Magnificent 7

Just saw this on the AZB front page: http://www.azbilliards.com/2000storya.php?storynum=7932

This looks like it could be a pretty neat weekend but I am not familiar with the place they are going to hold it: "Billiards Ink". Can anyone offer up any information on this place? Good food? Noisy juke box? Anything?
Carolina Blue, The pool roon is Billiards ink. It was formerly Table Steaks until a few weeks ago when itchangedhands to a gentleman named Bobby Brown (No not Whitney's Bobby :) )

Its a real nice pool room with plenty of space and a nice cocktail/bar area. The food is awesome from what I tried.

There is a section to the left as you go in that had tables and a sitting area that will be blocked off just for this event. Bobby will do everything in his power to make sure that it is as enjoyable for all concerned as possible.

I know there is a jukebox there but he will either turn it down all around or he will just shut it off in the area we will be in depending what our guests want.

I hope this helps you and just so you know I would not even consider this place unless I thought it would be a great venue for what we are doing. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask. Thanks,

Thank you for the post. Our website is a work in progress but there is a short video that can give you a feel for the place. http://www.billiardsink.com/

As Mark stated, we will do anything we can to make your time here more enjoyable. We are very excited to have this opportunity and look forward to this history filled weekend.

Thanks to Mark Cantrill, this looks like it's going to be fun.

I am honored to be selected as one of chosen ones in the Magnificant Seven.

This will be my inaugural stepping-out event. I've sort of been MIA for a while, and I'm really looking forward to this.

I've dusted the cobwebs off my cue case, and as of today, I'm going to be hitting balls with my Madden cue, gearing up for the big showdown in Colorado.

Earthquake is back. Can't wait. :)

now THAT'S exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Come on back ... this game needs some excitement. Can't think of anymone more capable than Keith

Great news Keith! I really wish I could make the event, if for no other reason to see you play again. You may or may not remember me from back in the day when I staked Gary Spaeth and traveled with him to all of the events. We got together a few times and had a wild ride in Akron once with Ray Shad. He almost got us all killed and barely missed a collision. I still remember you saying "Well, you ran out in that spot"! I've laughed about that many times over the years. Hope you do well in the tourney! Will Jennie be making the trip with you. Hope she can keep us "shut ins" informed!

Ring game at my house for a warm up! Great to see this coming together and very glad to see you involved.

May as well just do a little warmup at the US Open, right? You might just win the thing. :)

Gotta put some pics to this thread of the Magnificent 7!

Aside from Buddy Hall's being known as "The Rifleman," did you know his real first name was Cecil? From the self-proclaimed hometown of Superman, Buddy was born in Metropolis, Illinois.

Buddy Hall was the thirty-ninth inductee in the Billiards Congress of America's Hall of Fame, in the year 2000. He was named Player of the Year by the pool media, to include The National Billiard News and Pool and Billiards Magazine, in 1982, 1991, and 1998. A profile of Hall appeared in The Hustler column of the inaugural issue of The Snap Magazine, a story reputed to have "... in many ways set the tone for the magazine from there on out."

The Magnificent 7 and the US Open

I wonder how many og these "Magnificent 7" plan to play in the US Open this year ? I heard from Jerry Forsyth that Buddy Hall plans to play this year and as of last weekend at the Siminole tournament in New York, Mike Sigal says he is planning on going too. Archer, Varner and Strickland always play. Now if McCready and Mataya show up, it will really be like old times. We need a few more of the old guys like Rempe, David Howard, Danny Madena, Davenport and we can have a real family reunion. I look forward to a old timers year at the good old US Open thisn year.

What can I write that hasn't already been written about Earl Strickland?!

Well, there's the obvious: Strickland is a multiple winner of the prestigious Player of the Year Award, and his career highlights include five wins at the U.S. Open Nine-ball Championships (more than any other professional pool player worldwide), and the WPA World Nine-ball Championships. Strickland is the only WPA World Nine-ball Champion ever to win the event in consecutive years.

When asked about Strickland, Matchroom Sports founder Barry Hearn stated Earl's presence "guarantees drama and unpredictability." I'm sure at this event, Earl's going to be entertaining the crowds and relaying his tournament battles to those in attendance. One on one, Earl's truly is polished just like a gem; thus, that's why he's The Pearl.

JAM, I am loving your pics and credentials info. Thanks,

In 1982, "Pretty Boy Floyd" aka Jimmy Mataya (31) married Ewa Svensson (17) of Sweden forming pool's power couple. With Jimmy's gift of gab and Ewa's beauty, all heads turned when they walked into the room. Though their marriage did not last, the two of them have managed to remain friends over the years.

Jimmy Mataya still makes cameo appearances today at various pool happenings. I cannot imagine what it's going to be like to hear him in the same room with these other great players sharing pool strategies and exchanging road stories. Man, Jimmy's got some road stories, let me tell you!

Read more about Jimmy Mataya on Wikipedia. Picture in Wikipedia article courtesy of Freddy the Beard. You can see why they called him "Pretty Boy." Man, he sure was easy on the eyes, and he's still got that famous smile, to boot.

and what a voice. The year he played in the DCC, he drowned out everybody in the room without a mic!

A lot of folks may not realize that The Kentucky Colonel (Nick Varner) got into the pool scene in 1970 while attending college.

A cliché given to Varner was "speak softly and carry a big stick" because of the way he conducted himself as well as his competitive endeavors. Nick is quiet off the table, but on the table, he can make a lot of noise.

In 1989, Varner became only the second man to earn over $100,000 in prize winnings accumulating 16 major nine-ball events and was "Player of the Year" in 1980 and 1989. Today, he's still got it.

Today's top pool super star, The Scorpion aka Johnny Archer's reign in the pool world is still going strong.

Most people know that Johnny is also an avid golfer. In fact, he ascribes his strong pool break to playing a lot of golf, noting similarities in having the timing right and using one's whole body in the stroke.

A family man who holds onto his religious values strongly, Johnny is a good role model for aspiring players. He manages to juggle family and pool quite nicely.
