Anybody know why Mike Lebron is always sitting at a VIP table at Mohegan's Challenge of Champions?

People either know him as the oldest US Open winner, or his role as victor in the defrauding of Vegas, neither of which would seem to result in a continued presence in pool.

Is he the 'inventor' of the Challenge?

iAl diablo con ellos, mi colega coquí!

No he didn't invent it, much of the credit for that belongs to Matt Braun I believe. Mike did however win the First Challenge of Champions in 1991 defeating Buddy in the finals.

you want diablos, i'll give you diablos.

best,

My keyboard doesn't have an upside down exclamation point. :(

He's connected

Mike has a connection with some of the players that usually play in that event. I know that whenever Efren or Busty flew into central Florida for an event, it was Mike that called to arrange for transportation from the airport to the event site.

That connection goes way back. I remember around 1985 Efren being with him on the road and Lebron seemed to be the stake horse or at least more the casually involved.

Maybe because he is Mike Lebron.

Please elaborate?

"People either know him as the oldest US Open winner, or his role as victor in the defrauding of Vegas, neither of which would seem to result in a continued presence in pool."

I always liked this man as a pool player,i happen to see MR LEBRON at last years dcc, this was the first time i have ever spoken to the man,so we start a conversation and MR LEBRON starts to tell me about his latest health condition how he was doing fine after a very big operation he had on his brain and that he was starting to see better and feel better,i just hope the best for the man he was so easy to talk to and very polite and didnt mind talking to a nobody(me),from that little conversation we had he made me feel like i knew him forever,i enjoyed my time with a true pool champion and legend of all time!thank you for your time MR LEBRON!

Gave pool a black eye and got rewarded

The challenge of champions he won was the first and last time legalized odds makers will get involved with pool in Las Vagas. IMO rates up there with the black sox and the new york point shaving scandal. Set the game back years.

Really , winning the U.S. Open isn't significant ? Weren't there other high profile players involved in the COC deal ? Las Vegas is kind of synonymous with crooked dealing . Advantage game players use to get run out of casinos all the time. Maybe he was pressured into doing something he didn't want to do ,maybe not .

i love this post, but i really think it is more like decades. i mean can u imagine how much more interest there could possibly be in pool if the events were up on those big boards.

everyone talks about this seemingly everyday on here. but this really was one of the key moments when pool players really shot themselves (and all us too) in the foot. this is like nixon for me..... something that will NEVER go away. they looked for the short term gain and really behaved disgracefully. i will say, this obviously wasnt lebron's doing alone. i have never seen buddy hall scratch one rail into a side on a hanger position shot like that, a must see.

My wording was that his winning the US Open did not suggest a '... continued presence'.
