Hi there everyone. I've been visiting this forum and reading posts for like the past year and a half, but this is my first post here. I'm an Army National Guard soldier deployed to Iraq. I was hoping that maybe I could come home to a new pool cue when I get home next year. I was looking at getting another McD, but seeing that there's so many cue makers around here with good prices I'd see about getting a custom. I've got a couple ideas in mind, but I'm not the most creative person in the world. I wasn't looking to go too fancy, I want to spend around $600. PM me if you'd like to help. Thanks a lot.

anyone can handle it im sure. i would recommend bryan mordt bcm cues or ryan rat cues.

great work for the money!!!!!! youll get something nice and may not even spend 600$

If i was looking to buy a cue right now today, I would jump all over One of them BCM cues this second. 325.00! and spend the other on a good break cue.
Don't wait... (if they are still available) http://bcmcue.com/offerings/cues-for-sale/
I can honestly say i doubt you'll do any better for 325.00 on earth.

Just re-read your post, sorry. If you are going to have someone build you a cue, spend more then 600 if your going to wait a year.
I would still Go BCM for a great playing cue at a great price. If it where me, and i didn't jump all over that steal at 325.00,
I would tell him your in Iraq, ask tell him to build you a Gem @ 1000.00 (his pick on style). I have a feeling you'll get more then your moneys worth with him at that price.

That does sound like a good idea, because this is going to be like my commemorative getting out of the Army cue (third trip to the shit box, I've had enough).

i love bryans work. its a no brainer between taking a bath on a mcdermott or getting a nice custom that you can always get your $$$ back or more with a bcm.

thats just from an investment standpoint. not to mention the prob play way better anyway

bcm's cored olivewood cues are the freakin nuts!!!!!!

My $.02

First off, THANK YOU for your service and come home safely!!

Second,
In that price range I think it's worth checking out Leon Sly.
Absolutely stunning cues that perform exceptionally well......and one hell of a nice guy to deal with.

Take good care.

3 trips, i salute ya!
Maybe a ebony forearm 4 pointer,
with bloodwood veneers like this

blood wood (red as he can get)
ebony
blood wood
ebony.

Then do the ring work in small boxs like this
bloodwood
ebony
ivory
with a thin silver ring on top and bottom to set it off.

Just for a bit of fun, i would add a blue dot of turquoise on each shaft. (very very small) so that way, when people ask what is that tiny tourquise dot on your shaft for? You can tell them so i have the red, white, and blue on my cue. ;)

Good luck and God bless.

Wow so many quick responses, and a lot of good work to look at. I'll probably take swami's advice and up my price range to 1000 since it is going to take a while anyway. I was trying to think of ways to make it commemorate all my trips to the sand box. I was thinking maybe somehow incorporate the Iraqi Campaign Medal ribbon colors in there somewhere maybe.

Ryan is very creative.
I have 2 of Leon Sly's cues so I can vouch for him.
Fantastic players, reasonably priced and a great guy to deal with.

from what i remember the army bases in afghanistan had a few pool tables. any tables near you?

Well actually I haven't quite gotten there yet. I guess I did say I was "in" Iraq. I'll actually be there like really soon. The last time I was there I did convoy escorts so I went all over the place, and most bases had tables, but only a few had anything worth playing on. I've seen pictures of the base I'm headed to, and there is a pool table, I guess I'll comment on the condition when I get there. I'll have my McD with me, I took it with last time. Actually last time was when I really started to play a lot. I had a table in my house most of my life, and my dad owned a bar, but I didn't really play that much pool until I was deployed. We did our missions from Kuwait and then do security for the supply convoys. So I basically drove from Kuwait just about everywhere in Iraq. There was this Kuwaiti guy on the base we were at in Kuwait(which had a decent table) that was an awesome shooter, and I used to play with him all the time. Hopefully I have as much time to play as I did last time.

new cue

Maybe something there will interest you. I would be honored to build a cue for a veteran when he returns. We can work out a deal without either of us being hurt. Come home safe and sound. I'll be around.

In that price range I would have to add Bob Dzuricky to the list of potentials.

Here is my review of the cue he made for me.
DZ Cue Review

You really cant go wrong with Bob.

Josh

Bob is one of the most under-rated builders in the industry. Any one who is disappointed with his work just can't be pleased in IMO. He builds as good if not better than most of the well known builders on this forum but he is not well known as he is never out there blowing his own horn. When he gives advice on cue building it should be heeded as it is never just B/S from some one trying to impress buyers. His quality and workmanship certainly exceed his prices.

I would take a look at Cory Barnhart ... With 1000 I think you'd be able to get a pretty nice cue built. Bamacues, a member on this forum, knows Cory personally. I would PM him and negotiate on the price. I'm inclined to believe that you'd probably get a discount for your service to the country. If you like specific colors, get Cory to use a "John Davis Blank" with veneer colors that match what you want. That way you get a real nice full splice player that also looks amazing. From what I know, a Davis blank runs about 400, Cory usually wants about 500 to put it on the lathe and everything, so with the extra 100 you get your shaft.

The reason I suggested a Davis blank is because his blanks are true full splices, and he's been making them for years. He worked with the famous Burton Spain till Spain died, and also, from what I have read supplied blanks to George Balabushka to use.
