Does anyone know this Keith Thompson guy? Nick Varners father said he was a great player, but quit playing, did not know why.

There was Keith Thompson from St Louis, don't know if it's the same guy.

Keith Thompson won the 1970 Johnston City 9 Ball and All-Around Championships.

He became a professing Christian and entered the full time ministry, quitting pool.

Nick's dad died several years ago. I never knew or met him. Did he play much? Does Nick's brothers play well?

And while I'm beating you with questions, does Nick or his family still own the pool room in Owensboro?

Thanks!

Nick's Dad did not play much pool to my knowledge. I believe he booked sports and eventually opened up the " Rack N Cue " which closed within the last 10 years or so. I'm pretty sure that Nick still owns the billiard supply store that was located in an attached building to the poolroom and is probably where he conducts most of his business with his signature line. Steve, Nick's brother, was not much of a pocket billiards player, but excelled exceptionally at bumper pool. Hope this helps.

Keith's nickname was "Squirrel." He was only 19 yrs old when he beat Ronnie Allen and Wimpy for the all around title (using my cue stick, he didnt own a cue). It was an upset the likes of when the USA beat Russia in Hockey in the Olympics. Ronnie could have played him 10 to 7 in 1pkt. (I know because Keith and I played every day down there) Wimpy could have given him the seven ball for sure, maybe even the six. Wimpy could have played him straight pool 125 to 75 and stole his money. His game became so overrated after that, so he couldnt get a fair game anymore. He returned to Johnston City the next year and couldnt beat nobody. He became disillusioned after that and eventually quit the game.

the Beard

Nicky's father played a nice game of Bumper pool

Keith was from Texas I believe. He was never anything more than a good shortstop. The top players would give him the seven ball. He just got hot at the right moment.

Nick's dad was also an excellent poker player and pretty smart gambler. He and Mr. Cokes made Nicky into a champion.

he liked to play the local guys cheap sets of 9ball and one pocket. sometimes betting 100.00 per game, if he had the nuts. very smart gambler, handicapper, card player, yes very good at bumper pool. sold the poolroom after the old man died. little nick still owns and operates the billiards supply store.
