Mosconi Cup 2011!!!!!

I was at the 2007 Mosconi cup in Las Vegas. Earl's antics were embarrassing to watch. And it wasn't just himself he embarrassed, it was the team and all of the US fans. After the match was done I went to get a cue ball signed by Earl and he started ranting "If they want me to ever play this event again, they better get me a better team to play with".
I am not sure how this attitude would make for a good team atmosphere.

As far as a venue for this event, it was surprising to me and disappointing that in 2007, on US soil, the Europeans still held 60 to 70% of the stands seats.

Please refresh my memory...who were the team members in '07?

no where is like York Hall in east London, never will the American version of the M-cup have a venue like that or the vibe that crowd has. Not even close those guys give us the 5-out and the pop in terms of venue and crowd support. Believe me I'm pulling for the American team and will be there doing what ever I can to ensure that we win, but our live audience just aint into it like they are there, the Brits drink us under the table too. they are cool and I respect them. I think their mannerism comes from football(soccer) and carries over into pool. Snooker in the UK is much like pool is here in America. The M-cup is wild in the UK. Were much more tame. BUT OUR BOYS WILL SHOOT THEIR NUTS OFF THIS YEAR!!!!! RALF, MIKA, BOYES, DARREN AND WHO EVER ELSE WATCH OUT WERE COMMING TO WIN-so grab your little weenies and take cover. :P

all in good sport and fun,

Fatboy
LOL! York Hall is crazy!! If I make the team I will try and get that crowd pumped! And I don't care who is on the team, we are all adult enough to put the BS aside for 4 Days to get the Cup for our Team, fans, country ETC.. GO USA

The 2007 Team was, Earl, JA, SVB, Corey, Rodney and I think Kim Davenport was the Captain.

I think Earls antics have been widely reported and he often goes completely over the top. As great a player as he is, arguably one of the greatest to ever pick up a cue, that doesn't excuse some of his behavior. A lot of European Fans were totally disapointed Earl wasn't playing in London last year, because they wanted to 'bait' him until he did something outrageous. If he's in the top 3 he will play but he's Earl and everyone knows what to expect and what we'll get. To expect anything else would be like having an Olypmpic Swimming Pool full of swimmers, releasing a Great White that hadn't been fed for months and expecting it not to bite anyone it's the nature of the beast :o

Hell yeah!

(Good to see that there are adults in competition for the MC spots.) :)

Thanks, Dennis!

Lots of us are pulling for the USA.

Denis you are probably the one player that could get some of the US crowd pumped up. We made a bit of noise at York Hall, but those Euro's were just in a different league. I would love next year for a few more US Fans at the York Hall, every US Pool Fan should try to get there at least once. It is an amazing experience and one that is truely unique. As for putting it aside you are of course right.

Damn, that sounds like a team that could win....Maybe replace Rodney with Dennis Hatch, and it sounds unbeatable.

It's pretty much certain it won't happen though. Dechaine should have his spot pretty much secured. So you have to figure SVB, Corey, Dechaine probably whether they secure the top 3 spots they now hold or not. If they hold those 3 spots the next 2 sure are tough. I'd agree with Dennis but the next spot is tough. Johnny has been pretty invisible and Earl is obviously a tough one to decide on.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing!! :). However, Mike is almost guaranteed a spot; so replace Rodney with Mike and that's a solid team. As much as I love the Hatchman, he seemed a bit shaky last year. Then again, we have no idea how Mike is going to perform under pressure; so maybe Hatch is the better bet.

I'm new to the forum, but I've been following the Mosconi cup for a while now and no other sporting event gets my juices flowing as much as this does... not even the freakin' Olympics :). And as much as I can't stand to see Earl disgrace himself, his team and his country, we just cannot afford not to have him on the team. Just his presence sends shivers down some of those European players' spines. Karl Boyes will pee in his pants if he comes up against Earl and that's the sheer "fear" that Strickland brings to the table.

Maybe we super-glue his mouth before each match?? :)

There was a blub I caught on TV recently, I think is was from (or about) on on the young'ns that was playing the recent golf tourney:
"Everything's bigger on the big stage"

Believable that there'd be nerves. Always love to see who steps up and takes it on gameday.

Not sure I agree with you about 'The Hatchetman' looking shaky, in my opinion he and Johnny were our best two of the competition. He missed one positional shot by a really small margin, IMHO our team would be the so much weaker without him. Johnny is the other must in my opinion his record in the Cup speaks for itself and his experience is invaluable, especially if one or two newcomers are on the team. I feel those comments are even more valid for the 2012 Cup, which I understand is almost certainly back at York Hall.

Superglue won't work, you ever tried suprgluing anything with that much hot air being blown out

It was said earlier here that Earl's record in the Cup is better than Johnny's...

Anybody know if that is true?

I think what he was probably referring to was that Dennis got self-hooked two times behind the 8 ball with only the 8 & 9 left on the table. He's a great player but I would agree that for a player of Dennis' level that's a bit shaky. But let's not forget he was the MVP only the year before.

Exactly!! To me, that was a game changer... a tournament changer. Gave them all the confidence in the world that even when the US in on the hill, we'll self-destruct and let them back in.

Btw, it's one thing for the fans to be biased and rowdy, but what's with those ass*$# commentators? They might as well have just sat in the crowd with the microphone and booed the Americans!!

I do want the American crowd to get more into it, even if it means getting rowdy. I'm definitely going this year to Vegas and I'll be leading the charge, even if it means getting thrown out :D

I believe Earls record was slightly better than Johnnys before December I imagine they are now about equal on number of wins, but not really sure.

I understand what you mean about being hooked but under the circumstances understandable. Anyone that hasn't been to York Hall is unaware of the extreme pressure players are under.
