Lori Shampo

Shampoo was a great personality that like many others are now gone.
It was her , Carla and Robin that I remember from the old days.
It was not a woman's world but they stood tall.

Pool seems so shallow now.

Often wish that the Rack, Beanies', The Cotton Palace, Bensingers, Johnson City were all back just like they used to be. It is a space and time that is lost forever and only exists in the minds of the few remaining players that experienced it.

You are no doubt right Bill. But hearing stories and reading books that reference these old halls have painted a picture of what it must of been like for a few of us who never made the show.

I enjoy missing it. Put it down. It's done. It's over.

What a loss. It hits home because a friend of mine just OD'd and died last Sunday.

But at least Neil got the chance to tell us all how GREAT he is!!!

Good job Neil.

Too bad about your friend. As to the other part of your post, some of you just don't get it. At least Richiebalto did. My post had nothing to do with how great I play, because I don't play great. Never have said that I do. Have had some great matches, beat some name players, but lower level guys get to do that now and then.

What I DID say, was that I was not at all impressed with her play. And, why should I be if I could beat her. I could go on about why I was not impressed, but I really don't see the point of explaining anything to people like you or Rita that are so close minded that you will only read what you want to read into it and spin it your way anyways.

I also find it rather strange that just because Lori is a girl she seems to get a pass on her lifestyle. Most seem to want to play the "poor girl" line. Where was all that pity for Tony C. or any of the other guys that did the same stupid stuff?? She made her choices, she was led out of her bad ones, and went right back to the bad choices. And for that, she paid the consequences.

Now before everybody gives Neil a hard time for this post ask yourself - would Lori agree or disagree with what he wrote???

The difference is that Tony is in jail & has a chance hopefully to see the error of his ways & change...If he does he will have the support of the majority out there...As for as Lori goes...It's just bad business to diss a dead person that has no way of defending themselves no matter how right you think you might be...All it does is show what a complete TOOL you are...nothing more...nothing less

The only thing I have said about her, that others, including the videos posted, have not said, is that I beat her and wasn't impressed by her play. Now, if that's supposed to be dissing her, then so be it.

Just take a moment and look at all the previous posts made about top male players that suffered the same fate. Invariably, they were called losers. So, what, Lori should be treated like some kind of saint because she was a girl?? If you feel that way, then I guess you are the tool.

Once again...Someone who can't see the forest thru the tree's....Nobody trying to make her a saint but she didn't die from a overdose..She died of a horrible disease...Do you really have that much lack of respect for the dead....twist it all you want but you will never see me pick on people that can't defend themselves or ones that are no longer around to so if that makes me a tool than i guess i am...Everybody that knew her says she had a high gear."doesn't matter if she was a saint or not"..so maybe she was jut laying it down when ya'll played and you was too big a sucker to realise it at the time...All I' m gonna tell you is you never gonna earn any respect putting down the dead like you doing..it would be on the same line as if you was putting down a mentally challenged person...It just aint right no matter how you slice it.

I never matched up with Lori. Our stakehorses tried to match us up but the Detroit crowd didn't want to play anywhere but in Detroit. My stakehorse & I did not want to play in Detroit. Geri Titcomb offered her place in Cincinnati as a neutral room but that never went anywhere...

Lori & I played each other in tournaments four times. I won 3 times - Lori once - but the score was down to the wire each time. We liked & had a lot of respect for each other - we'd bet lobster dinners on our matches & we both played hard for that lobster!

I always liked Lori...she had a good heart & I always felt "that for the grace of God, go I." She had a tough go of it & died a horrible death. I last talked to her about 6 months before she died. Lori was my friend & I miss her...Mary Kenniston

I played her one time in the mid to late 80's for the cash. All I can say, is that I really wasn't very impressed. I beat her pretty bad, and made shots that she said she had never seen before and afterwards I ended up teaching them to her. I always hear about how great she was, and, maybe she really was. But, I never saw it. ????????????

Ya know, not to start a flame war, but WTF??

Jay starts a thread that's basically a memorial to one of the greatest female players to ever play our sport, and all you do is reply with how much of a superior player you were....

Really poor judgment and total lack of taste, Neil.

I new madelyn from the Rack when I would watch Baby. Palmer and I played straight pool a few time with me usually winning. She hung around a blonde girl who played but not as good as her. I think she became a flight attendant. Alot of people don't know that Madelyn,Larry Miller and Palmer started the Womens professional Pool Association. Also Madelyn's father was a classical musician.

Mary,
It's good to see you here and I hope you'll stick around! We met a good many years ago at The Pocket Billiard Lounge in Binghamton, NY. I think it was about 1978 or so. LOL!

I think all Neil is trying to let you know is that he knows because he is in the know. So if you know what he knows, then you'd know that he's in the know, and you wouldn't have to question what he knows, Lori sucks.........Anything else you need to know

ps... just kiddin :)

Jay Just googled Shampo and got this PDF file from 1987 accu-stats.Very interesting. Some of the little articles on the pages are worth reading as well as seeing all the players names and stats back then.

Actually Julie Jay sent this information on Lori to me. Julie was a regular on the pro pool scene in the 80's, traveling with Chris MacDonald. They crisscrossed the country in his camper/pick-up truck. Chris was a pretty self reliant guy, able to live off the land. He made his own "flys" and caught fresh fish for dinner whenever he wanted some. He could hunt as well, and had some nice firearms. Plus he was a damn good pool player! Still can dab it a little.

Chris had a key role in the little known but well made movie Chalk. It was a semi realistic look at the life of a pool player/hustler. Julie was the darling of the pool players back then, a well built little hippie girl who had tons of personality. She had the coolest wardrobe, all bought from thrift stores. We used to all (Earl, David, me and Chris, plus various others), sit around the room late at night smoking a doobie and telling stories about all the funny going's on in the pool world. I miss those days, but today is another day and I'm lucky to have it.

To EVERYBODY who is giving Neil crap about his post...

I say to you WTF? Neil just commented that he had played Lori ONCE, many years ago, and didn't think she played well. Okay, so what? Was Lori playing "on the lemon", trying for a bigger bet? Who knows, and who cares? It is obvious from many who knew her pretty well, that she played high stakes pool, and won a lot of the time. Okay...props to her on that front!

On the other hand, Neil is far from an average player, and someone (like myself) who always tries to play his best, and someone who goes out of their way to help others. I have never in my life played on the lemon...I suspect Neil is in this same group. How about let's all lighten up here, and consider all the good things Neil has contributed on this forum...for many years now!

I must be reading something different than the majority here too..

Personally, I saw nothing wrong with Neil's post. From my perspective he was not dogging the late Ms. Shampo, it was just stating his perception of her game at the time that they played.

People are so quick to jump on the bandwagon and pick up their stones but I just don't get it. I did not read anything more than that into what Neil wrote. I've never met Neil but can say that the posts that he writes seem to be well written and of good taste.

YMMV
