Hey, i was watching Mike D playing Jayson Shaw at snookers and he seems to be using a wrapless curly maple handle and ebony on ebony 6 pointer with southwest rings n style.

Anyone knows what cue butt is that ?
But the shaft is definitely an ob shaft.

It's coco on coco...

Yeah he picked up a SW recently. He has posted pics on Facebook over the past month.

Thanks guys for the response.
Yeah i just saw it on his facebook page, its a curly maple handle and cocobolo on cocobolo 6 pointer. Gorgeous !!
Have been looking for a wrapless southwest like his for awhile.

Thanks

I don't understand why he would use a Predator shaft, when just yesterday he posted a pic of himself wearing an OB shirt.

From his FB page...

"I decided to part ways. They're a great company but I needed a little soul searching when it came down to my cues."

Still a bit cheeky to wear their free sponsored gear ;)

Big Head has always been a little scatter-brained where his equipment s concerned. Casting about trying to find the Unicorn shaft and what-not. I'm no different.

If you're using a predator shaft then what difference does it make if your butt is a Southwest or a Cuetec? Seems like kind of a waste.

I think there are def differences in cue butts from manufacturer to manufacturer that will translate to different feel and feedback.

And like us amateurs, pro players are ever tweaking their equipment in order to achieve what they consider the perfect combos.

lt can become a little more interesting and challenging for pros who have sponsorship deals. For the most part, the sponsors and/or players will customize their equipment to the players liking.

Oh I believe you're correct about the impact of the butt on feel & feedback when using standard maple shafts but with the dead feeling of LD shafts I'm not so sure it makes a difference at all.

Maybe less so but also worth considering, imo, is how much psychology can play into performance in our sport.

For a top pro, no doubt they could all pretty much play off the wall and shoot 99.9% of az members livers out but when they're up against a tourney full of other world beaters, the feeling of having high quality equipment in their hands could provide a mental edge.

I think, as a player, you should find what YOU think makes YOU perform the best. It is YOU shooting, NOT the sponsor. If you shoot WELL ENOUGH with your cue, then the cue maker (or shaft maker) will probably find YOU.

If you shoot with whatever a sponsor decides you should use, it may not be what is best for your game (mentally and physically). Earl could shoot lights out with his Cuetec, but he hated it and claimed it ruined his game. I don't necessarily believe that, but the money must have been good enough to make him "like it a bit".

If the sponsor is giving you sufficient money to endorse them is one thing, but t-shirts and a cue, once in a while, wouldn't be enough to sway me. I can use a cue for years and years and only need tips.

As far as hit and feel, I have a Predator 314-2 FAT shaft that I switch back and forth between my Titlist conversion and my ADAM Japan cue. Both cues are very close in weight and balance and the only difference is the Titlist is full-splice and the ADAM is not. The cues play similarly but you can tell the difference in feel and hit.

1000% correct! I play a Mike Webb LD shaft with a predator BK2 wrapless butt! For the past yr or so,,,, I can't play anything else! I'm afraid to put a new tip on it even!!

For me, I found the absolute nuts for a cue! Webb's LD shaft is absolutely the best! I've tried them all and the Webb surpasses all of them!

This true. I had Lucasi tweak my cue when they sponsored me to play every Saturday at Felt Billiards.
I also did some soul searching (which also included searching my mail box for the Lucasi check over and over)and made the switch to a non sponsored Troy Downey cue.

How about $100K salary? That was before he even hit a ball. J-S Sales (Cuetec) also paid all of his entry fees, and if he won a tournament in the US, they MATCHED his winnings. One year when he won the US Open in VA, he got $40K for winning, and another $40K bonus. When Janet Shimel sold out to Imperial, Mike (the owner) brought Earl into his office and FIRED him on the spot. Earl went from making $100K a year to ZERO K a year overnight! Ouch! Sadly it is unlikely that Earl will ever recover from those days.
