Mosconi Cup Rankings and Schedule from Matchroom Sports

I was surprised Justin Bergman was not at the 4 bears event, as that would seem to be right up his alley. Did he have anything else going on? Seems a lot of people are pulling for him to make the Mosconi team, and there was a perfect chance to gather some points. This is not a bash, I just want our very best team there.

Looks like an exciting race for the spots. Good luck to all of the players.

As a result of the Tornado 10-Ball event, we have some changes in the Mosconi Cup points rankings. What is shown here assumes the points for the Tornado event are not reduced as the result of a smaller-than-expected field size (80 players instead of 128). And, these numbers are subject to confirmation (or correction) once Matchroom Sport posts the official standings.

The players' rankings prior to the Tornado event are shown in parentheses.

1 (1) Van Boening, Shane.....325
2 (2) Woodward, Skyler.....220
3 (3) Morris, Rodney.....206 201
4 (5) Dechaine, Mike.....195
5 (4) Dominguez, Oscar.....190
6 (6) Wilkie, Shaun.....145
7 (8) Bergman, Justin.....143
8 (7) McMinn, Shane.....124 119
9 (14) Roberts, Josh.....110
10 (9) Shuff, Brandon.....107

24 of the 28 points events have now been played. The 4 remaining events are: Chinook 7' 10-Ball, Gotham City 9' 9-Ball, US Open 9' 9-Ball, and Kuwait 9' 9-Ball.

Edit 10/7 -- The Matchroom list is out now, updated for the Tornado event.. They awarded points to only the top 24 players at the Tornado event rather than the top 32. So Morris and McMinn do not get the 5 points I gave them for 25th/32nd. The corrected totals are shown in red above; the ranking order is unchanged from what I had.

The amount of added money could also affect the points given.

I vote Josh Roberts for wild card.

I think after last year, Bergman is an automatic captain's pick. I would like the other to go to Oscar or Josh Roberts.

The Mosconi Cup Team USA Facebook page posted this yesterday:

Team USA will have a BIG announcement Tuesday @6pm! If you love pool you will love this!

Has SVB clinched a spot already? Or is it something else, like some kind of event that the team will take part in?

I would love to see Josh get a captains pick. Also stop giving out points for 8ball and 7 ft tables. At least 7 ft tables, everyone looks like a champ unless they are dbl shimmed+

... Has SVB clinched a spot already? ...

Technically, no. If Shane earns zero points in the remaining 4 events, he will end up at his current total of 325. That means 3 players would need at least 326 points each to knock Shane out of one of the automatic spots (top 3). Those remaining 4 events do offer enough points for that to be possible.

But the likelihood of Shane not ending up in the top 3 may be near zero.

[Edit -- and do we know whether any of the top guys are even going to Kuwait?]

Team USA points leader board

Looks like it's going to be a battle to very end to see who gets 2nd and 3rd in points and gets the automatic bids to make the Team USA.

I am very curious to see if Mark Wilson does the same thing as last year and uses his captains picks on 4th and 5th top points leaders or skips some of the players and picks one of his favorites.

The remaining events are:

Chinook Winds Open 10 Ball ........-- October 7-9 --- Level 3, Grade 2 (28)
Gotham City Billiards Pro 9 Ball ..-- October 8-10 --- Level 2, Grade 3 (30)
US Open 9 Ball Norfolk, Virginia ..-- October 16-22 --- Level 1 (80)
WPA Kuwait 9 Ball Open Kuwait ..-- Oct 24 - Nov 5 --- Level 1 (80)

Listed in parens are the points available for 1st place in each.

Most exciting race for the Mosconi Cup spots we've ever had for sure. I think it will all be on the line at the US Open, which is just nine days away.

A year ago, Mark Wilson went with the top five in the Mosconi rankings. Might be a good idea to do the same in 2016. About ten guys still in with a chance.

It's a pool fan's delight.

Morris and McMinn finished 25th/32nd in the Tornado event. That was worth 5 points on the original points schedule for this event. However, because of the field size of 80 instead of 128, Matchroom decided not to award any points for 25th/32nd. You never know -- small differences like that could be of significance at the end.

At Chinook Winds, Woodward was first (28 points) and Morris was 5th/6th (15 points). At Gotham City, Dechaine was 4th (20 points) and Wilkie was 17th/24th (0 or 5 points, depending where Matchroom cuts off the points). So the rank order of the top 10 guys did not change, but Dechaine is now just one point behind Morris in the race for top 3.

1 Van Boening, Shane.....325
2 Woodward, Skyler.....248
3 Morris, Rodney.....216
4 Dechaine, Mike.....215
5 Dominguez, Oscar.....190
6 Wilkie, Shaun.....145 or 150
7 Bergman, Justin.....143
8 McMinn, Shane.....119
9 Roberts, Josh.....110
10 Shuff, Brandon.....107

As always, these early results are subject to confirmation (or correction) once Matchroom Sport posts the official standings.

26 of the 28 points events have now been played. The remaining two events -- US Open 9-Ball and Kuwait 9-Ball -- both offer Level 1 points (80 for 1st, 67 for 2nd), so it's quite possible that we will still see some changes.

Does anyone know whether any of these players (or any other players from USA) are planning to go to Kuwait?

Mike Dechaine recently stated on his Instagram that he's attending the Kuwait 9 ball.
