Why the stupid man suit?

I was thinking about making some "milk dud" tips and selling them to fellow AZers. I want to get a general consensus on what you all think about this idea. Any input is greatly appreciated.

what difference will the poll make?the only sure test is to try one out for yourself?some will like them some won't?The only qution is do you. I tried 1 and didn't like it,but that's just me I like to experiment, thats how I discovered the cue I 'm so happy with.

I just want to make sure there is enough people that want/need them before I start this venture. I've noticed in the forums that they are kind of in high demand (unless I'm mistaken), I figured another source would be well suited to the needs of the forum.

I know this may sound like a naive question ...

I have heard of and seen pics of the "milk dud" tips supplied with Jensen cues by Mike Johnson, but I am unaware of their composition, and their history. Google searches show that AZer "Yalley" sold some "originals" on the forum last April. Who the heck made those?? How does anyone know if what you are planning to make is the going to be the same composition and display the same characterisitics?

I am just curious about their origin for my knowledge.

I'm not really sure of the origins myself. But my plan was, if there are enough people, to send one tip to maybe 4 or 5 people and have them try the tips out and give some kind of testimonial to them before I actually start selling them.

Mike Johnson of Jensen Cues made them. Great playing tip, and I use it on all my cues.

I 'll also add for people that never played with one, it is a very hard tip, never mushrooms, and has great cue ball control.

About 10 years ago, I heard about "milk duds" from a local player. He had a couple in his bag, one on his player

He claimed that the Filipino's had been using them for years

So, since he originated them...

I should make sure to buy them from him for the originals or someone he says is making them to his specs. That being the case, I would suggest that whoever wants to make milk duds, should get in contact with Mike Johnson and see if he will support them in their effort by sharing his knowedge of how to make them. If he doesn't want to impart that knowedge, then anyone claiming they have made milk duds will be selling something they believe to be similar to milkduds, but not 100% certain they are milk duds.. Correct me if I am wrong.

What I am trying to say.. Cuefreak, is you probably should talk with Mike and see if he might want to help you out. I am sure if there is money to be made, he might support your idea.

I agree that it really depends on how they are made and by who. There are several local players who won't use anything but a milkdud made by a local cuemaker named Adam Franks, who, I have heard, does something a little different. I've also heard of some folks that use a ball bearing when compressing them that makes the center crown harder....I think it may even have been FL himself saying that...not sure I remember. But, I think that you should learn all you can from lots of folks like Johnson and Franks, buy a can of tips, make a batch, give a few away for review locally and on AZ, and take a shot at it. You never know until you try!
:p

That's pretty much what I had in mind. Try and make some, give a few out to people on AZ and see how they like them. They can then testify to the quality and playability. I'm not on here trying to make a huge profit, just wanting to provide a service (if the demand is high enough).

Mild Dud Has Been Turned Into A Generic Term For Any Leather Tip Conditioned In Milk.

Problem Is, Some Are Lepros, Some Are Triangles, Some Are Elkmasters. I'e Seen Several Others Also Treated In The Same Manner.

You'd Need To Be Really Specific Before You Just Started Buying Milk Duds, Or You'll Always Be Getting Different Tips.

I'll post back when I get a few tips ready to try out. I need five people that have played with comparable tips. These five people will have one tip each mailed to them to test out. After the test phase, these people will report back their findings to this thread, and from there, you all can decide if you would be interested in purchasing these tips. Any questions or concerns please feel free to pm me or post here. Thanks.

cue maker down this way makes them also. Never hit with one, hasve no idea what the attraction is. He makes them from triangles and uses milk and LOTS of pressure before glueing them on.

All this talk of milk and leather makes me wonder if someone might not come up with a new tip made out of veal hide, then maybe you won't need so much milk it's already impreganted in the calfskin. Baaaahahah!

Could be a new niche

I say go for it. Worst case there's going to be another type of tip out there for others to try out. I've never tried this type of tip, but myself, like most, will try almost anything once.
