Mosconi Cup 2021 Day 2 Updates

Reinhold misses this one with only 4 balls left to win the match:

I know rail shots increase the difficulty and likelihood of missing. I felt he was going to be close to hitting the 9 and was really focused on trying NOT to hit it, causing him to hit the 5 a little full.

Great event so far! The “extension banshees” were distracting at first but now pretty funny!!

He missed that five ball, but he did not dog it. There's a big difference between the two. Anyone can miss a shot but when you dog it that shows weakness. Chris will be all right and I don't think that missed shot will affect him going forward.

You are correct Jay, he didn’t dog it. The stroke looked solid and if they were 4-1/8”pockets, he would’ve made it. JJ left Chris pretty tough on the 2-ball, which led to Chris leaving JJ a less than ideal angle to get from the 3 to the 5 without leaving it on the rail.

You’ve got to hand it to the Euro team for taking care of business after that. The only real mistake I saw was when JJ scratched on the attempted safety on the 1 ball, when we were up 4-1. That scratch cost us two games just like Chris’s missed 5 ball cost us two games.

At the end of Day 1, the score was tied 2-2.
The USA supporters were pleased to be tied, and would have been absolutely thrilled
to end Day 2 in the lead 5-4.

Well, here we are! In the lead after Day 2!
Balls will be missed on tight pocket tables, it’s why we wanted them.
New cloth is tricky.

For me, I am genuinely enjoying this year’s Cup!
Go USA in Day 3!

JJ should have thinned the 1 on the opposite side and run the cueball safely back up table. That was a terrible shot and was the beginning of the end for this set.

That was a weird shot that JJ scratched on. It didn't look like there was any way to hit it that soft and scratch, but he did. He needed to hit the one ball even a little bit thinner it appears or listen to SBC.

That's the beauty of pool. You can play all your life and still see something new every once in a while. The way these sixteen round balls interact affords us infinite possibilities about the outcome.

Yes, it definitely picked up speed when it kissed off the second ball.

He was hooked and could not have thinned the 1-ball on the opposite side as you described. The best he could do was go rail first around two rails, which he did just fine, except for not hitting it quite hard enough.

Yes, very interesting. Kind of how a ball can actually gain speed after a double kiss shot. I want Bob Jewett to explain that one to us.
I'm not a physicist but I think it has something to do with the mass and density of a pool ball, and the energy it transfers to the second object ball, as opposed to simply rebounding off the rail. This shot was a little different in that the double kiss did not happen against a rail but in the open table. Buddy Hall once showed me a double kiss shot like that where he made an object ball come backwards toward the pocket, and I never quite understood how he did it.

Btw, let’s give some real props to Jeremy Jones for stepping up, getting in on a short day’s notice!
It takes Balls to jump right in and put yourself on full display worldwide like he has.
He had been spending a ton of hours as Captain, then found himself within hours as 1 of 5 players.

Thank you Jeremy!

At 4 to 1 after the break the cueball was wide open.

The 1 9 and 2 were down table in a cluster.

All he had to do was thin the 1 , leaving it there and run cueball 2 rails up table to long rail, short rail and under the 8

If he missed the cueball safe, the 1 is still tied up and he's got distance.

Rule #1 Don't Sell Out.
Even worse Don't Scratch.

He's got my vote!

It is a crazy phenomenon.
I think the base of the ball somehow loses traction with the bed cloth and slides to gain speed.

That safe would have left an easy kick...was a bad call anyways.
