Luther Lassiter grave

You mean what he was, as in accomplishments, etc.
Usually, a persons memorials are directly related to the amount of money they had at the end of it all. Mr. Lassiter, died with eight dollars and change in his pocket, and that was about it.

Yeah I've been there a few times. Just an ordinary headstone. I think Bobby Chamberlain refurbished it a few years ago.

We should pitch in and get him a new one :-). The marker in the pic cost $18 wholesale. Sells for $250-$450 depending on where you live. For about $150.00 he could have nice a base & die that would normally retail for $1000.00 +. My father has been in the business for almost 60 yrs so I have a hookup ; -). Just a thought & no one would be making any money on this.

This is a fantastic idea.
He was a fellow United States coast guard veteran as well.

After reading Hustler Days, I've had the deepest respect for Mr. Lassiter.

I'm 100% behind this and pledge $100 to kick this off.

So, what exactly would he get, a new tombstone/marker, or just an add on to the marker describing his accomplishments?

A complete new stone. One that sits upright, cemetery permitting, some have weird rules. Big enough we/family/whoever could put whatever they wish on it. If we are serious about this, I will talk to my father in the morning and we can get the ball rolling. Again, no one is making any profit here, I'm not asking for any money other than the cost of the stone. Also someone, somehow would need to contact the family, otherwise it's against the law to move the current one. Any ideas about the shape or color of the stone should be shared. Once you move away from Georgia gray though the prices start climbing. Especially the India reds & blacks. I can still get all of this dirt cheap as compared to buying one from a retailer.

Lassiter headstone

I was fortunate enough to participate in placing a headstone on Herman Rambow's unmarked grave.

I would consider it a privilege to be involved. Mr. Bond might be able to assist in determining the inscription.

420madhatter - please keep me posted. You seem to be the right guy for the project.

I think you would need some permission from a family member. Then raising the money will be no problem. It can be crowd funded very easily and it will not need donations as large as yours.

I would also like to see him memorialized with an annual tournament, maybe somewhere close to his home town. I saw him play maybe a few dozen times but as a young pool nut I was, it was like seeing the Beatles for me.

I drove 900 miles just to see him play the first time. My parents had no idea where I was. It was worth it.

OK. very cool. Put me down for a double sawbuck. Maybe see how much you can collect, and then you can get the best/biggest size you can for the money.

What led you to feel respect for him, aside from the fact that he was a top level player? Been a while since I read the book, loaned it out about a decade ago and still awaiting its return...

There is no disrespect intended as I think it is a very admirable idea, but I do think that if someone knows his remaining family, the family should be asked first. This is a burial site, not a hall of fame, they might not want his grave/stone altered or changed for whatever reason.
Very nice thought, hopefully everyone is cool with it and it moves forward.

Yes, this is the first thing that will have to be done.

His entire story was endearing in a tragic heroic way. The lady who he loved and lost and never was comfortable approaching women afterwards, the coast guard enlistment, then the lifetime of pool accomplishments taking down tournaments even with horrible health issues.

The entire final thoughts of that book....
The guy with no professional talent and the best talker (Fats) was the most successful.
The guy who had a wife and family (Jersey red) was the one who never won the big title.
And then the guy (Luther) who was the most dominant and collected the most wins and endless hours on the table, died alone, poor, and without a family.

Any man in this life who is able to put aside all the distractions and just focus on an area of expertise and become the top of that field through sheer work and performance and sacrifice is a real champion.

Luther Lassiter was that type of champion, and I respect him for I could never dedicate my life to the sport.
