Mosconi Cup - Strickland

One More Thing...

Before we all burn 8-Ball Bernie in effagy, I believe his "redneck" comments were meant to be tongue-in-cheek.

And yes, I am one of those rednecks born and raised in the South, so I feel qualified to comment.

P.S. I never accepted Appamattox. :p

Lot's of people like to watch auto racing because of the chance of seeing a dramatic crash, people watched Dennis Rodman because there was always the possibility of him doing something crazy, there are people that watch ice hockey because they like the fighting, and so on. The fact is, people are attracted to dramatic and unpredictable events in sports, and it is those events that boost ratings or sell tickets. However, when it comes from the point of view of a true lover of the sport itself, I have to agree that Earl can be an embarrasment to the rest of the pool playing world. Janet Jacksons t*ts on national tv probably did wonders for the ratings, but the sponsors in that situations all pulled out from underneath. I personally think that Janet is worth watching, and would definately increase ratings if she were to appear in future television spots, but even though they could get better ratings, I would bet that most sponsors wouldn't touch her with a stick.
I think Earl is the same way. Sure he's fun to watch, and I bet many non-viewers become viewers as a result of him, thus higher ratings, but in the long run, that's the kind of crap that scares sponsors away.

I couldn't help but notice this is the only thread in the entire forum about the Mosconi Cup and it isn't even about the event it's about Earl. I certainly hope the entire event isn't overshadowed by Earl's actions on day one.
Well I guess that says alot about pool if this is the only thing going on at the cup! In other words,if earl wasnt stirring up the place nobody would give a crap.! Yes,he should have just ignored the crowd, but unlike other sports, the crowd can be 5 feet away and there aint no crowd control at these things that I can ever see.The derby,9 ball open, valley forge, none of them have anybody right there like a usher or attendant to keep things straight. So if some limmy bastard in vegas got in Earl's face, they got what they deserved!

Let's pray for Bernie vs. Earl in the next IPT deal! Don't know if it'll be good TV, but it'll be great entertainment.

And p.s. Bernie ... take it from a one-time partially assimilated New Yorker in Tennessee, that old line about zipping it on the subjects of religion and politics still holds down that way! But if Kevin's cameras are rolling, it might could be a kick if you had a chat with Earl about the War of Northern Aggression before your match.

It is an old cliche, but there is no "I" in the word team. This is not about personal gain, it is about what is right for the TEAM. If this is not his main concern, he is not deserving until he, as the rest of the team already has, figures this out.

Sounds like he is getting the team part a bit now.

Strickland continued, “I have to maintain my composure so I don’t disrupt my team mates, because Rodney started playing poorly yesterday because of all that stuff with the crowd.

“There never going to see another guy like me though. We can’t be happy until we’ve won the event and if we don’t keep up a high standard of play we'll lose.”

I don't recall a certain pro telling me he was a TOP professional or even a professional when asking me to play $20 sets in Vegas a few years ago. Maybe he just assumed that most pool players know who he is, but I doubt it. He hadn't won a ring game on ESPN back then.

LOL...do you expect someone to say "Hi, I am (name), a top professional, lets play for $20"? If he went around announcing who he is before asking to play CHEAP sets, you would probably call him an egomaniac.

That is refreshing to hear. He has thought about it, he is accountable, and the team grows stronger.

As stated in my post, I hope it was tongue in cheek. However, most people on here do not know Bernie. If Bernie or anyone else for that matter is going to say something like that, it needs to be followed up at the end of the post with a statement saying as such. Otherwise, we're left to believe this is the way he thinks & feels.... there are people out there that think like this so unless someone knows Bernie well or Bernie adds a disclaimer to such a post, we cannot know his true intentions.

I'm confused. REDNECK is a racist comment? I think it is a code word for you RACIALISTS to pounce on when you see or hear the word. When ANY of you can put EARL in his place at the table, that is when to tell him how YOU think HE should act.

I'm not telling Earl how he should act. I'm telling Bernie that he shouldn't characterize someone a redneck just because they're from the south. When someone says what Bernie said and they mean it.... yes, that's racism. When someone posts a redneck joke, that's a joke. Anyone with common sense can tell the difference. But when someone uses it as a derrogatory statement to classify people simply because of where they were born... yes, in my book that's racism. As far as Earl goes... I don't care what he says or does... the guy is a bonafide whack job. Love him or hate him, ratings or no ratings... that's my personal opinion of Earl from what I've personally witnessed from him.

Screw Earl. I never ever heard John McEnroe make a racist comment about his opponent or the fans like Earl does constantly. Earl is just a crybaby, pure and simple. I don't want him to be docile, I want him to be civil.

Earl's antics

Seems Barry Hearn LOVES the drama.

I was in the media room w/Earl yesterday when Barry was talking with Earl. Barry said 'it's just like a soap opera'. You got to have a 'good guy' and a 'bad guy' in any good story.

He really calmed down yesterday, with not one outburst. I was expecting fireworks after day 1, but it didn't happen.

Earl and Rodney have won 8 straight doubles matches together.

Earl has been a 'wild card' selection to the M. Cup for the last 5 yrs. Bypassing the points list. I wonder why......??

Earl SELLS.....Love him, or hate him.

Go U.S.A.!!!!!!!!!!

Inspite I am big on freedom of speech,I was really offended by Bernie`s comments.I felt that he meant it and I did NOT think it was tongue and cheek.Freedom of speech doesn`t mean making insulting/abusive/prejudicial comments directed at a specific person.

I know that Bernie has been on here and posted since all of this took place. Had I said something as a joke that was taken the wrong way, the first thing I would've done was apologize and clear things up right away. The fact that he completely ignored this thread and hasn't responded... speaks volume to me about his intent in that post. I guess I was wrong in my hopes that he was joking or just trying to make a point. Bernie, I can be a really nice person and I can also be alot of fun to hang out with. I like to laugh and have a good time. There are tons of people like myself that are from the south that you've closed yourself off to due to your ignorant, close minded views. Your loss, not ours.

Hi Timberly
Before u first posted expressing your concern about Bernie`s comments,I made two posts expressing my concerns. In one of the posts I mentioned that Just like the United States Senators, the Pro pool players do not criticise each other in the media or other public places.Since he now has pro status,he has to learn how to behave like a pro player towards fellow pro players.
