Magic Ball Rack protective film???

Well, I finally waited long enough for the price to go down :embarrassed2:, so I purchased a Magic Ball Rack set (two 9/10-ball and one 8-ball/full rack) from Seybert's for $15.

I remember seeing a thread/posts that touched upon the film you have to peel off of the MBR before using it. I did a search and could not find exactly what I was looking for.

FTR, the MBR's I received are a glossy black on the top side (assuming that this is the top side because I can read the logo this way), and a flat black on the bottom side. The instructions for the two 9/10-ball racks say to "remove the protective film from one side of the MBR", while the instructions for the 8-ball/full rack mention absolutely nothing about any protective film although it appears to be identical in every way (except for the shape) of the 9/10-ball racks. I tried lifting a protective film (which may or may not be there) off of one of my 9/10-ball MBR's with cellophane packaging tape with no success.

I remember there being "old style", 2nd generation, and possibly an even newer version. Some posts said that the newest version has no protective film on them. I do not know what "version" of MBR's I have and if they even have a protective film on them. It is confusing to say the least.

Great product, but the instructions are severely lacking. IF there is a protective film on one side of these racks, wouldn't it have been prudent for the instructions to have said if it is the glossy or flat black side that has the film?

Can somebody help me with this before I bugger-up one of my new MBR's?

I haven't found a quick fix for getting it off. Perhaps some scotch tape would work. Supposedly the film is there to protect the product during manufacture. But if that's the case it is no longer needed once they've made it so the only reason I can think of for not taking it off at the factory is because it's a pain in the ass.

IIRC, I think I used a pin to finally get under it enough to peel off. It's easier to unwrap a CD.

Okay thanks, but WHICH side has the film???

I don't remember and I don't have the current version (black) that you have. Try putting a piece of tape on each side and pulling it apart. Maybe it will come off enough to peel it the rest of the way.

The ones that I bought a few months ago had a bluish film on the topside (glossy side). Hard to get off, but noticeable.

I bought the combo pack from Seyberts last week. If there's a film on the 9/10 ball rack I can't get it off. I only tried the side that I can read the writing on, I've tried scotch tape, black tape, duct tape, and even packing tape with no luck. I sure hate to destroy one.

Did your instructions read the same as mine??? i.e. protective film on the 9/10-ball racks but nothing mentioned on the 8-ball/full rack instructions?

Lots of confusion with this products instructions!!!

I have the first generation ones that came clear with a blue protective cover on it. I haven't had one of the black ones, but I would really suggest the manufacturer to put a tab sticking out so we can just lift and peel rather than pick at it, possibly damaging the rack..

Maybe if people stopped buying them for a few months they would get the idea that it's a real pain in the ass. Johnnyt

You dont need to take the protective fime off..., just rack the balls with the shinny side down and play through..., I got a cople of them a long time ago, gace up on removing the film and have had no bad effects.

Rcaks the same plays the same.

Maybe hitting it with a hair dryer for a couple of minutes would loosen the adhesive and make it easier to peel away.

Mine is the same as yours, the lettering on my 8-ball rack does have a bluish tint to it if that means any thing. One good thing is that when they were packaging mine they made a mistake and included 3 9/10 ball racks.

It's easy to tell if it has the film. It shines with a blue tint both my 9/10 and 8 had it I just worked the corner of em till there was somthing to peel back.

I wish people would read the thread before they post. One AZ'er already stated that the new ones don't have the protective film on the black ones. Just put the shiney side down and play on playa! That's how I have always used mine (9/10 and 8) and have never had a problem with it.

r,

Greg

Well then, that's pretty dumb then that the OP's rack came with instructions telling him to remove the protective film if there isn't any.

lol. That's true. The instructions were not updated along with the product is my guess.

Here's the instructions the way I understand them: Use with the shiny side down (which I found odd since that makes the logo read backwards). I also noted that it's best to put the head ball first, then the 2 ball on the very back. Then load up the others and rub them together. Voila!

Great rack though.

Magic ball rack protective film

I just got around to responding to this thread and there seems to be some confusion.

The very newest versions do not have any film. Maniac got his from seyberts and they do not have any of the newest version (yet).

The newest version is the black ones with the CSI and BCAPL logos. They do NOT have a film.

The previous black ones (I have been told) have a film and it is very hard to get it off.

The earlier clear ones had a film that was very easy to remove- use your fingernail at one of the diamond holes and it peels back. Or you can use scotch tape.

All new stock will not have a film

Okay Mark, I still need more information. Obviously, I have a version WITH the protective film (as there are no CSI or BCAPL logos on them). Is the film on the shiny side or the dull side??? And.....what is the best way to remove the film???

Geez!!!

Maniac (what a hassle)

Magic rack film

Maniac;

If there is a film, it is on the side without printing. I have heard it is very difficult to get off the early black ones- but I have not had any.

All new ones do not have film.

It can't be that tough. If you have to, take a knife and scratch through the film so you can grab an edge.

Or- if you cannot tell if it is there, don't worry about it. I don't think it will affect the ball roll at all.

Sorry I could not be more help, but these wre made before I got involved with MBR.
