to do get in the car and go play someone. Aww, come on, man! If you were to rate their actions on a 'badness' scale of 1-10, what would that # be?

And then the same scale's rating of AZB's 'piling on'?

AZB's input doesn't even register, IMO. They were bad boys.

REP for #2. Takes character to admit.

I know what you guys mean and agree with the blessing being somewhat of a curse.

I used to play a guy who had all kinds of dirty money. I beat him for so many $2-500's , I thought I was on the payroll.

Well, he learns to play and I am not around the pool room too much, I am now working for ~$20/hr and he wants to play 2/3 for $500. That is more than I am taking home weekly annd he wants to bet it on something that will probably take 45 min to get through.

I overheard him talking to someone who asked him how he could fade all the beatings and he said: I got boxes of money sitting around the house. WTF am I gonna do with it? I cant put it in the bank.

Once you beat them out of $1000 you always have to play for $1000? Come on John. When that session is over then you do as you please. From what I've seen it would take quite a man to pressure you into a game you don't like. If you want more action you are going to accept it but if you decide the game is too tough when that session is over I don't see you being pressured into giving the money back. It's time to quit reading the tables and start reading the situation. Start wagging your tounge in order to get out.

JB could never argue his way out of anything.

Maybe he is dispute-disabled. OR NOT!

Tedder was given 2,000 to play me some 1,000 sets. The stake horse left and before he got back we quit even, and Tedder ran off with the guys 2000. It was the first time he had met the guy, and got talked into staking him from a guy telling him he had the nutts.. He put a collector on Tedder and did get some of the money back.

You don't get it. I thought you knew a little bit about action. Well, you stick to whatever you think happens in the pool room and I will stick to what I know happens in the pool room.

You may think you get to play against gangsters and dealers and beat them out of thousands and then walk in the next day and say you just want to play $100 sets but that's not how it goes. The same goes for playing backed players. If their backer likes the game then he will let his player play you again but not for a 10th of the previous bet.

If you want to play them then they start you out where you left off. If you can fade the heat then you can make big scores. If you can't then you will lose the money back and more.

All the BS on here about once the set's done it is a new game and whatever doesn't work in the real world. In the real world if you play a guy and make a good score then you are expected to give him a rematch for the same amount or more. If you don't then everyone knows you are a nit who plays on short money throwing toothpicks at lumberyards.

I hear you. I used to have a regular customer in Hollywood Florida. We even had a regular date, like every Wednesday at 4pm. I won about $1800 from him and he paid off every time, gentleman all the way, even with the gun visible in the holster. One day I was late and by the time I got there he was playing someone else and that was it.

One day I asked what he did and was told by one of the other guys that he is(was) a bookie.

The only guys I didn't like playing were the tush hog dealers who stayed high on their own supply. It was hard to fade the passive/aggressiveness and the fact that every time they went to the bathroom they came out shooting like god.

In Germany there was always decent action for me in most pool rooms but if you wanted to play for hundreds per game then all that money is in the arcades/slot machine joints. And believe me you had to have some gonads to go in and get out of those spots. But if you acted right then you could make friends and were welcome. Act like an ass and they wouldn't hesitate to let you know you were not welcome and should safely leave. And if you snapped off a good score then you had better be ready to play that high again with WHOEVER they brought to the table the next time you came in the door.

Oh I get it, and action like that has me in it for the long haul. I'm scoring as much as I can. But you and I both know that once one quits, there is not a guarantee that the game will be the same or even another game at all. "Them F^*cking casinos."

It does wear on the working stiff if you are gambling against what feels like an unlimited bankroll.

These are the people I always wanted to play. I have sure never looked at it like I was a underdog because the other player seemed to have a unlimited amount of money. I looked at it like I hit the lottery and it always made me play better. I traveled over 1000 miles to play someone like that back when I could play.

Sure and it goes the other way too. If someone beats me out a nice chunk then I don't want to start off slow when we play again. If they give me any of that nonsense then I make them empty their pockets and say whatever you have is what you can win from me and no more.

Or I simply say no thanks and don't ever give them any shot at my money again.

This does remind me of another funny Buddy Hall story from his book.

Buddy gives Louie Roberts the seven and busts him. Louie goes out and plays champions giving up weight and goes back to try Buddy again and asks for the 7 again. Buddy gives it up again and busts Louie again. Third time same thing with Louie calling ahead to confirm that he can still get the seven. Buddy says, I could never figure out why he thought I wouldn't give him the same game he already lost at.

Yeah right, lol, Buddy must have been nuts to keep giving him that.

I would venture to say that one huge difference between you and me is that you probably play at a much higher level. I mean I have made my share of scores but almost none of them were nutted up locks. I think guys like to play me because I am very beatable and (would) bet it up and I could crack on them and with them everybody having a good time.

I was what real players call a through-ticket meaning that when I stepped in the pool room everything was in play, I held nothing back, but I did learn to at least fill up the tank BEFORE gambling.

Yeah right, lol, Buddy must have been nuts to keep giving him that.

Why? The whole point of the story was that if Buddy didn't lose giving up the seven then why not keep giving it as long as he is still winning? Louie could not believe he could get the seven and lose to anyone. So how nitty would it have been if Buddy wins then pulls up and says no, you don't get the seven next time?
