Maybe Dime shape tip not right for me anymore

I've played with a dime shaped tip for at least 40 years. A few month ago I bought one of Dale Perry's cues and it came with a nickel tip. I have always used a Viking cue, but at the price I figured I could always sell it or give it to someone for a present if I didn't like it.

When I got it and started playing with it I noticed I was shooting a little better with it over my Viking. It never dawned on me until today that the DP had a nickel tip and not a dime like my Viking. So today I got my Viking back out and shaped it nickel size. It made all the difference in the world. I guess as you get older and are not as flexable as you were when younger you (I) don't hit the spot on the QB I think I'm hitting when streatching for shot or power stroking. Or maybe it's all in my head. Johnnyt

I shoot better with a dime tip but the Moori mediums I have on my shafts flatten out so bad that I either settle for a flatter tip or cut the tips down to nothing in short order insisting on playing with a dime tip.

There is only about .065" difference in a nickel and dime radius, doesn't seem like it would matter but as we agree, it does.

And the contact point between cue tip and ob is not going to change more than a miniscule amount.... if any.

Well I said it could be all in my head. The mind is a very powerful thing...I forget the rest of the statement,(to fry?) I must be losing my mind. Johnnyt

Jim,

The main difference is effective contact angle of the tangent area between the two surfaces I believe and the further away from center the faster the angle of that tangent area changes. It doesn't seem like much difference but it is the difference between balls falling or rattling and coming out the pocket.

I can scuff my tip when balls aren't falling when I have to move the cue ball around a lot and make no change in pocketing accuracy. Reshape the tip to a dime and they will fall for six or eight hours play, maybe longer, but soon I have to reshape again.

I shape mine to a nickel after I get a new tip put on and then I let the chalk shape the tip after that. I saw that advice from Tom Ferry on this site once and it works best for me. Shape it once and leave it alone.

you might run into some problems selling that DP if you decide
