Mosconi Cup - Strickland

If Earl was a baseball or hockey player you would all have been applauding him. And the benches would have all been behind Earl. Right with him. Says a lot about Earl's team mates.

Besides, Earl is the Mosconi Cup.

Think it would still be going strong if he wasn't in it?

I couldn't help but notice this is the only thread in the entire forum about the Mosconi Cup and it isn't even about the event it's about Earl. I certainly hope the entire event isn't overshadowed by Earl's actions on day one.

Earl is awesome!

Don't let 'em give you any crap Earl!

It is the look of a spirit that can soar.

in the eyes of the Bonaparte.
It is the birthright of eagles.

And Earl.

Great reply! I get your point. Truth is, while I say I wouldn't quit my day job, I suffer the same pool affliction many in this forum do. Many times I've thought I could be doing something else with my time, but it's just not possible.

As far as Earl, I just wish his personality would come out in a bit of a different way. I think you understand what I mean.

All you people who say Earl "hurts" the sport are clueless.

We live in a world where Jerry Springer gets huge ratings. People listen to Howard Stern on the radio. People want to see fights and betrayal on Survivor. News clips of a car race show the crashes. Dennis Rodman, John Mcenroe, Mike Tyson, and other people MAKE their sports due to their antics, not only their skill.

This is the world where hype and controversy and conflict reign supreme. This is the world where snooker is dying because it has little to no color but from Ronnie O'Sullivan. Gone are the days of a guy like Alex Higgins making the sport interesting.

You may not like Earl's antics. I will be the first to agree that he is a total psycho and acts like an ass most of the time. But to say he hurts the sport or will cause people to tune out? Get a clue people, Earl is the type of thing that people will tune into the sport for. The over the top people are the thing audiences now look for.

If Ronnie O'Sullivan said Americans were a bunch of boring wankers he would not be banned from playing in the USA. More then likely Kevin Truedoe would offer him a winner take all match against Earl for $200,000 and it would be the most profitable highest ranked pool to ever hit TV.

In every sport you have an outcast, whats the problem with it? Does it hurt the sport or is it helping the sport.

To have a good answer on this you should look at the past:

John McEnroe was a legend and still playes in the Alex classics. We all know him for his rude behavier, but it added something extra to the sport and people went to the stadium for it.

Paul Gascoigne was a soccer player for England and alway's made comments on the fiels and against the press, he was / is crazy, but people went to the stadium for it.

Dennis Rodman was on of the best players of the Chicago Bulls and was with his extravaganze on every magazine in the US. Not a day without him and the sport was metioned in the papers.

SO, like him or not but don't claim it is not good for the sport!

Oh man do I agree, I started a whole thread about this and I hate it when people want a bunch of penguins being real quiet with everything all prim and proper and perfect.

Sure, I don't want it to be a madhouse, we need rules, but let the players be themselves, Earl is sooooooo good for our sport, love him or hate him, he makes us talk. People don't talk about how nice a guy was dressed or how well behaved a player is, we talk about the nut that screamed at the ref or tore off their jersey, has strange pre shot routines or superstitions, even in poker character is key!

Johnny Mack is one of the reasons tennis became so popular and players got to feel like rock stars, many tennis insiders (not the purest) talk about how tennis needs another Connors or McEnroe. I tend to feel Connors was the catalyst, Johnny just took it to another level, he was like a crash in nascar, you hated it but couldn't help but want to see it.

We need Earl, We could use another Fats while we are at it.

What I would have paid to see Fats play Earl... oh man:eek: I'm afraid Earl would have lost his mind!:D

I went to see a tournament with a friend who is not pool fan, he had fun and all he could talk about was Basavich and Archer, those are the names he remembered, not the winner, not the best player.

i believe earl strickland was born and raised a true red neck. his roots stem from his red neck grand daddy in good ole north carolina. he can't help himself. i apologize to the entire british population, in fact knowing earl, in two days , he will say in an interview, "i was wrong, i love the british, and sometimes my emotions get out of control" he is a jazzed up red neck, who gets out of control and then apologizes the next day. at least he "KNOWS" he's crazy which is the first step. i steer clear of him, because he is possessed. as far as good tv??? is it "good" or is it high ratings? there is a BIG difference. good tv is public television educating people. good ratings is showing the planes flying into the trade centers over and over and over and over again, you get it? so the next time, you say it's good television ~think, is it good television? or good ratings? i personally think it's good ratings, and not good television.

YOu can't honestly think that Earl was unprovoked- no matter how minor it may have been, I guarantee that it was reaction. Who polices the audience? Do you think that whatever turned him was an accident, or intended to cause a reaction?

I did state that I could understand he was upset about the final decision on the shot clock regarding Chamat, however, he is known to blow....so I am sure someone had to poke fun. The point of my initial post is that he is supposed to be a professional - act like one....suck it up, and move forward. If he played on a tour, he may have had consequences for his actions instead of look at the funny jackass run his mouth.

So what Earl did is not good TV, and only for ratings and I'll agree with you, it's for ratings, and you say educational programming is good TV, I will also agree with you thats good for TV, I love the discovery channel and PBS.

So you talk about whats good for pool and TV and say Earls behavior is bad, and then you go and do something very similar and call Earl a Red Neck and Crazy?

Do you think it's good to be calling Earl a Red Neck? Aren't you doing exactly what you disapprove of? or is this just for ratings:D

I find it interesting to see people acting no different than the exact same thing they call Earl out for.

does anybody else find it ironic that what caused earl to make an outburst like that was the shot clock, which ultimately was implemented to increase television ratings? the shot clock will more than likely have a greater effect than whoever governs the mosconi cup could have imagined because of this incident.

If you ever get a chance, watch a session of the "House of Commons" from London. That is how the english politicians treat their Prime Minister. These politicians are supposed to be amongst the most "respected" of people. If our President was subjected to that by our congress, I think he would run straight past Crawford, TX and into Mexico. Now, lower the bar to a group of Las Vegas partying, beer drinking, english railbirds. You can imagine what Earl was hearing (Ever seen a soccer match??) I am willing to bet that Earls "you suck....." comment was in RESPONSE to more and much worse being said to him.

Hi Fleece
You make sense.

Hi Bernie,
You attained pro status on being allowed to play in IPT.Let me remind u that Just like United States Senators do not criticise each other in public, pro pool players DO NOT criticise each other in the media or public forms.I hope this will help u to learn to be a Pro pool player.

How about apologizing to me, Mike Templeton, 1proscoe, cuechick, Johnny Archer, Charlie Bryant, Scottr, voodoodaddy, BJ Ussery, Stevie Moore, Jeremy Jones, Gabe Owen, and anyone else that I can possibly think of in the pool world (or outside for that matter) that are from the south that you just offended! My roots stem from my "red neck grand daddy" in South Carolina. So what?? Just because someone is from the south they're a redneck? I think you just proved that people from the north can be every bit as redneck as anyone in the south., in fact knowing earl, in two days , he will say in an interview, "i was wrong, i love the british, and sometimes my emotions get out of control" he is a jazzed up red neck, who gets out of control and then apologizes the next day. at least he "KNOWS" he's crazy which is the first step.Do you know that you act like a "redneck"? All I can say is that I sincerely hope that you're trying to prove a point about good ratings or high ratings with your racist remarks. I thought I understood someone to say you're in the IPT.... or were you just down in redneck land to watch the tourney? If you are on the tour.... Deno, great guy here... real good represenative.

How much money do you think it would take to get Congress to do that? I'll take up a collection!

Pool & Nascar

That fight in turn 3 on the final lap caused millions of people to become fans, and when someone mentions NASCAR, that's the first thing I think about.

I agree with Hickock. I want to see good pool. But I want to be entertained as well.

Mike

I was just a wee lad of 22 and stationed in Norfolk VA. at that time and was Nascar when Nascar wasn't cool , that bit of entertainment made the evening news across the USA and made front page in the papers as well as being the talk of the town and established Nascar as an American pasttime along with Baseball ,Hot Dogs ,Apple Pie and Chevrolet . No matter what people thought about it, it got the people to talk about it ...and that was a gooood thing !

Just let one of those limeys run their mouth and throw a punch at Earl or any one else for that matter and Pool will be the talk of the town for its 15 minutes of fame .In that time pool will ride the sports entertainment roller coaster ,millions of fans and enemies will be made in an instant ,sponsors will come and go and life will be good.....Its what happens after the smoke has cleared that will tell the tale , and look at Nascar today ??

I am in no way advocating such actions but I will set on the sidelines munching on my "freedom" fries and post on the newsgroups and say to any one who will listen to an old man "I was there when"........

Ratchet - believes any boost in interest in the sport be it good or bad is still a boost isnt it ?? and that in a nutshell is what we need today IMO

So Earl's antics "help" the sport, eh? Well, let's see, he's been throwing tantrums for 20+ years now. How's that working out for the sport of pool so far?
