I would have to agree with you, but possibly on a little bit of a different level. It would become a symbol of a memory of the event, experience and a level of personal respect and courtesy for Ronnie I suppose. It would be a souvenir for sure.

Wall hangers have a little better chance of sticking around than trophies but none of them last long. A few years after I was married my wife asked if she could get rid of my trophies, she was tired of dusting around them. I told her sure, they were just saved to put up at a business that never came to be.
Most trophies were given away at the event, often to a friend's child or a child in the crowd that was a complete stranger. The trophies would mean more to them than me. I was still annoyed that I spent thousands building a car and then the NHRA had a huge rule shake up and I found my car in an amateur trophy class. Trophies didn't build the car, I didn't want to run for chrome. I had trophies for horses, cars, pool, pistols, a handful of things forgotten now. Every few years I threw them all away when I couldn't find people that wanted to change the winners information on them and give them away again.
I spent over a year building a brand new car. A yo-yo tried to go between it and the wall the first night out when I was pulling off the track. Upside down and I ruined two factory experimental Firestone tires from Gene Snow besides the car needing a complete new body. Not a happy camper. The track sent word that they had a two dollar rollover trophy for me. Naah!
A friend was in a bass club. One of the members did the 3-D mounts. These include some underwater plants, driftwood, they are art. Some of these to put around your men's room would be nice. These were nice trophies, they had a nice cash value too.
The major knock on the plaques in this thread, they aren't only plaques, they are tacky looking plaques. A nice plaque might stand a better chance of hanging around but only if it is classy and classy looking.
I have known people with trophy rooms that had over 500 first place trophies in them. I suppose there are memories attached to many of them, however I suspect that they don't even remember winning quite a few of them too.

Ok, so its HUGE , but most of it is glass. I have mixed feelings about it. Not so much the trophy, but the memory of how it was won.
I take nothing away from Ronnie O'Sullivan ,but I find his publicly giving away his 2nd place trophies a bit smug. Why not give them away quietly to a terminal Cancer patient, or perhaps to someone permanently disabled that couldn't dream of such an accomplishment?
It's all trophies apparently not just 2nd place. The one in the pic I posted was for winning the event. The past 1st place trophies for the same event are what he was speaking of. Not sure why you find his actions smug. Waging a judgmental finger at the randomness at which he does choose to hand out those trophies is nothing but self righteousness imo
Wow...Gene Snow. Hadn't heard that name in more than a few years. I used to follow him and his Dodge Dart funny car "Rambunctious" a lot at our closest strip (Green Valley Raceway) back in the late 60's/early 70's. I have a few pictures I took of his car and an 8"x10" black-and-white souvenir pic. Brings back good memories.
Weird thing about the black-and-white picture is that it was taken from the pit side while the car was on the starting line, and you can see me on the other side of the track behind the fence holding my camera up taking my own picture.

I did not know it was all trophies, I have not been shadowing his career these last years. My memory is of when he took 2nd place in a snooker match,(I believe it was his 1st loss to JT). He had the trophy no more than 5 minutes, and on his way to the exit interview, he just gave it to some woman on the way.
Lets take a step back for a moment.....leave the trophy and Ronnie aside for now.

What do the promoters of the event think?
Sponsors? What do they think?
How about those in paid attendance?
How about KIDS learning the sport?
Should those who promote the event just shake their(winners) hand and give them a big cardboard check??
How about all the players the winner beat who put in tireless hours of practice?
What would happen if someone or a team would give away the Lombardi trophy, the Stanley Cup, or the Heisman? How about throwing the jacket won in the Masters into the crowd 5 minutes after you adorned it?
Don't get me wrong; I love Ronnie, and think he is Legend,........ BUT.
Everybody looks at trophies differently. Maybe Ronnie feels like it is giving back to the fans who support him and the other players.

You are correct. But what is a trophy? It is a symbol that represents the achievement. That little green Jackie thing isn't pretty, that's one thing that makes it cool and unique. It represents the "brand" of the tournament, just as does a World Series trophy or the Stanley cup. It doesn't have to be expensive to have value, but when it unique, difficult to achieve, manufacture or produce it stands out a little more. The APA-ish plaque doesn't differentiate itself from anything on the market. I mean anyone can go buy an ugly green jacket and wear it in public. Few do, so that makes it special. Does that explain it better?
Exactly although the jacket may not be that pretty everyone knows what it represents. Same as if a player see a trophy with Turning stone champion on it they may not be that impressed with the trophy but they know what it represents
