I've googled many billiards related questions and most of the best
answers have come from this forum, so I figured I'd join:)

My name is Mike Woods. 28 years old, from Kansas City, MO. My best friend turned me
onto pool when I was 18 and I've been hooked ever since. I frequent Raytown recreation pool hall in Raytown, MO, one of the best pool halls in the midwest, it's a bit of a drive
from where I live now but I try to go once a week when I can. most of the time I play on bar tables which are everywhere in my immediate area, but I prefer 9 footers with the good cloth, like RayRec keeps up.

I've spent most of my time playing 9 ball, but am starting to get more interested in
14.1, 10-ball and 1-pocket. I'm a novice at them (Who am I kidding, I'm a novice at 8 and 9 ball too), but trying to get good, while also trying to get my pool-playing friends to venture out of their 8 and 9 ball zones to give them a try.

My cues are a Joss JOS206 with an everest tip for play and a Viking break cue, both
kept in a very nice Porper 2x2 case, which has held up beautifully for as long as I've had it.

Very excited to participate in the Forum!
Mike

Welcome Mike !...This is a great forum to help get you further along with your game !..Lots of different outlooks, and some very good instructors who share some excellent free videos !.. Good to see you have an interest in learning one pocket, on the 9 footers..I think its the best game on a pool table !...Starting out, I would advise you to play all games, and compete with better players as much as possible... It will make the learning curve go much quicker...Good Luck !

Whenever I came in I always played on that tenfooter they have there. Welcome to the forums...

Big Bertha, you know it has some prestige when you have a name for that 10 foot table.
I love Raytown Rec! Well worth the drive for myself. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the real Az. After you get the feel of the place since you are posting you might even become a Gold Member.

Well, well, well. Your very first post. And, a pretty good one, I might add. I hope you enjoy your stay here, there's lots to see and do.
Be sure and sign up for the field trip scheduled for the fourteenth of this month. Mr. Howerton is going to be taking us out to the Alamogordo bombing and gunnery range in New Mexico, to see where the first atomic bomb was tested. It should be a real blast.
Two things to be aware of: Don't pay any attention to promoters of CTE, and watch out for instructors and tip salesmen. :)

Welcome Mike. Just remember there is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid people who ask questions! :D

J/K, on a more serious note welcome...there is some good information on this site if you are able to weed out the bad info!

What Dick said! Welcome to the forum, keep in mind you have to take some of the stuff you'll read here with a grain of salt. If you stick it out you'll be able to tell the chaff from the wheat. LOL!

Welcome to AZ.

I feel your pain re: convincing friends to play games other than 8- and 9-ball. My best result came from bargaining with them: "Okay, let's play an 8-ball race to five, and then we'll play a couple of one-pocket games."

Mike -

Dick is exactly right. I play all games but find myself only wanting to play (and watch) one pocket.

This is a good general billiard site, but there are a couple more that you might want to check out as well.

One Pocket . Org
JimboArmy

Like all things they have good and bad, and I visit all of them.

Best of rolls,

Ken

14.1 seems to be the toughest to explain.. "You mean I can shoot any ball on the table? That's easy!", then I start trying to point out key balls and potential break balls to leave alone and they think I'm screwing with them so that I can win, completely ignore me, and then screw both themselves and I over by pocketing the key and break ball.:banghead:

Sure, it's not that hard to run 14 balls, but what are you gonna do after that?

Welcome to the forum. Glad to see another new member posting. Also, if you're a 14.1 fan be sure to check out the 14.1 sub forum. Some good info and posters over there. I introduced a lot of my friends to straight pool, and they may have been apprehensive at first but they all really like the game now. Start out with shorter games to 50, and there are score keeping apps out there that will even track your balls per inning and high runs.

Play there alot

I am there almost eveyday during the day that im not at work...playing one hole on bertha....Let me know when you go and we can definitely play some one hole if you like

Kyle

Welcome aboard. I think it is best to think of this place as a large virtual pool room. You will find folks of all types to engage in.
