Letter from Mr. Mosconi

I have this letter that should be on display. Read the message to induct Cowboy Jimmy Moore into the BCA Hall of fame. I have played pool in many places, I was a member of the BCA. Now at my age I must let go of many of my memories including playing Mr. Cowboy Jimmy Moore at Doc & Eddies and other pool halls in Albuquerque. I was able to talk to Mr. Mosconi personally regarding this request. "Quite the gentleman!" The envelope is addressed to me, I asked that the letter be directed to the BCA. This will be a short time offer prior to me taking it to auction or a dealer of antiquities. I think it belongs in a special place on display for all players to see. Perhaps at some of the tournaments. I will check back in a few days to see if there are any replies to this post. Or perhaps you could get in touch with AZBilliards and they may contact me direct. My information should be on file with them. Thank You. Ken

This is awesome. I only wish there was a billiard Museum in the us because that would be where your letter belongs for all to enjoy.

nice letter. willie signed many things so his signature isn't overly valuable. my guess your letter is worth 500 to 800 for the right interested person to buy.

If not, I think it would be most valuable for obvious reasons to a grandchild or great grandchild of Jimmy Moore’s that has an interest / appreciation of his accomplishments.

I suggest you try to reach out to Denny Glenn, who has the world's largest collection of such memorabilia.

I have this letter that should be on display . . . . . .
I've tweaked your attachment -- purely to enhance its readability in this thread. Obviously the original should remain totally unaltered to preserve its true historicity (and highest value). And many thanks for bringing it to public attention.

Great letter! That is high praise coming from Willie, since he was not quick to praise any of his opponents. I knew Jimmy quite well (even got arrested with him once! :)) and he was one of the most even tempered and soft spoken men I ever met in a poolroom. He would smile and compliment his opponent on their good shots (sincerely too), knowing full well they wouldn't beat him. He had the smoothest, effortless stroke you ever saw, and still could move the cue ball all around the table with precision. Probably the best Ten Ball player (mostly all Ring games) of his era too. Jimmy got saddled with a rep for being a bridesmaid since he finished second in several World Championships. Not too shabby considering who his opposition consisted of.

One more thing about Jimmy. He may have been the best octogenarian pool player of all time as well. At least until Ray Martin eclipses him. Jimmy could still runs 100's in Straight Pool when he was well into his 80's, and he played in several Hard Times tournaments at that age and got fairly deep into the money, and these were against strong fields of players!

It's funny you say that.
That was my idea in 1996 when Fat's died in Dowell IL.
I was at their house before, right next to a corn field, included the dog pen he built to save/house/help strays.
The BCA (coffers were full, over 3 mil in the bank at that time and the trade show was a rollin'.
They could of purchased the entire property/pool table for 50K. The BCA office could of taken all their memorabilia and make the Wanderone Home a billiard museum.....
In IL close to Brunswick billiards and bowling.

I like the idea of a US pool/billiard museum but not in the middle of nowhere like Dowell. It would need to be in a fairly large town/city with decent hotels and places to eat. Dowell is not far from being a ghost-town these days. Pop. is all of 400.

all museums need donations or entry fees to pay expenses which are high. not likely they could get enough from pool sponsors or the general public.

Aside from anything else this shows a side of Willie Mosconi he isn't noted for. He could be less than generous when speaking about his competitors. Nice to see this side of Willie. Jimmy well deserved the accolades, a pleasure to see Willie giving them!
