MOSCONI CUP 2023 AZB Watch Party / Master Thread

Game 2

Ouschan breaks from near-center, and makes the 1 in the side. Has a good look at the 2. The 5 may be blocked by the 7, hard to tell. Makes a nice shot on the 2 and doesn't seem worried about the 5 - either it isn't blocked, or he likes the combo. Someone yelled from the cheap seats as he got down on the 4, but the ref quieted them down. He calls an extension, still don't know what he's trying. 5 was only partly blocked, he makes it clean and now has four more easy balls. And he's out.

Ouschan up 2-0

Game 3

Styer breaks dry but had some excitement as the 9 nearly dropped in the top corner. 1 ball is only available rail-first.

Ouschan misses the rail-first 1 ball heavy, but doesn't leave a good shot.

Styer plays a good safe behind the 8-9.

Ouschan barely gets his extension called in time before the beeps stop. He has a tight window between the 3 and 7. He makes it through and cuts the one, but leaves a look at it for a safe only.

Styer plays a good safe forcing a kick.

Ouschan plays the one-rail kick but leaves an easy shot on the 1. The layout looks straightforward.

Styer underruns his leave on the 2, now faces a tough shot squeezing in the corner past the 4, or an even tougher cut in the side. Instead he tries the long back-cut, undercuts it, and leaves an easy shot.

Ouschan takes over and should get out. Rattles the 4 four times in the corner but it drops, then he drops the rest of the balls.

Ouschan up 3-0

The difference in skill has never been more apparent at the Mosconi Cup. So lopsided. Europe is literally floating.

Even if Tyler manages to win this match 5-3, to get us to 2-6 overall, I can't see Europe being even a little worried. They can all show up hungover tomorrow and still win with their C game.

Game 4

Ouschan breaks, makes the 1 in the side, and leaves a decent look at the 2. 2 to the 3 will be tricky and key -- the rest of the table is easy. He decides to the play the 2-way cross-corner bank shot, makes it, and gets good on the 3. If he gets on the 4 he should be out, but it would require a lot of power and luck. He instead plays a nice safe which will force a jump or kick.

Styer brings out both cues and calls for an extension. Goes with the jump. Got unlucky and left the 3 easy.

Ouschan should be out from here. Played a nice force-follow in-and-out of the corner on the 7 to get downtable for the 8, then easily finishes the 8 and 9.

Ouschan up 4-0 and Styer needs a miracle.

Game 5

Styer breaks and scratches in the side with a nasty kiss off the 1, which also went in along with 3 other balls.

Ouschan takes BIH and should finish the remaining 5 balls in short order. Which he does.

Ouschan wins 5-0. Europe has tied the largest margin of 6 matches after day 2 at 7-1.

I feel like I'm reporting on a natural disaster... may not be able to keep this up tomorrow, too depressing.

Euro players and the entire euro billiards community enjoy victory more than Americans especially when they're beating Americans. They are very spirited winners. We've become very pleasant losers.
