Lori Shampo

To EVERYBODY who is giving Neil crap about his post...

I say to you WTF? Neil just commented that he had played Lori ONCE, many years ago, and didn't think she played well. Okay, so what? Was Lori playing "on the lemon", trying for a bigger bet? Who knows, and who cares? It is obvious from many who knew her pretty well, that she played high stakes pool, and won a lot of the time. Okay...props to her on that front!

On the other hand, Neil is far from an average player, and someone (like myself) who always tries to play his best, and someone who goes out of their way to help others. I have never in my life played on the lemon...I suspect Neil is in this same group. How about let's all lighten up here, and consider all the good things Neil has contributed on this forum...for many years now!

As usual, Scott's aim is dead-on. Tap, tap, tap.

Actually Julie Jay sent this information on Lori to me. Julie was a regular on the pro pool scene in the 80's, traveling with Chris MacDonald. They crisscrossed the country in his camper/pick-up truck. Chris was a pretty self reliant guy, able to live off the land. He made his own "flys" and caught fresh fish for dinner whenever he wanted some. He could hunt as well, and had some nice firearms. Plus he was a damn good pool player! Still can dab it a little.

Chris had a key role in the little known but well made movie Chalk. It was a semi realistic look at the life of a pool player/hustler. Julie was the darling of the pool players back then, a well built little hippie girl who had tons of personality. She had the coolest wardrobe, all bought from thrift stores. We used to all (Earl, David, me and Chris, plus various others), sit around the room late at night smoking a doobie and telling stories about all the funny going's on in the pool world. I miss those days, but today is another day and I'm lucky to have it.

OK, Jay, Now you have me reminiscing. Here's some pics from some of those old sessions you talked about. Julie Jay is on the left in the first 2 pictures. She and Chris were close friends of mine and often stayed with me when they were in the vicinity. It was nice to get out of that camper. Do you remember "Willie, the road dog"? If you talk to Julie, tell her I said HI! I haven't seen or talked to her since she and Chris parted ways.

If he would have just said I played her but wasn't that impressed & left it at that then I would agree with you...But his total lack of respect for the dead..Even comparing it to Tony Chohan deal because of some of her choices that has nothing to do with how she died then just shows how shallow he really is..Personally I could care less how many drugs she took before she caught her disease..Hopefully she got right with God before she dies & is @ peace now..Some people walk around with this holier than thou attitude & think they are better than the rest...All I know is that it's not my place to be judge & executioner & don't think it's his right or place either.

Wow. Yeah, thanks a bunch for not judging me. I just love how you try and claim the "high road" about not judging, and how wrong I am for supposedly doing it. Yet, you just had to chime in just to judge me.

Just curious, did you even watch the clips of her and what she went through? And, then did you notice what she did with all that help? She spat on it, and went right back to her old ways. I guess in your eyes, because she died from a disease, all that is supposed to be forgotten about. Hopefully, she did get right with God again before she died. None of us will know until we die.

There is a big lesson to be learned from her story. First, how God WILL help those that truly ask Him. Second, don't think that once God starts fixing things for you, that you can just turn your back on everything He has done for you.

Now, in my opinion, the one that started crapping up this thread was Rita. She just couldn't pass up another opportunity to try and diss me. She could have just said something else, but she had to try and make it look as bad as she could, wrecking the thread, and the whole time trying to blame me. Then, a bunch of you have to jump on the bandwagon and aren't smart enough to read what was really said. You just saw a chance to take sides, and did so.

OMG Sherm, Those pictures are priceless! Louie, Jimmy, Earl, David, Chris, Julie, Gary, Mataya and I guess that's you.

You've got the whole crew there, except for me. :frown: I hung with these guys for years and we had a blast, even though I was usually the TD. I want one of those photos with Louie and Jimmy Reid PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! My one big regret is that we rarely took photos in those days. And send me an extra one for Julie. She's up in Oregon now, the hippy housewife and mother of two teenagers. Fifty something and still looking good!

P.S. I'll gladly pay for them. That is one arsenal of pool talent. We had fun in those days. Earl was one funny motherf-cker before he went haywire on us.

I've always had a peave/thing about trying to protect those who can't protect themselves...whether it be a bully or what not...A dead person can't defend their self...When a person dies that doesnt automatically make them a saint but it's also not a free pass for others to dump on them either...Let sleeping dogs lie & have a basic human respect for the dead.

Jay,

I find it amazing that we didn't become friends 25-30 years ago. We have so many friends in common and other things as well. Your time in the Ohio area, the Philippines ( I've loved the Philippines since I first went there in the

Navy circa 1970, and more recently, I made a couple of trips over there and married a Filipina.) We both owned a couple of pool rooms. I'd always knew _of_ you, as a tournament director and player and heard people in our

group of friends mention you, but I seldom made it to the west coast and when we were at the same tournaments, we were both busy in our own ways. It's funny that we are now becoming friends, primarily thanks to AZ

Billiards. We need to get together some time and just have a good old story session. As far as the pictures go, I only have the originals, I always gave Gary the second prints I'd get made, but you can right click on these and

save them to your computer, copy them to a disc and take them to any photo shop and get prints made. Also I could only post 5 pics and didn't want to totally hijack the thread by making multiple posts to upload more, but if

you send me your email address, I'll send you a bunch more pics I have from back in the day. If you don't know how to download the pics and copy them to a disc, let me know and send me your snail mail address and I'll burn

them to a disc and send them to you. Send me your address to my email, sherm@shermcue.com so you don't have to go public with it and include your phone number if you don't mind. If you have Julie's email

address, please send that as well. I'd like to say hi to her also. Besides being "smoking hot" she was a really nice person who I felt a certain kinship to. I don't know if you were aware that she was an actress and had a few small

parts in mostly horror movies before she gave it all up to go on the road with Chris. She told me she had a "scream" that the movie people liked. I always suspected it was the rack! lol

Thanks so much Sherm! I REALLY do appreciate it. Just e-mail them to jayhelfert@yahoo.com. It ain't no secret! My office phone is (310)370-3994. Also no secret, it's listed! I have a baby girl in the PI, but I'm not married to her mom. Not gonna be either! I do take good care of my little girl though.

I'll forward the photos on to Julie with your e-mail address attached. She was in Poison Ivy with Drew Barrymore. She could have gone further with her acting but she married a guy with a ranch in Oregon and disappeared for over ten years (and two kids).

You're right, it was at the Maverick Club. I was riding herd on Keith back then.
He finished second that year or it was the next year! Keith and Lori were good buddies. Neither one would back down from any game. Lori is the only woman I know of who would play $500-1,000 9-Ball! I doubt she would be trying too hard for ten or twenty bucks. She would be in her stall speed.

Great thread and Lori had an aggressive 'A' game for sure. I did enjoy watching her play. That quote was funny but (not that it matters) I don't think it happened at the Clyde tourney. I think I have seen most all the greats play except for Jean in the last 29 years and I was at every Clyde tourney and I am pretty sure she never played in one.

Its no secret neil

I have a problem with the way you treat people and your approach to many things. I've never dissed you as you call it but I have called you out and usually in private messages when I had problems with you. When was the last time I talked to you? Long ago because again, you had to chime in and state something so negative and you had no real idea but had an opinion as you always do.
Lori spat on God? Really? Did you know her? She tried hard as hell to stay away from that crap and raise her baby and people around pool were a holes putting drugs in front of her to try get her to play to make them money. She had problems but that certainly didnt make her a bad person it made her a person with problems that tried again and again and never gave up trying. Thats sick fro you to say it. I didnt dirty any thread. This was a memorial to lori not you, not about how you felt she didnt play great. Its fine for you to feel that way but again, it doesnt belong ina thread where its about the talent many knew she had. Why didnt you just leave it out? Ive known you for many years and for many years youve been a know it all or attempted to be. Youre known as the biggest complainer in West Michigan and most people cant take being around you. Now Im sorry youre negative. Im sorry you cant stop. Im sorry we cant get along because of it but its the truth period. If you can get along in a forum good for you but for those that know you better than most, its very difficult to handle too much of you. You have a very poor outlook on everything and yes Neil, you do feel like youre a champion of sorts, ask anyone in Grand Rapids how you boast about being in a class with huey and just barely under Jason Kirkwood my God. I left this alone and was trying to force myself not to respond but you and your spitting on God comment and me dirtying up this thread is a joke. Go find someone to play pool with an complain that the ball rolls off when you miss again. Leave me out of you dillusions and your anger at life.

To Scott Lee.............many felt the comment was unnecessary and its because it was. Its better not to say anything, at least thats what I learned growing up. It shouldve been left out otherwise, why post it? What was the purpose when it was about how great of a female player she was? If you knew Neil like Grand Rapids knows Neil, I suppose you would understand. I'll leave it at that.

Neil, leave me out of your problems with life. I dont diss you or even talk to you and dont care to. We have different lives and have no need to contact each other. The only time I speak to you is if you say something untrue or so negative its inappropriate and only if its about people I know and or care about. I dont talk trash on here heck I rarely say anything. Try for once to refrain from posting when you hear that little voice in your head saying you know neil, maybe this is one I shouldnt try to drag down.

Wow. Yeah, thanks a bunch for not judging me. I just love how you try and claim the "high road" about not judging, and how wrong I am for supposedly doing it. Yet, you just had to chime in just to judge me.

Wow, Rita. You really do have some serious issues. This thread was long dead, but for your sick pleasure in dissing me, you had to revive it to do exactly what you accused me of doing. Unlike you, I am not going to air the truth about you on here. Anyone that wants to know just needs to ask around. There is a reason you are barred from rooms. Unlike you, I can play a little, and do know what's what around here. You are just a wannabe somebody pool groupie that can't stand the fact that a lot of people think your "boyfriend" is a hack of a mechanic. Which is where our problems came to a head. Remember, I didn't name him on here, YOU DID! So, live with it.

Now, why don't you take your own advice, and quit "ruining" this thread you call a tribute to Lori??

As to the rest of your ramble, because that's all it is, it just goes to show just what kind of person you really are. One that will go behind someones back to say a bunch of nonsense about them, but don't have the guts to say it to their face. As to any name I have around here, yes, I am known by those that don't know me as a whiner. That is due to idiots like you constantly saying it when they don't know me at all. As to my skill level, that speaks for itself, as does yours. But, again, I will state that you don't know jack about skill levels, around here, or anywhere else. And, that's not just my opinion.

Sweet pictures...I'm going to tease Chris M. a bit the next time I see him about the blue suit and bowtie though, lol.

Chris beat R. Martinez to win a local one pocket tourney a month or two ago...his old game isn't always there, but when it is its pretty damn good.

So off base

Barred? Im not barred from any room and never have been.
If you want to air some laundry about a place I held an event at you can do so and ruin their reputation by having the truth told I suppose but thats on your head not mine. Do you even know what youre talking about half of the time or do you just try to pick little pieces of things out of discussions and create gossip? Seriously, its on your head to draw the truth out on those guys thats your choice.

A groupie? Funny. I run tournaments how exactly is that a groupie? Im not a name dropper like you Neil, I dont need to be whats the point.

I responded because I saw your post for the first time because it was sent to me. Im rarely even on Azbilliards anymore. How am I dissing you that still hasnt been answered. It was you that just said I was doing something to pick on you when I said it was inappropriate to post what you did period. It wasnt the time or place to post it. Start a different thread and say it but not in this one.

As far as my boyfriend goes, he is known to do some of the best work in Michigan and because he wouldnt totally rebuild some tables that were on their last breaths, out of his own pocket for your use, you want to make nasty comments.

Be a man and deal with him and his son and your issues with them in person and the way it should be done. The owner asked for something and got it period. if theyre so horrible, why do they have so many people asking them to help repair other peoples work? Even outside of your opinion on how you feel work should be done, did they ever do work for you? Were you involved in the conversation about what the owner wanted done? I didnt think I saw you there. Just please stick to commenting to what you know from first hand knowledge because you experienced it yourself not what someone told you that someone else told them. So elementary school .

Youre a sour person with nothing but spite and nastiness in your heart. Now neil, post what you want. Im done with you until you try to hurt a reputation of someone I know and or care about again.
And please stop picking on my daughter and being nasty to her. Shes a young lady thats never done a thing to you and I dont want her coming to me telling me youre a jerk to her again please.

I've NEVER been nasty to your daughter, but you already now that, don't you. And, for you to go as far as to make a comment like that is slander. Be careful. As to the rest, go to p.m. You aren't helping yourself at all here. Just trying to be vindictive.

When people die, especially friends of yours, you can easily become defensive and angry over things that you normally wouldn't get upset about.

Neil's original post seemed probably hit a hot button with some of Lori's friends but his post didn't seem to be mean-spirited or hurtful, at least not intentionally. I think Neil was stating his opinion about how well, he thought Lori played. He even admitted that maybe Lori game was off at that time.

It's too bad that this thread has gotten into a pissing contest. Lori's life is a sad story but she didn't go through life without making a big impression on a lot of people.

Why don't we just stop all of this garbage talk and think about what Lori would want for us to learn from her life.

Lori, I never knew you but it is apparent that you had a very difficult life. I'm genuinely sorry that you had to suffer so much just to get through this life, although I can see how many people were in love with your game and good looks.

RIP Lori Shampo

She could have just said something else, but she had to try and make it look as bad as she could, wrecking the thread, and the whole time trying to blame me. Then, a bunch of you have to jump on the bandwagon and aren't smart enough to read what was really said. You just saw a chance to take sides, and did so.

Wow now a bunch of us are stupid for agreeing that it wasnt the right place to knock Lori. And I guess were all just blindly folowing Rita in disagreing with your opinion.
Neil I dont think it was the place to say what you did but thats opinion and your entitled to it.But turning around and stating that we are not smart enough to decifer your comments is a bit harsh dont ya think.
