Making 14.1 Harder To Make High Runs

I would like to see a match or a tournament playing 14.1 where you have to call the OB and pocket and at the same time call the next ball you are going to shoot. No need to call the pocket on the second ball until before you shoot it. I don’t think even the top players would run 100 very often if ever. Johnnyt

Everyone always wants to change the rules. Leave the rules alone. The game (14.1) is timeless and a sufficient challenge to anyone amateur or pro. Is the goal to make the games so difficult that no one will want to play them?

I not saying change the rules for the game of 14.1. Nevermind, I'll try it myself. Johnnyt

From what I have heard, Michael Eufemia was able to take a full rack of 14.1 with the break shot set up, and then tell you what ball was going into what pocket and the order they would go in before he would take the break shot.. He would have you write it down, and then do it. He couldn't do it every time, of course. But he could do it often enough to blow your mind.

Now, if that story really is true, try and wrap your head around doing that!

I know he was a great 14.1 player but I'd bet him or anyone else $50 a rack for many racks on that. I believe I would be the favorite.

Johnnyt -- I've tried "call next shot" a few times and it's fun. You're right -- it will greatly reduce runs. It's a neat way to handicap a 14.1 game with a significantly better player.

I've played "call next shot" in 8 ball, too.
It's a great exercise regardless of the game.
Drives everybody crazy.

I think we should just completely level the playing field by making a standard size corner pocket. The new pocket size should be 2.125 inches.

Now that would be fun to watch.

I tried it for about 30 min. It does make you focus on pinpoint position. Probably good for practice if you can stand it...I couldn't:(. Johnnyt

would you be allowed to safe if you got bad shape on the next ball? Or are you forced to take a flyer at it?

In practice you can do it any way you want. I'm not sure how it would be in competition. I've done this a few times, albeit years ago. It sure does make you pay more attention to your position play:rolleyes: And, I was not crazy about it!

I have no idea how its played, if its played. Someone told me to try it when I was about 18. Im 70 now and still can't ike it. Johnnyt

Call plus 2

I've done it before in practice and it certainly does make you concentrate on what you should be concentrating on.

We would usually have to call the ball we were shooting and the next two. You could always change your mind when you got up to the next shot.

I'd say the best way to play it is call this ball & pocket, and call next ball. after the shot you can either shoot or play safe on the next ball. works fine for 8 ball, 14.1 and 1 pocket, but 9 ball.. obviously you know which ball you're hitting next unless you're going to carom or combo. I'd say 9 ball you should have to call ball & pocket, then ball & pocket.

I've had a couple of games doing this in 8 ball, the other guy got mad at my sloppy lucky area shape. Our friendly agreement is you take a flyer at it, and kick it if you're hooked. Good practice but hard to play in any serious way.
