Loser/Drunk Stroke

I've heard Danny D talk about it more than once during his commentary on tv matches. He downplays the "drunk" part, but it's the same sort of thing. Totally relaxed, nothing to lose.

Ralph Greenleaf, he played his best when sedated.

I'm that way when I play someone really good. I have a 4-7 beer "window" where I'm in the zone. After that...start drinking mineral water or throw in the towel.

Another example is Jocky Wilson in Pro Darts.

Then when that doesn't work what is your back up plan?
In tournament play to you notify the ref you need to go have a few beers before you can play the next match?
Sounds like a bad practice if you ask me.

In all seriousness, the use of any crutch is only good while it works, or you believe it works. It undermines your confidence in your own abilities and breeds fear. I have seen it too many times. You wake up one day and you can't beat anybody and the crutches don't work anymore.

a shot of wild turkey equals 3 beers right? it does work, but like any other aid or acessory it will only take u so far. older folks and people with disabilities have known this for a long time. be it pain meds, alcohol, energy shots, ephedra, greenies, coke, and the list goes on.

I think you meant Looser?
Rather than Loser, which is what I am when I try to play drunk. If you don't believe the effect 1 beer has on you mentally, try playing chess with someone you usually play even after one beer or drink.

You're trying to fix the wrong problem if you ask me. Instead of putting a bandaid on a confidence issue, why not try to come up with a real solution. Find out why you need to "sedate" yourself, is it nerves? Fix the base issue and you will find that you can play better on command and not be a slave to your vices.

4-5 beers quite possibly cost me a tournament last night. I had to settle for 2nd place after running a couple of tables and missing the 8.

It could also be the "fresh air" I had right before the final.

I should have clued in when free beer started showing up on my table, and yup you guessed it the person that sent those my way was the winner of the tournament.

I've heard Danny Diliberto refer to the 'give up stroke' several times during his commentary. Danny says that the hardest stroke to beat is the give up stroke. Is this what you're referring to?

Basically, he talks about a player who is way behind in match. The player pretty much quits trying, loosens up, assumes that he has little or no chance to win, and all of a sudden starts shooting really well.

Beer calms my nerves and probably makes me play a little better during a match. This is true for if I drink up to about 7 or 8 beers. Then my game suffers. When I drink liquor, I can't run 3 balls.

I used to think that a buzz/drinking 'helped'. Sure, it can loosen you up. Heck, you may even shoot great for a bit. But, once you cross the line and start sliding downwards, there's really no way back. I have much more control over my game swings when I'm sober or close to it. After a couple of shots, my game may be doing alright, but it can start a nose-dive that I can't control. If my game falls off while I'm sober, I can refocus and regain my edge pretty quick.

Assuming this post is serious, another thing to consider is just drinking plenty of water. If you read books by authors like by Dr. Robert Haas (Although his stuff may be dated and there is probably better stuff today) It is a good area to investigate. Playing half drunk does not sound like a good plan in the long run.

You will find there are actually real things you can do to improve performance. Not to mention you may just find yourself feeling better overall and getting healthier.

The question is...Do you play better while drinking? Or do you perceive your play as being better? I equate it to the plain Jane at the end of the bar that turns into a supermodel by the end of the night.

I don't believe that...Greenleaf outplayed everyone DESPITE being drunk, not because he was drunk. Big difference. A few pops will lower inhibitions and relax a player to a certain point, making distractions and nerves less of a factor. But getting that chemical balance right throughout a long match or several matches in a tournament is nearly impossible.

Sometimes Greenleaf was so drunk he had to hold onto the table as he moved around between shots. No way that made him better--but imagine how good he'd have been if he'd stayed straight!

Actually, a shot of brown liquor is equal to ONE beer (or one glass of wine)...it just metabolizes/hits your blood stream faster, as that same ounce of alcohol is more concentrated.

A lot of people learned the game while drinking or drunk.

I try not to play when I'm drunk because of the hangover the next day but I do find drinking helps my game a lot.

When you had that 6th beer and you get that blank stare. Well, the blank stare is great because you tend to stare and have more focus on a shot.

Also, when you are drunk, you just shoot the ball with confidence instead of over-analyzing a shot and second guessing yourself.

Once it goes away...it's very hard to get it back. You get a mental fatigue.
