Everybody talks about Mosconi's record and you'll hear a million different reasons why it can't be broken, won't be broken, will be broken, ain't worth the effort...etc., etc...etc.

I think Pacquiao may be the answer to reviving interest in pool and he has the resources to do it and makes a lot of money for Filipino players.

I'd like to see Manny set up a table (equivalent to the Mosconi 8' table) and have the Philippine monster players try to beat it.

Some of the MONSTER players in the Philippines earn almost NOTHING compared to wages in the USA. $20,000 to the winner over there would be equivalent to WAY more in our economy. He could afford to stake players FULL-TIME to beat it...around the clock. It would be quite a novelty to see the world record in 14.1 be held by somebody who wasn't KNOWN as a 14.1 player.
 
I don't think anyone should just pay players around the clock.
However, having such a bounty to players could make interesting viewing.
Perhaps a days event, 10 tables, 10 judges / refs and plenty of time (months) to practice before the big event..?
Might see a new record set! :thumbup:

Could do it in the US. Just have players pay XX amount to try and beat it. Maybe handicap it by cost. So pros maybe $20/try. Bangers $1/try. First to beat it wins the cash. Throw $1K in to seed the pot.

Set up a table to the same specs as Mosconi's and let er rip.

Would you set it up to start with a break or start from the same position he did? I'm not too familiar with his run and I don't know how it started.

That's an interesting idea.

The reason though that not many are interested in breaking the record is that Mosconi set it on a big pocket 8-foot table in an exhibition, from what I've heard.

Appleton's record of 200 on a 9-footer is more impressive to me, because it was in a world tournament.

He's supposed to put up the money $20,000 and then PAY players to win it???? Why don't you put the money up and pay the players to win it?

Just an FYI -

At the CSI hi-run competition held in Vegas for 2-3 years, Bob Jewett and Mark Griffin each put up $10,000 to anyone who could beat Mosconi's 526.

It was not even threatened, although Danny Harriman did a nice 199 (?) before a very fluky scratch got him.

$20,000 is NOTHING to Manny...ESPECIALLY in the Philippines. The President of the Philippines makes less than $30,000 a year. How much do you think a pool player makes in a year?

There are tons of good players there who would JUMP at the chance of STEADY employment of doing NOTHING but playing 14.1 for a salary. Have a time limit of a few months and let several players try to be the FIRST to break the record. The winner takes the BONUS of "whatever" is set up for the prize.

Manny could retain the rights to the "video" or whatever comes out of it. I'm sure it would equate to more than what he had invested should somebody break the record.

If nothing else, it would give the PI "bragging rights".

Geez, how about leaving Manny alone already? Yeah, the guy loves pool. Yeah he has money, but it's his money. The guy decides to put his name behind a tournament and because he is famous and wealthy people come out of the woodwork with umpteen other ideas for their pet projects that he should fund. Why, just because?

Should we suggest that people with NO MONEY fund it? That ALWAYS works.

Manny likes "helping" people and he loves pool. He could help BOTH by doing this.

I appreciate your "two cents", but I don't think we can get anybody to try it for that. We'll need a couple more donations to increase the pot. Thank you.

Other than being on an 8 ft table (due to The 10ft tables available not being Brunswick made and Mosconi's contract stipulating he must play on a Brunswick table), I've yet to see anything regarding the specs of the table, at all. Really would love to find some irrefutable evidence of what the specs were at the time.

The video would be worth almost nothing, who's gonna buy it? The people in the Philippines, who by your own statement make almost nothing, or would Manny have to give that away for free too?
People in the US aren't gonna buy it, the vast majority of players in the US (league) won't even watch FREE videos on YouTube.

Lose, lose, lose situation, but then again it's not your money is it?

That's great. Mark G and a few others also work hard at promoting our game, but as they say, No Man is an Island and am sure that any of them don't mind a hand when it comes to a celebrity that has the resources to get behind his words.

Unlike other members, make that one member, that does a lot of talking but as of yet, haven't seen any walk.

This is great stuff. This is the second thing that Manny has got behind in a short while. Hope that he continues with his ideas.
