I was formally introduced to Andy Gilbert last July in Olathe by Will. Ready to buy my next custom cue, I had Andy in mind and once Will put his stamp of approval on it, that was good enough for me. Will suggested I do some drawings on a piece of paper to come up with some kind of design. I sat down and let my creative mind twist the best it could. I knew I wanted Brazilian Rosewood & Ebony. I wanted nice veneers as from what I see that is what Andy really does better than most. Boxes in the butt. Once I had the butt designed, I put my mind to thinking about the rings. It came to me to have it scrimshawed. The next day, I sat down with Andy - showed him my picture and told him about what I wanted to spend. He added a few extras in my design but all in all, he kept the same concept. I had to twist his arm a bit to have the points ebony and rest of the cue the rosewood. I really wanted to see this wood in the cue. I let him pick the veneers and told him I wanted ivory joint and ivory buttcap. I was allowed to have the one joint protector only because I was a friend of Will's.
Anyways, I emailed Andy a few pics of what I wanted scrimshawed but besides that, did not have much conversation with him during the building process. 7 months later and my cue is exactly how I invisioned. Andy truly is a mastercraftsman and I couldn't be happier. I am amazed how he put my chicken scratch and my thoughts into the cue.
Below are many many pictures. If you get tired of looking, oh well.
