Me and The Ghost

While everyone is sweating the big action in Valley Forge, the Ghost and I are having our own private grudge match for a lordly $40 a game. :wink:

It is really a sociable game of pool with a small bet to keep us both honest. We have played two days this week for about 10-12 hours total. At this point he is exactly one game ahead. And that's a good thing, because on reflection I can't think of anything I do better than him.

OnePocketGhost banks good (he's from Chicago), moves very good and makes very few mistakes. He can run balls too. I feel like I played better today than the first day we played, and I even ran one eight and out. I also felt like most of the time I was swimming up stream. He had me in one predicament after another. How I escaped so many times is a surprise to me.

He may play better on my Diamond than I do. I truly don't feel any home court advantage. Hopefully we'll get one more session in before he leaves. I feel like I'm starting to get in stroke for One Pocket. Thanks for the game Ghosty.

Damn! I was hoping he'd be a little rusty when he got back to town and I might get to keep a little of my lunch money for a change - at least until he got back into stroke.

A word of advice, Jay (that you probably no longer need): never leave him the long bank.

He hits every long bank directly at his pocket. I hate to say it, but he banks better on my table than I do (at One Hole). But we can play some Banks anytime!

Actually I just want to be ready for anyone. I feel like playing a little again for the first time in a long time. I never have much trouble finding games. Why should I? I'm willing to play cheap ($20-100 a game) and I rarely if ever ask for a spot.

What is discouraging is realizing that I will probably never play my best game again. I feel like the Jay of the 70's could give present day Jay about 9-7. I just don't see the balls as well or shoot as straight. And I don't run as many balls. I used to regularly run fives and sixes if I got an open shot. Now it's mostly twos and threes. I still see all the moves, I just don't execute quite as good.

Jay u are a better banker than him.The two times I played you I tested you by leaving the cue in various angles including odd and awkward angles and yet you managed to bank them well.I always like to get testy on the table to assess my opponent.
To really know the speed of a player in one pocket one has to play at least 12-15 times on different days with that player.I met the ghost only for one time at your home and that was not enough to judge every aspect of his game.

I always heard that as a young man but it sure makes sense when it happens. I am just south of 50 and I am chasing what I was on the pool table, I still play about the same speed but in a very different way. Shots are worse but shape is better.:wink:

As you know, just stirring the pot. I strongly suspect that the you and JoeyA grudge match is about as serious as the Williebetmore/Breakup grudge matches of yore.

Vag, you're a good judge of a player's speed. That I know, but after playing 18-20 games of One Hole with The Ghost, I rate him 9-8 over me. Close but still a favorite. I'll still play him though, because it's good for me to test myself.

Jay you are younger than me and in a lot better shape. If I can come back and play "B+" pool again, you can too. The long shots probably won't come back like 20-30 years ago, but the position will be better than when you were younger. You will not get out of position often in fear of having a long shot. Now stop the negative talk and go practice. Johnnyt
