2011 US Mosconi Cup Rankings Latest

Top Five set for Vegas Show-down

WITH The 2011 partyPoker.net Mosconi Cup set to kick off at 11am on Thursday 8th December, the team selected to represent America at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be Shane Van Boening, Shawn Putnam, Mike Dechaine, Johnny Archer and Rodney Morris.

These five have finished at the top of Matchroom Sport ranking system that comprised ten events across the USA over a 12 month period. With a total of 26 appearances in the transatlantic tussle between them, there is plenty of experience on hand, with Mike Dechaine being the sole debutant.

Following a career best finish at the weekend$B!G(Bs US Open in Chesapeake, Shawn Putnam, who was a member of the winning side in 2005, crashed the top three to guarantee an automatic spot. He ultimately displaced Johnny Archer, but the Scorpion and Rodney Morris garnered sufficiently high finishes at the Open to maintain their top five positions and hold off Dennis Hatch, who narrowly missed out.

With the top three in the ranking assured their spots, Matchroom Sport decided to go with the top five after an epic year-long battle among the top players in the USA, and named Morris and Archer as the wild cards. The team will now attempt to win back pool most prestigious team trophy after defeat in London last December.

The US Mosconi Cup Ranking consisted of 10 events throughout the United States, and culminated in the US Open. Points were allocated as per the BCA Points List and each event was weighted depending on total purse, size of field and number of top-ranked players competing.

Only players finishing in the last 32 of each event were allocated points and players were allowed to drop their worst finish of the ten event series. At the conclusion, after the 2011 US Open, the top three players were automatically granted entry to the Mosconi Cup side.

The Final Ranking

1. Shane Van Boening 673
2. Shawn Putnam 591.5
3. Mike Dechaine 541.5
4. Johnny Archer 520.5
5. Rodney Morris 479.5

So Hatch didn't make it??? They announced that he did at the finals last night and he seemed genuinely thrilled.

Too bad.

Putnam and Dechaine will really have to bring it. The other guys are battle tested at the MC before. Dechaine is a very good player and Putnam shoots well too. I think the team would be better with Earl, Hatch, Deuel, or Williams over Putnam though

I heard that there was rumor floating around the Open that Putnam wasn't going to get the spot but it was just a rumor and I don't know that anyone knew for sure who team USA was going to be for sure. Making an announcement like that without absolute confirmation was in bad taste and unfair to Hatch and all of the MC hopefuls.

Just out of curiosity, who made the announcement?

Putnam has been on the MC team before and he finished higher at one of the toughest tournaments to win than any of the players that you mentioned.

With that team I think I will have to route for Europe. Nicer guys and very professional.

Hatch would be a better selection than Putnam or Dechaine. He was the heart and soul in Vegas the last time.

It isn't that I disagree with you, I don't even care very much for Archer or Putnam but ultimately Putnam made the team with his playing ability and Hatch did not, nor did any of the other players that were mentioned.

Matchroom has decided to use the player rankings to field the teams and like it or not, none of the other guys placed high enough to make the team.

If I was able to hand pick the team, the only player on this years roster that I would keep is SVB. My choices would be biased and personal which really isn't the best way to field a team. I think Matchroom does it the right way and if a player wants to be on the team (whether we like it or not) then they have to earn their spot. While I would prefer other players make the team, I will say congrats and good luck to those that made the team.

Fingers are crossed for America, but if Shane and Johnny don't do all the shooting, it's gonna be a massacre. Good luck boys!

The team, of course, begins with Shane. After that, howerver, the choice I'm most pleased about is Dechaine, the only other twenty-something on the team. Shawn Putnam, as the top American finisher at the US Open, definitely belongs. But .......

if American pool is ever going to rebound from its reduced status on the world pool map, noted accurately numerous times by Jimmy Wych during his US Open commentary, it will have to be delivered by its young players. In the just completed US Open, Shane Van Boening and Mich Ellerman were, I believe, the only American twenty-somethings that finished in the Top 32. Of course, twenty-something Jason Klatt, despite a 33rd place finish, also did himself proud.

If I'd been allowed to choose the team, I'd have left out Archer and Morris, and added Mitch Ellerman and Jason Klatt.

Can't argue with the choices made, but I feel it's time to groom the next generation of American pool. Why wait?

I wonder who is going to be chosen to take Archer's place since he obviously will not play now that it is for sure Dechaine is on the team.;)

Jason Klatt cant play on the Mosconi team since he is from Canada. And as far as you saying Mitch Ellerman should have made it is a bit of a stretch. I would take Hatch, Earl, Corey and even Shuff over Ellerman. I dont have a good feeling about team USA this year. Dechaine is coming off a piss poor showing at the open and hasnt been playing very well lately. Im wondering how he is going to handle the pressure especially with the short races. Hopefully Putnam and Dechaine play their asses off.

I thought Klatt was not an American but a Canadian.. Am I mistaken or are Canadians allowed to play for team USA??

He's married to an American. I wonder, if he gets dual citizenship, would that make him eligible to play for the US Mosconi team?

Jay announced it a couple different times they would be team mates, thats at minimum a 10k mistake. Dennis has to be pissed.

Theres always next year for Charlie Williams and Earl...we get them back in it, we can win.

Thanks for the correction. I just like the idea of giving the young ones a shot, Shuff, Sossei, Ellerman, Engel and many others are all OK in my books.
