Jerry Forsyth and the other momo - please quit. Do your stakehorsing but stay away from the commentators box. You guys are atrocious. I say this with all the love in the world. The only person who needs to commentate is Jim Wych and maybe someone else with a clue. I dont want to hear you try to predict the next move or remind me how tight the pockets are or anything else coming out of your yapper.

Ken, you can't ref. Last year you forgot to put the 9 ball in the middle during a Boyes break. This year you call a foul then take it back on Boyes measuring with CB. Then you call foul on Skylar's lag online to take it back. Stay away from the commentators box as well. Your mouth is always unbearably dry.

You guys are not a PLUS to the event.

As far as I'm concerned, Jerry Forsyth is the *best* commentator in the pool world, bar none.

Let's switch it around and state the truth. You, Plennairrider, are not a PLUS to this pool forum. :angry:

I am all for people to be able to express their opinions freely but I think referring to Jerry Forsyth and Jay Helfert as "momos" is not only a little childish, but patently untrue.

You may not have been enamored with their commentary at this event but "momos" they are not.

I wouldn't have enough time today to list all that they have done for our sport.

Possible even more than yourself?

Does this fall under the same category you referred to above, "Sometimes compassion is made of non compassionate parts" :wink:

I completely agree with the initial post regarding Forsyth and Helfert. First off, they both make the mistakes that so many of todays sports announcers make - don't tell me what I'm watching. This is television, not radio. Also, they spent four days hyping an event that that we are already watching. Put down the pom-poms.

But their biggest failing was the constant guessing of where the balls will land while still in motion. This is simply unacceptable. Trying to sound like they are the smartest guys in the room and that they can think ahead of everybody else only makes them sound foolish. We don't need you to comment during after every shot. We did not tune in to listen to the announcers. Plus so much of their blabber was dumbed down to the point where you'd think they were talking to an audience that had never seen a pool match before. Don't they understand the only people watching this event are hard core pool fans and players? What they need to understand in their position is this - less is more.

The Skye Sports production was solid, with minimum crowd shots during the action. Unlike American productions that insist on constantly showing people in attendance watching what we're trying to watch, European television seems to understand this. But I would like to see a separate window in the dead space of the upper right hand corner constantly showing the overhead view of the table. Maybe next year.

I am sure they DON'T understand that, because it is wrong. Their main audience, and the one paying for the whole shooting match, is the general public watching Sky Sports, primarily in the UK, the vast majority of which are not "hard core pool fans and players". The appropriate comparison is when ESPN broadcasts pool, not Accu-Stats or other live streams, with the added complexity that most UK viewers who DO watch cue-sports are much more familiar with snooker.

That said, I agree that less is more, but this is a common problem in North American sports broadcasting. If you listen to tennis broadcasts by American TV and compare it to a British feed, the American's talk way more (same in golf). I much prefer the less talk format (although to digress completely love John McEnroe as a commentator). I think the snooker broadcasts generally do a much better job of striking the right balance between talk and just letting the viewers watch, but then again the British snooker audience is much more familiar with the game than they would be with pool (or than an American TV audience would be with professional pool).

I've watched some old BBC broadcasts of 1970's Wimbledon finals and they talked a lot less. During a game they would talk some facts, then during the switchovers they would open up about their opinions on the match. I like both styles; each in moderation.

The MC commentators seemed to be trying to balance between the Accu-Stats "He can use low-left and go two rails around..." model and the ESPN "Watch the cue-ball! Watch the cue-ball! Oh... never mind." model.
 
The British accents became tiresome. After a while all I could think is that I wanted the Orbit Gum interviewer girl to take her top off. I thought she had a great rack.

and I did miss Michela Tabb, she always made the event good. Those white gloves looked so much better on her
 
I'd be much happier if the sounds at the table, and the speaking between players was a separate sound choice from the commentary. I wasn't too thrilled with the commentary, but it's hard for me to watch pool without the added benefit of hearing the sounds of the table.

I have to take the good with the bad in this case and I was transitioning between no sound and sound.

That being said, John Schmidt said he would like to commentate on the matches. I always love hearing pro commentary on pro matches, and John is a character who will add both color and quality information to the pot. IMHO anyway.

Mosconi Cup Commentating

I thought the commentating from all commentators was first class. Jim Wych, Jerry Forsyth and Jay Helford keep it up! Great job. No ones perfect and there are always a few mistakes especially on live tv but these guys are experienced and have been around pool their whole lives so I doubt very much whether there is anybody better out there. Very entertaining Mosconi Cup. Big thankyou guys!

I thought the ref did a fine job. His "mistake" by calling the foul for "measuring" was completely understandable...it is a rule.

But he had the courage to quickly correct himself, and took the time to explain the situation in detail to both captains...who had no problem with how it was handled.

On the other hand when he tried to explain his error to Boyes, Karl turned into a child, pleading to the crowd, when he should have been listening to the ref.

By the way, I enjoyed this year's event more than any in a while. Very little complaining, no insults, no excuses. I like the US team...they showed more maturity than previous teams. IMO the match was closer than the final score

...and I really enjoy watching Skyler play. Very sound mechanically, great shot selection for someone his age, and his attitude was quite refreshing.
